• More than a million people drink just to feel normal
A new report into alcohol consumption has found 4 million Australians drink out of habit, about 1.4 million of them drinking to ''feel normal''. The Roy Morgan survey, conducted for the Salvation Army, also showed 2.4 million people, and one-third of 18- to 24-year-olds, drink specifically to get drunk. The Salvation Army state drug and alcohol services co-ordinator, Kathryn Wright, said the findings were alarming and showed a culture saturated by alcohol. Of the 1.4 million who say they drink just to feel normal, ''whether that's socially normal or biologically normal, either way it's very concerning,'' she said. ''The very act of getting drunk has health implications every time someone does it.'' Advertisement: Story continues below The survey found the main reason for drinking was social: 61 per cent said they often drank to be sociable, to celebrate or because the people they were with were drinking. ''It's so ingrained in our culture that drinking is the way that you celebrate, it's the way that you commiserate, it's the way that you socialise, that it sort of crosses a boundary that drunkenness in some instances is very socially acceptable,'' Ms Wright said. The Roy Morgan survey was conducted as part of the Salvation Army's annual research into alcohol awareness, which has taken place since 2002. Since then, alcohol consumption overall has declined gradually, mostly among men. But the report showed almost 10 per cent of men drink every day, and 36 per cent consumed more than the recommended amount of alcohol in a single session in the previous month. The director of addiction medicine at St Vincent's Hospital, Dr Jon Currie, said National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines recommended two standard drinks, or less, per day for adults of both genders, with no more than four standard drinks in any one session. ''Above that, the risks start to rise fairly dramatically,'' he said.
Source: http://www.smh.com.au/national/more-than-a-million-people-drink-just-to-feel-normal-20100913-159dd.html :australia:
that's sad.
Alcohol is bad mmkay?
Alcohol makes you feel good. Disagree? I feel good when I drink, dont know about you.
Alcohol makes you feel good.
In small amounts, go over the driving limit and while you may feel relaxed your body actually thinks it's in mortal danger.

I wouldn't exactly take this as fact considering it was conducted for the Salvation Army.
In small ammounts, go over the driving limit and while you may feel relaxed your body actually thinks it's in mortal danger.
Having drinks with friends at home, bit of good music on... Chilled out. That is the life.
Alcohol makes you feel good.
Alcohol is a depressant.
I hate it when my friends are having a pint without me because I hate the taste of beer. Actually that never really happens because I just get cider instead, which I love.
Alcohol is a depressant.
I don't see what you could be saying there except that alcohol doesn't make you happy because it depresses you. Which would be quite dumb to say be cause it is classified as a depressant because it slows down bodily functions. Stimulants do the opposite, they speed up bodily functions.

Though you'd be hard pressed to find good cider in North America.
I've only been wasted drunk 2 times in my life and I am 18. Sure being drunk is good and all, but after that you feel like total shit, even worse if you have to vomit.
I am intrigued. Do tell us more.
It was in the August edition of Wired UK,I'll ty to find it.
hahaha I always laugh when these clever health people kick the lid off their precious imagination box they live in and come out telling everyone how they should live a healthy life you're all going to die folks, and one of the main reasons I always whine at these things is because nobody is going to care about your insignificancy whether you spend your life drunk or not live life, because as cliché it sounds you could get run over by a bus tomorrow and on the way to the hospital the thoughts of never living will cloud your head
Alcohol is a depressant.
Depressant, yes? Not depressing. :frog:
Cider is the beer alternative that doesn't make you look like a pussy. Though you'd be hard pressed to find good cider in North America.
Vodka won't make you look like a pussy
Gin on the rocks. Not as strong as they say :smug:
Ironically, I drank more before I turned 21....now I hardly ever touch the stuff. The novelty of getting shit faced wore off pretty quick for me. Sure, it's fun for like the first hour or two, then you have to endure the comedown which could last 6 hours or more....not to mention the rot gut hangover the next day. I'll drink about two or three beers on the weekend just to get a slight buzz, but getting drunk just isn't fun for me anymore.
Since the limit here is 18, I don't drink. (Respect to da police)But i don't look down on others who drink, but i usually own them by brining my guitar and playing something rather weird (something that works and is almost awful). If they tell me to shut up I ask "why should i?" They have ALWAYS said "It's annoying". I ALWAYS answer "I am annoyed that you're drinking" and yes, i do that just to annoy people.
Vodka won't make you look like a pussy
Vodka is fucking gross, dude. It's used by classless binge drinkers. I have 1-2 beers every day, so I've got a well tempered tolerance and drink it more as a beverage. Vodka is used by party goers who want to get drunk fast.
Theres a lot of people in the world, 1 million isnt a lot
I'm so glad that I'm not one of them Not saying I haven't drank though :saddowns:
Theres a lot of people in the world, 1 million isnt a lot
It's sampled out of Australia. 1 million people in australia.
its fine if your not addicted and walk home raving drunk every day at 3 am.
Alcohol is a depressant.
Partially true, it's more of a mood changer, since if you're too depressed in a way beyond what alcohol does, it can take you to a "lesser level". If you get my point. Basicly: Depress-o-meter: - Alcohol. - Even worse. If you're at "Even worse", alcohol might do good, which it's why it's so common to deal with grief and post-traumatic stress.

This is really sad, drugs are such easy ways to escape sadness and depression. And when you do them while being sad and depressed it's so easy to become dependent on it, and then addicted. [editline]08:04PM[/editline] This includes not only drugs but anything; sports, computer, attention.
I'm pretty sure a lot of people who start smoking do it just to fit in and end up smoking out of habit. I know I started smoking because all my friends did it and now it's kinda hard to stop.

Really, a lot of people smoke, but I don't know why they started doing it.
