"If there are certain aspects of Windows 10 you don’t like you may be able to change them using a registry hack or adjusting settings in the Group Policy Editor. The Group Policy Editor is available in all professional editions of the operating system, but not Home.
It’s a great tool, and lets you bypass annoyances like Microsoft making Cortana 'unkillable'. Unfortunately, in the Anniversary Update Microsoft has restricted what policies are available to Windows 10 Professional users, and blocked the corresponding registry keys so you can’t make the changes that way either."
Well, I guess I won't be installing the anniversary update after all...
Despite me having no issues with Windows 10, and generally preferring it over Windows 7, if this ends up being true, then I guess I'll have no choice but to stop using it.
I suppose we can only hope that the negative reaction from this gets MS to rethink this and back out of it.
Thanks MS!:v:
The update will install itself anyway.
Ok, fuck this shit. I'm considering downgrading to 8.1 because of this bullshit.
Time to switch back to Windows 7 or 8 I guess
Dude, what the fuck Microsoft. Are they actively trying to make themselves look bad or are they just that good at it?
if someone is capable of going through the registry to change settings, they will be capable of doing other technical third party solutions to get what they want.
microsoft will accomplish nothing here besides making themselves look bad
And I was about to switch.
Fucking STOP, MS.
Good thing I might be switching to Fedora.
Microsoft has been pulling this kind of shit since they started offering the free upgrades. It's done nothing but convince me to stay with windows 7.

Fedora is one I have downloaded but haven't tried yet (along with Debian) but I have Mint installed in a virtual machine and have messed around with it a fair bit. If it weren't for the fact most of my programs wouldn't work in Linux I'd be seriously considering switching over the way Microsoft's going with Windows.
what annoying shit tho
I constantly get notifications for office 365. It's annoying
Well, time to just never update or go back to Windows 7 I suppose. Glad I spent 200 USD for Professional edition.

Or just uninstall the "GetOffice" app from the start menu.
Perhaps I'm lucky but I haven't come across ads at all in Windows 10. I'll note though that I'm in Europe and I assume this update hasn't come out yet. That, and I also have signed into my Microsoft account on this computer and this is a fresh install, not an upgrade.
Still though, Microsoft why are you being idiots? Giving away Windows 10 for free was a genius marketing move that got a lot of people to upgrade - why are you ruining that good PR?
Jokes on them I alreadly disabled the Windows update manually from this video tutorial I found.
I fucking hate everything about cortana and it's not even available in canada. I hope they don't enforce the lock screen, Having that disabled was a blessing.
This might just be the push I need to switch to linux full time, I'm running out of reasons to continue using this shit.

I'm mostly still using Windows because of games and software for college. I'm very interested and excited to try out Linux at some stage, probably Ubuntu, at-least on a side PC. I've heard it's better for software development in some cases than Windows, at-least.
I never get any ads or popups on Windows 10. What in the world do you guys have installed that gives you popups all the time?
Apparently office stuff

you won't get them if you don't use the stock start menu or disable tiles.

So people who paid for these features with Windows 10 Pro are having it taken from them? I guess Microsoft just loves to be sued for pulling crap like this.
what annoying shit tho
Cortana, for one. You may like it I don't know, I for one don't want a fucking animated search applet running on my desktop. Ever. Much less 24/7. If I need to search for something I will seek out the appropriate engine, I don't want it sitting there wasting resources. And then there's all the notifications and shit they're pushing for their apps. Here's a huge one: the fucking ads it displays.
I don't even use 10 and I can name three things that annoy me just by simply existing. There's no way in hell I'd be using the anniversary update if I was on 10. Thankfully my copy of 7 is still running strong.
It's obvious that Microsoft wants to turn Windows into software that works how they want it to. I hope this gives more users reason to use, and more developers to support, Linux.

Probably not paying for anything since I'm guessing most people are upgrading to Win 10 for free.
Besides if they do pay, they're paying for Windows 10, not for the ability to disable certain features.
I went through the powershell and removed everything possible from Windows when I first installed it, store stuff, pre-installed programs all useless shit, I recommend everyone do it.

People have had issues with Ubuntu and privacy as well in the past. If you're set on trying Ubuntu though you should consider one of the Ubuntu-based alternatives. I don't know about the ones that are named similarly to Ubuntu (Xubuntu and I think there's one called Kubuntu or something like that, for example) but Mint is Ubuntu-based and respects your privacy a lot better. Though I can't speak for how well it would perform when installed outside a virtual machine. Mint has some lag issues for me in VirtualBox at times (especially when scrolling through folders with a bunch of files) but that could possibly be from it running in a virtual machine rather than being an issue with mint itself. There's also ones like Fedora which TheJoker mentioned earlier and Debian which are supposed to be pretty decent and user-friendly distros as well which you might consider giving a try.
Microsoft is in the right with this one, I think. I mean, it's not my computer that I bought. I'm essentially just borrowing it from Microsoft even though I purchased it, and it makes sense for them to configure my computer as they see fit. Because it's not an operating system that services me, right?
Fuck Microsoft.
Why does Microsoft feel the need to act like idiots? Just make a competent operating system without bullshit, please.
