Girls write more complex programs and learn more about coding than boys when it comes to making computer games, a study has found.
A group of 12 - 13-year old pupils spent eight weeks developing their own 3D role playing games as part of the University of Sussex study.
Dr Kate Howland and Dr Judith Good developed Flip, a programming language which uses a simple interface to help the pupils string together scripts, basic programs which trigger a change within the game, such as a message popping up once a treasure chest is opened.
The girls used seven triggers within the games, almost twice as many as the boys of the group, and were much more successful at creating complex scripts with two or more parts and conditional clauses.
Boys had a tendency to build their triggers around when a character said something, the most first and most simple trigger the class learned.

Because your gender obviously affects how well you can code and isn't dependent on the person at all.
Found this on /g/:

Eh.
Of course, that's why the game industry is chock full of female developers
why do i have the feeling this thread is going to explode
at that sort of basic level I wouldn't call it 'programming'
I also wouldn't say complexity is an indicator of quality

probably an old version (from 2011) but this is what the interface looks like
it's just one of those drag n drop things like gamemaker. It's not really real coding, just the concept of it.

Pragmatism.
sounds like a conclusive study
I don't think you can make a claim like that after studying a handful of 12-13 year olds.
I am a bit confused by their definition of good or how exactly they tested this.
“In other words, if girls’ stories are typically more complex and well developed, then when creating stories in games, their stories will also require more sophisticated programs in order for their games to work.”
Apparently programming a story is the hardest thing in game programming?
lol
the only thing this study proves is that girls on average care more about school projects than boys do.
we already knew this.
Why should gender matter?
Surely your interest in programming should be more important than what chromosomes you have.
But how fun are they?
One study in one class of 12-13 year olds isn't conclusive.
It says literally nothing about how big the group was, what if it was like 12 kids or something?

I think this is the best analysis of the subject we're going to get in this thread and everything after this is likely going to be really heated and not go anywhere.
This just in~ Women think they're better then men!
Can we stop with this already?
They need to do more studies in a greater age range.
Try adults with similar education of both genders in game programming.

I'm assuming they're better because they made things more complex?
We keep dividing, we need to recognize people as individuals, instead of by gender. If we did this, we'd recognize that an individual is smarter than everyone else than a group is smarter than another one.
A new study finds that previous studies suggest theories rather than flat out say their findings are absolute truth
Perhaps people are forgetting we are in a "sensationalist" news section?

The 'Sensationalist' isn't meant to be as literal as a lot of people make it out to be.

You can still make statistically significant findings with a small group, like that's a basic stats concept
why do i have the feeling this thread is going to explode
There's nothing to explode over. At that age, women tend to be better at math and state tracking/changing than men, this isn't even a thing as far as I'm concerned, this has been known for decades.
If they're better at math and language at this point, well no shit they'd be better at programming or pseudo-programming.
Quelle duh.
idk you guys after playing depression quest i had to step back from the computer for a while and just think about how much of a great game i was playing
Its pretty funny seeing all these "boy vs girl" research thats popping out now.
I will always believe that average capabilities of a group are one thing, but in the end, the only thing that matters is the capabilities of the individual itself.
I imagine your average 12 year old boy doesn't particularly give much of a shit about putting effort into class, they didn't when I was young
But how fun are they?
Fun is just a buzzword when you can't actually think of any real reasons as to why the game is good, don't use it.
shitty tabloid makes sensationalist conclusion from innocuous non-conclusive study, facepunch perpetuates story to have something to be mad about and make sweet gamergate jokes, all while giving tabloid sweet sweet revenue and the cycle continues
We keep dividing, we need to recognize people as individuals, instead of by gender. If we did this, we'd recognize that an individual is smarter than everyone else than a group is smarter than another one.
But there's differences in psychology/physique based on your gender... Why would you generate more inaccurate results by not making the distinction?
lol

And we don't need a research to find out about this. We literaly just need to grow up and see it for ourselves.

Poor logic

Poor logic
You can criticize the study as you please, but I don't see anything to make me dismiss out of hand the claim that girls would be better than boys at making video games.
