But now astronomers have found another blue planet, and on this world, instead of water, it likely rains glass — and sideways at that, thanks to the planet's unfathomably strong 4,500 mile-per-hour winds. The gigantic, Jupiter-sized planet, designated HD 189733b, was actually first discovered by French astronomers in 2005. But recent observations made with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have revealed far more fascinating details about its surface conditions and the color of its atmosphere.
Better bring your umbrella!
How assuredly habitable. What's the worst that could happen?
That's pretty fucking metal.
That's pretty fucking metal.
No. It's pretty fucking glass.
No. It's pretty fucking glass.
Fucking is putting it lightly, you'd get eviscerated.
I wish I could hear what that sounds like when it rains
So are we going to colonise it or what
I wish I could hear what that sounds like when it rains
Point two sandblasters at each other and turn them on.
Now I know where to sand blast all these rusty metal plates I have laying around
That planet rains glass, Uranus (apparently) has iceberg sized diamonds in an ocean of liquid diamond. Sure makes our planet seem boring in comparison.
I'm actually really curious to know how a planet can rain glass.
That planet rains glass, Uranus (apparently) has iceberg sized diamonds in an ocean of liquid diamond. Sure makes our planet seem boring in comparison.
We have water, which is a more interesting substance in terms of what it can do
Go there wearing shorts and tshirt.
I'm actually really curious to know how a planet can rain glass.
Abundance of silicates in the atmosphere get turned into glass due to the proximity to its star, absurdly high winds throw the glass crystals around.
id live there, it would be living on the edge. getting food? if it starts raining youre fucked
Inescapable prison colony, go.
It really makes you wonder what other planets out there in the Universe have out of this world environments
Inescapable prison colony, go.
wont stop boris the animal
I doubt you'd even get a chance to worry about the rain when it has 4500 mph winds.
This would make a great anomaly in Endless Space
2,000 degrees Fahrenheit and raining glass. Sounds like something out of an amazing science fiction novel where the world has been destroyed.
That planet rains glass, Uranus (apparently) has iceberg sized diamonds in an ocean of liquid diamond. England still gets worse.
It really makes you wonder what other planets out there in the Universe have out of this world environments
Everyone?
right, so if we decide to land on this planet we're bringing a fucking abrams or something.
right, so if we decide to land on this planet we're bringing a fucking abrams or something.
Pretty sure 4500 mph winds will send that Abrams soaring
right, so if we decide to land on this planet we're bringing a fucking abrams or something.
Shards of glass going 4500mph would shred an abrams
That sounds like some alternate dimension where odd stuff happens.
I wonder if the people that live there look at our planet and think it's amazing that it rains water.
We have water, which is a more interesting substance in terms of what it can do
Im sure we would all agree diamond water is cooler than boring water.
