With 204 invalid votes, the Golden Dawn representative was 'blocked'
[SUB]An image of rare co-existance in the Hellenic Parliament: N. Michaloliakos, G. Panousis and L.Kanelli over the polls.[/SUB] Athens With 204 spoiled votes, the 7th vice president of the Hellenic Parliament ended up not being elected, which according to the Regulation should be from the Golden Dawn. In a statement, GD representatives refer to a 'clear constitutional aberration'. The other vice presidents were elected normally. From New Democracy, the first vice president of the Parliament to be elected was Yiannis Tragakis, second VP, Athanasios Nakos, and third Christos Markogiannakis. All received 235 votes in favour, while 48 whites and 2 invalids were found in the polls. The proposal of SYRIZA for Yiannis Dragasakis for the position of the fourth vice president was accepted by 227 MPs voting in favor, while 57 white and one invalid were noted. Leonidas Grigorakos from PASOK will be the fifth vice president with 228 votes in favor, 54 white and 3 invalid. From Independent Greeks, Maria Kollia Tsarouha, was elected the 6th VP with 225 votes, 56 whites and 3 invalids. The Hellenic Parliament did not vote in favor of Golden Dawn's proposition for Polybios Zisimopoulos for the position of the 7th VP of the Parliament with 204 invalids, 41 in favour and 39 white. The parliamentary strength of Golden Dawn amounts to 18 MPs, and therefore, the party's candidate received 23 more votes from MPs of other parties. As such, the position of the 7th vice president remains empty. Also, the MPs Kostas Koukodimos (ND), Nikos Panagiotopoulos (ND), Nasos Athanasiou (SYRIZA) were elected as deans. The younger in age MPs, Christos Dimas (ND), Kostas Katsafados (ND), Giannis Kefalogiannis (ND), Maximos Senetakis (ND) and Maria Mpolari (SYRIZA) were elected as secretaries. Golden Dawn's Response "The failure to produce the position of the VII' Vice President of the Parliament to the representative of Golden Dawn, Polyvios Zisimopoulos, is a clear constitutional aberration", read a statement of the Golden Dawn. "This is their democracy, and this is how much they respect the verdict of half a million Greeks. The Nationalist Movement will make use of every legal right it has, and our legal department is already preparing our recourse to the European Court. Until then, everyone ought to understand which is the only political power that fights the culprit, for the current position of Greece, political system."
[Source] tl;dr: Golden Dawn MP tried to take a position in the Presidium of the Greek Parliament, pretty much everyone else told him to piss off. With the stock market reporting 5,68% profits, this may be considered a good week for Greece.
Progress!
Good to see they haven't all lost their marbles.
It should be interesting to see them take it to the European Court. They probably don't have a case though. If the 7th VP's position wasn't meant to remain blank upon parliamentary voting , then there wouldn't be a vote for it in the first place.
Aww all the deeply divided parties, who can't agree on anything, coming together to fuck off some neo-Nazis
If they were denied a seat in a way that is legal and in compliance with their laws and regulations and so forth; Then I don't see what the point is. If they blocked them just because, ignoring laws and the fact that they were voted in, then obviously they should take this as far as they can.
They put forth Zisimopoulos as a candidate for the 7th VP of the presidium, there was a vote on whether the rest of the parliament wanted him, with the answer pretty much being 'lolno'. So now, the seat is empty. The Regulation says that the 7th VP seat, if filled, should be filled with the proposition of the GD. Not that they just accept whoever the GD proposes. So, basically, as long as they keep the seat empty and don't give it to another party, like let's say, the Democratic Left (DIM.AR.) it's not a constitutional aberration. In this position, the GD are just being a bunch of crybabies. I'm eager to see their reaction upon being laughed off the European Court.
