• Gunther von Hagens - The Corpse Artist

Dr. Gunther von Hagens is a self styled 'plastinator'. He came up with a patented method of embalming which replaces water and fats in corpses with resins. With these preserved human cadavers Gunther makes artwork. He says it is to give the public an insight into how the body works. You can decide for yourself if you think he is a genius or a psychopath. In order for you to understand how controversial his work is, you must see it. For those apprehensive to view, they look similar to Kevin Bacon in the movie Hollowman. Be warned, these are real human bodies. Although they look like plastic models and it isn't gory per se, I will still media tag the photographs to avoid upsetting anyone. They are simply too odd to miss. NSFW, suppose that depends on where you work, but still. I like giving my views, so I will put 'em directly above the photo. I can't decide whether his work is something really beautiful, or something disgusting. The scientist in me, and the artist, love them. But it feels slightly immoral. This is one of the more striking pieces. It still retains some emotion in its face. The posing is natural, but still seems peculiar. The corpses are often posed in theatrical poses. This one seems almost degrading to the subject, in my opinion. Some specimens are disected to show the inner organs. Its hard to believe this is real. It looks so fabricated, intricate. This is the most controversial piece. Hagens was acused of being sexually obsessed by corpses after he created this. There are a whole host of other bodies in different poses, including swordfighting, conducting, playing baseball, gambling and more. Hagens has also used animal subjects, these works are in a seperate gallery for those who can't bottle the human exhibits. Gorilla Giraffe Reindeer, complete with christmas presents. So there you go. Personally, I don't think this man is psychotic at all. He just has some fucked up hobbies. What do you guys think? Since you are an opinionated bunch, I'm expecting all kinds of responses. Just remember that all of the bodies used came from willing people who donated them. Would you donate yourself? What pose would you want?
Disgusting and awesome at the same time. I like it.
Wouldn't these decompose after awhile?
Whether you like it or not, it's art.
Wouldn't these decompose after awhile?
As stated, he uses a special system of chemical injections to keep them preserved for years. Without water, the body cannot decompose.
That's fucked up in so many ways.
Fucking awesome. And also in a way kinda odd to look at, after a second you remind yourself that these were once actual living people. I wouldn't mind going to see it in real life to be honest.
Ah you listened to my cries. I like it, as fucked up as it is it's pretty admirable. The guy was such a nice man on Jon Ross.
WHAT THE FUCK. This is fucking sick not art.
Ah you listened to my cries. I like it, as fucked up as it is it's pretty admirable. The guy was such a nice man on Jon Ross.
I did. I couldn't decide at first, but thought it was all too strange so made the thread.
Does this thread remind anyone of this guy?
I saw this in San Diego whilst on holidays to America, it was the business. There was a cheap rip off in Ireland that was not so much the business.
Where does he get his corpses? Do the Next in Kin approve of this? I don't know about you guys, but he's a sick man in my book.
What a freak, this isn't art, that's bullshit.
Does this thread remind anyone of this guy?
Yes, definately. To some extent . . . he is an artist.
WHAT THE FUCK. This is fucking sick not art.
I'm sure he has the permission of the families of these dead people. Why is this sick? It exhibits the intricacies of the human anatomy in a very unique and in-depth way way.
It may be art in some peoples eyes, but that is really fucked up.
I'm sure he has the permission of the families of these dead people. Why is this sick? Who would like their corpse to live on as a statue fucking another corpse?
Holy shit, this really really awesome!
He is German, stuff like this does not surprise me with them. I mean just look at his name 'Gunther von Hagens', it screams mad scientist.
I saw this in California a couple of years back, they didnt have the sex one. Gotta admit the sex one is fucking weird.
But does he have permission from the dead people themselves? Who would like their corpse to live on as a statue fucking another corpse?
I wouldn't mind ending my life like this:
What a freak, this isn't art, that's bullshit.
It has evoked an emotional response from you, therefore it = art.
But does he have permission from the dead people themselves? Who would like their corpse to live on as a statue fucking another corpse?
I would be honored (but that's just me). Better than rotting in a fucking hole.
I'm sure he has the permission of the families of these dead people.
Believe it or not, you can apply to donate your body from his exhibition. The subjects are also allowed to suggest a pose for themselves.
Believe it or not, you can apply to donate your body from his exhibition.
Do I have to pay the shipping? :v:
Do I have to pay the shipping? :v:
Well according to your theories, the community should pay for your shipping.
Do I have to pay the shipping? :v:
Haha. Couldn't say, I think once you are dead you become a possession of Hagens.
I would be honored (but that's just me). Better than rotting in a fucking hole.
But you don't even know the person.
He should put himself on display.
