Rome (CNN) -- Pope Francis is creating a commission to prevent the abuse of minors and to support victims of abuse, Cardinal Sean Patrick O'Malley announced Thursday in Rome. The new commission is expected to tell church officials to collaborate with civil authorities and report cases of abuse, O'Malley said. But he also said that the church has focused on the judicial aspect of sexual abuse in the past, and that Pope Francis now wants to focus on the pastoral side, and caring for victims. The Pope has not yet chosen the members of the new commission but it will be international in composition and include experts, O'Malley added.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/05/world/europe/vatican-abuse-commission/index.html?hpt=wo_bn6 Article is a week old, but I didn't see it anywhere else so hoping it's not late.
Pope Francis = cool old guy. 'nuff said. Hopefully this will mitigate the thinking that all priests are potential child abusers, and maybe make the joke itself irrelevant.
Okay, it took him a while, but this pope has officially won me over. Absolute bro-tier, this one.
This sure is a massive change of stance compared to what the previous popes were doing aka hide it under the rug and only bother explaining if someone looks under it.
You'd think such an institution would already exist already considering how widespread abuse cases in the church are, mad props for pope Francis for creating it.
next time the priest puts his willie in your mouth just bite it off. the fuck
I'm not a biblical scholar so I don't even know if this is possible but priests should be allowed to take wives, or husbands I guess, would be a neat reform that might help with the child molestation.

The whole "priests should never marry and aren't allowed to grow a beard" comes from a really old and odd idea that somehow sex and beards are the most un-priestly thing ever.
Is it just me or is Pope Francis an example of what happens when you take a normal guy and make him Pope? And the reason he seems so good is because all the other guys were lacking in normal morals and ethics (or were to weak to oppose what some hidden political faction was telling them to do)? So Francis comes along and does what any decent human being does and gets super praise for it. Not saying it's stupid that he gets praise, just that we should be questioning why this is the first decent Pope they've had. Shame there is not enough people out there like him. We lost one last week, I hope he inspires people to become amazing
If you told me last year that I could actually see the church make some attempt at this without being coerced into it within the next 20 years I would have laughed at you and called you delusional.

The reason why the church banned it in the first place is due to cash.
Yep, the marriage thing is a good example of a rule that is both relatively new and outdated. It's a great example of how forgetting the meaning of something can seriously fuck shit up, without malicious intent or good reason.
The mentality from the ruling of Darth Sidious is drastically different. I like this guy ...but I am still weary.
God damn, every time I think "that's it, this guy can't get any better" shit like this happens. He's an absolute bro.
Priests are pretty cool. At my brother's wedding we just went in the church through the back and we met the wedding priest just smoking a cigarette in casual clothes and we chatted and stuff. Had a cool beard, long hair and such. Wait a second. Was my brother wed by Jesus?
When Pope Francis was first brought in, I remember everyone saying how he's all talk and that he's not going to change anything. How about now? I'm an atheist by the way but I fucking love this guy.
now he's truly crossed the line. how are priests supposed to get their jollies now, hmmmm? by doing actual priest things? yeah right...

The church held property under the name of the priest pretty much, who would horde the wealth and then pass it down to his sons. Hording town wealth and then passing it down like it was yours to give was a big no-no, so they banned it. Other excuses have come up for it since then, but there's really no huge reason for it now.
truly a worthy pope for our modern age. Out of the two I survived so far this one is top notch.
I think it's great that people support the Pope, because of some of his messages. I'm just worried that they have unrealistic views of him, and what might happen as a result.
The new commission is expected to tell church officials to collaborate with civil authorities and report cases of abuse
Why can't the pope tell them himself, you'd think any moral person would report abuse to the police anyway, guess we'll find out when we know how it works

Being a priest takes a lot of work - saying over half a dozen Masses weekly, running a parish, and so on. Because of that, balancing both family duties and priestly duties can be a lot on a guy. There are Protestant priests who have married and had children, then converted to Catholicism, and so they have quite a workload. It's just less hassle, honestly. I'm pretty sure the Church could abolish it if they wanted to - it's not a spiritual thing, just a matter of practicality. Also, having a beard isn't banned, nor is smoking.
