This morning at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, across the street from Lucasfilm, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger hosted a shareholder meeting where he announced news regarding the first Star Wars stand-alone movie as well as Star Wars: Episode VIII.
Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.
So are these going to be expanded universe movies or just the main characters from the existing saga?
I thought the first spin off we were supposed to get was a dedicated Boba Fett one? Not to say this wouldn't have him in there but I thought it would follow his story.

Just rumours and speculation
Star Wars tbh is the perfect base for amazing spin offs, just like star trek is
but outside of great fanfiction and great games, star wars movies have been greatly neglected. and it's the best medium to tell a star wars story.

I hope that the prequals are rebooted at least
vaders past could have been so much more, and I really want to like those movies.

I imagine it'll be at least 10 years before anybody touches the prequels. Probably after George Lucas passes on.
Hope it's something like the X-wing novels.
I want to see me some Kyle Katarn tbh.
Jedi Outcast/Academy has a special place in gaming heaven for me.

Damn a Boba Fett spinnoff would be amazing. Oh well.
There's no reason Boba still can't show up in some fashion.
I can dig a gritty rebels movie that's like Blackhawk Down or Apocalypse now.
Rogue One sounds like it's going to follow that stormtrooper deserter from the episode VII traiker
The Han Solo Trilogy books would be cool to see as movies
Hopefully some Antilles family action in there.

Maybe Jengo Fett, but I don't think Boba is deserving enough. They can't make a spinoff about a guy this unlucky.

He actually lived though

Not confirmed in the new canon. Though somehow, I doubt they will let Boba stay dead in the new one either.
really shocking title when they're already making a show called star wars:rebels
The Star wars extended universe is awesome but the timeline confuses me a bit as I haven't really gone over it in great detail. Films about the sith vs jedi stuff like the old republic trailers would be awesome

Last year the timeline got wiped, the expanded universe is smaller now.
There's just Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008), Star Wars: Rebels (2014), and about four novels and a comic series. Detailed plot summaries and a complete timeline of all of these are available online.
Fucking Rogue Squadron movieeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Literally nothing in the universe would make me happier than 2 hours of X-Wing antics.

I'm only a minor Star Wars fan, but I'd love to see Rogue Squadron come back. I really hope that's what Rogue One is.
Boba and Kyle fans need to quit it. Your favorite is old and was never really that cool anyway. We need new characters, not stupid meme star wars characters.

Star Wars definitely does not need a guy saying that he has watched a tauntaun crawl along the edge of a straight razor. like i get some dudes want it to be darker cos Empire was so great, but the lengths people want to take it to are excessive to the point of utter goofiness. it reminds me of those awful Star Trek TNG movies where Picard would be vindictively mowing down hordes of dudes and screaming and smashing stuff
