Eiffel Tower needs $22M ‘aesthetic perimeter’ to protect against terrorism threat
Officials in France are spending roughly $22 million to protect the Eiffel Tower from terrorist threats.
Tourists have marveled at the Eiffel Tower since the late 1800s, but a slew of deadly terror attacks in France in recent years have prompted officials to better guard the landmark.
Deputy Mayor Jean-François Martins on Thursday gave reporters in Paris a better idea of the planned structure, which will replace metal barriers erected in 2015.
“Sadly, the risk of terrorism hasn’t gone away,” Mr. Martins said, Bloomberg reported. “It’s not a wall, it’s an aesthetic perimeter.”

The Paris mayor's office says the wall will replace metal fences put up for the Euro 2016 football tournament.
The project, if approved, is expected to cost about €20m (£17m; $21m) and work should start later this year.
The French capital has been on high alert since attacks by jihadists in November 2015 left 130 people dead.
Last July, 86 people were killed when a lorry ploughed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the southern city of Nice.
The Eiffel Tower, one of France's most famous landmarks, attracts more than six million visitors each year and the wall is designed to stop individuals or vehicles storming the site, said the assistant mayor for tourism, Jean-Francois Martins.
"The terror threat remains high in Paris and the most vulnerable sites, led by the Eiffel Tower, must be the object of special security measures," he said.
"We will replace the metal grids to the north and south with glass panels which will allow Parisians and visitors a very pleasant view of the monument."
Mr Martins added: "We have three aims - to improve the look, make access easier and strengthen the protection of visitors and staff."
The project will also involve reorganising pathways around the tower.
I see no issues with this.
They already have a metal barrier. Replacing it with glass panels certainly would give it a much better look while protecting a national monument.
Build the aesthetic wall
Yeah considering Paris actually gets terrorist attacks, whatever. The Eiffel tower is even cooler than you think it is, if you've never been there.
Seems like a waste of money to me and I think even if it's "aesthetic" it will damage the tourism value of the tower.
All they need are bollards capable of stopping a car/truck bomb from approaching the tower.

You don't need to break a bollard to create fear. The fact that someone may even GET CLOSE ENOUGH that it would be a issue would be create absolute panic in the streets.
I cycled to Paris last year around the time of the euros and it just looked cancerous on the ground, boards and fences around and couldn't go on the grass. Its just a fuckin tower let them have it
They saw too much Team America.

if trump branded his wall was an "aesthetic perimeter" itd be much more popular
The Eiffel Tower is a remarkably well-engineered building. It would take a surprising amount of force to make a dent. That's turn-of-the-century steel.
Still, a glass wall is better than the fence. It photographs better, at least.

i second that
It's a shame there's people in this world that just want to steal, kill, and destroy until they're killed for it, because their warped little minds tell them God is commanding them to wreak havoc.
What is with the world and building walls all of a sudden. Why can't we ever build something nice, like museums, or art exhibits, or torture chambers?

No one care about that stuff, it's all about the aesthetic
France would rebuild the Eiffel Tower even if it was destroyed.

or Sol zéro.

It's fair more practical to dedicate the new structure to those who died while keeping the original structure intact and unaltered.
This won't stop Hitler!

Which is weird, because all the Parisians I've spoken to hate the thing. It's kind of been a massive eyesore since the expo, but the tourists like it, so they kept it around.
IMHO, it doesn't actually NEED the extra protection. The powers that be just SAY it needs to be protected as a reason to blow money.

So long as you believe the boogyman Islamists are out to get you you will never stop saying the threat exists. Even after the threat of islamists passes you'll find some new reason to justify unnecessary security.

While They are Far in the minority, they are not boogyman, Salafism is the movement in which They want the world to revert to 7th Century Islamic Fundamentalism. These are the guys which a lot of anti-muslims views have been painted on them,
They want a glass wall to stop vehicles?

For £22M it's probably not your average glass.

Glass can do a lot of things, but it's still just glass, or occasionally glass with some plastic in it. Hit it the right way and it'll shatter, no matter how strong it is.

It's still going to require a bit more than a truck packed with explosives to bring down the Eiffel tower. Even if they did pack a truck that large with enough explosives it would be stopped long before it even reached the gardens.
You are better off flying an aircraft into it.
This isn't to stop the tower actually being taken down, its more to minimise the impact on the crowds at the bottom if someone goes boom.

The threat of the Islamic 'boogeyman'' is completely real though considering 200+ people have died in mass attacks in the past few years.
I read yesterday that Denmark had spent 150m DKK on having police guard potential terror targets only for 1.5 years. It's waste of money in my opinion, could've been spent to solve crime, educate more police, or used on something else entirely.

You obviously haven't seen anything but ordinary window glass, have you?
