At the conclusion of the Commons' first opportunity to debate the The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, MPs voted by 400 to 175, a majority of 225, in favour of the legislation. Prime Minister David Cameron has described the move as "an important step forward" that strengthens society.
I never watch this commons stuff, but I've actually watched some of this.
Depends on how the House of Lords react though, I haven't heard much from them - but they could delay the legislation unless it has similar support there too.
It was expected to pass, it's just an embarrassment for the Tories as a lot of them were against it
About fucking time but I still think politics shouldn't hold a place in who can and can't get married, nor should religion but we don't live in that perfect world where everyone shares the same views. Now we wait for the House of Bigots to delay it weeks on end.
Do they really vote with "Aye" and "No"?
Do they really vote with "Aye" and "No"?
Yes.
Do they really vote with "Aye" and "No"?
Its kind of tradition, lots of political voting is done that way.
Do they really vote with "Aye" and "No"?
Aye
that looks like a long process for legislation? how long does it usually take to get through the different houses?
They vote with Ayes and Ears and Mouth and Noes
Also for people wondering which MPs voted which way, this should be updated soon.
If there are all these processes, how come some bills like the ones Michael Gove's done on education have passed through so quickly? Do they just rush them through and say "VOTE FOR THIS AND RECEIVE COOKIES" or something?
that looks like a long process for legislation? how long does it usually take to get through the different houses?
It can depend, things can be stalled or they can go extremely fast. For example the digital economy bill/act went through the final steps (report / third reading IIRC) in a number of days. Things like this will get dragged out because a lot of MPs feel so strongly about it. To the point where a lot will ignore what their party tells them to do when it comes to voting.
Apparently a slim majority of Tories voted against it, about 140 of them. That also means that only about 30 non-Conservative MPs voted against it
444 majority. Ohohohoho
Uh ok, the Coalition for (straight-only) Marriage has hailed the result as some sort of victory. Even more bizarrely, in the same breath they have implicitly admitted the bill will pass the Commons
The scale of the opposition against the Government’s profoundly undemocratic plans is astonishing, and sends a clear message to the Prime Minister that he faces a lengthy and damaging battle to redefine marriage. There are more votes in the Commons, more speeches, potentially dozens of amendments and then the bill will go to the Lords
what have they done
Do they really vote with "Aye" and "No"?
Yay
what have they done
approved a gay marriage law at its second reading
Considering the house of lords are pent up wankers like Thatcher with as much grasp on society as a hermit in nigeria I have my doubts. I would be very happy for this to be law here though.
There will be a lot of shit if it doesn't get through the house of lords though.
All the House of Lords can do is propose amendments, they can't stop the bill as a whole. Which is going to piss off the Lords Spiritual no end :v: [editline]5th February 2013[/editline] Also the reactions of some people on the 'Coalition for Marriage' Facebook page are hilarious, including comparisons between gay marriage and 1984, and this gem:
There will be a lot of shit if it doesn't get through the house of lords though.
The Lords haven't been able to stop legislation getting through for over 100 years. The most they can do now is delay it for about 2 or 3 years.
now let's hope NI and Scotland follow suit, particularly the former.

woo
Surprised this passed considering the incredibly slick, attention-grabbing and expensive-looking videos the Coalition for Marriage has been putting out
Welcome to the downfall of humanity, UK. That's just what we call it, it's actually great progress.
