A transgender woman has won a five-year legal battle in Italy to remain married to her wife after she underwent a sex change and was told her marriage would be dissolved. Alessandra Bernaroli was born Alessandro and had not undergone sex reassignment surgery when she met her wife 20-years-ago. The couple married in 2005 and Ms Bernaroli said she hid feelings of desperately wanting to become a woman until for years. “I hid my inner torment from my wife but I felt trapped in a prison, in a body that had become an enemy to me. I suffocated my true identity," Ms Bernaroli, 43, told La Repubblica newspaper. Ms Bernaroli, a bank employee from Bologna, eventually opened up to her wife, who agreed to stand by her, and underwent a series of operations in Thailand in 2009. But despite neither of the pair wanting to divorce, when the Bernarolis tried to renew their identity cards later that year they were told by the local council they could no longer be classed as married because of her sex change. Ms Bernaroli said: "My body may have changed, but the love between us remains the same. I’m acting to defend our marriage. “I fell in love with her nearly 20 years ago when I was a man and we love each other as much as the first day we met, despite the fact that after a long journey and many operations I became a woman. Why should the state now try to separate us?” Ms Bernaroli took her case to Italy's national appeals court after the marriage registry’s ruling that her marriage was dissolved was upheld by the local court.
SOURCE: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/italian-transgender-woman-wins-legal-battle-to-remain-married-to-wife-after-sex-change-9534750.html
this is great news ......... now they should kiss each other and......
Did you really need to add that end bit?
First post and already the shitposting
I'm actually surprised that her wife was happy with it. It's great that she was, but I don't know if I could deal with marrying a woman, and having her go through a sex change.
this is great news ......... now they should kiss each other and......
And what?
This is really cute and awesome from a legal perspective.
And what?
And what? That's it? I'm a vampire and here's a million dollars? I'm a vampire and here's your own spaceship? I mean what the f-Ohhh, no, I get it, THEY GOT HIM!
this is great news ......... now they should kiss each other and......
tbh ew
At first I thought this was going to be someone who made a sex change without their partners approval and then fighted the divorce.
That's really awesome that their wife stuck through it with them, I'm totally respectful of transgender people and I hope they get the rights they deserve but I don't think I could do that.
Honestly there's multiple questions that kinda arise here a) does Italy have same sex marriage b) does Italy have civil unions for same sex couples c) does Italy have any kind of recognition for same sex couples d) does Italy have any kind of a special case of a religiou marriage and was this one. If the gender of the person was changed, then you can't actually keep a prexisting marriage working, if the state itself doesn't list them as valid. It's entirely possible that said authorities were acting on some outdated legislature that was overturned during the course of the case itself.

Now that is a love story

She was married to her wife as a man before she got recognition as a trans woman.
That's really awesome that her wife stuck through it with her, I'm totally respectful of transgender people and I hope they get the rights they deserve but I don't think I could do that.
If you are totally respectful of transgender people as you say, please use the proper pronouns as I just did for you. No skirting around that unless somebody's pronouns are actually they/them.
I don't understand how people can be so venomously against something like this. If it's human, and of age, you should be able to marry her/him/it/them.
I don't understand how people can be so venomously against something like this. If it's human, and of age, you should be able to marry her/him/it.
Don't say "it" when referring to a person, come on. That's just wrong.
Don't say "it" when referring to a person, come on. That's just wrong.
I think Megadave meant to say "them", i.e. someone who doesn't go by either gender.
Don't say "it" when referring to a person, come on. That's just wrong.
I guarantee you there is at least 2 people out there who prefer to be called "it".
I think Megadave meant to say "them", i.e. someone who doesn't go by either gender.
yes
I think Megadave meant to say "them", i.e. someone who doesn't go by either gender.
Then Megadave should have said them and not it.
I guarantee you there is at least 2 people out there who prefer to be called "it".
That's besides the point. To call anyone "it" in general is dehumanizing. If somebody specifically uses those personal pronouns for themself, then great for them, but don't use "it" as a general term.

It made perfect sense to me.
You misunderstand. She is a trans woman and so is male-to-female. She was married to her wife as a man before she got recognition as a trans woman.
I know, I was relating the situation to my own sexuality.
Don't say "it" when referring to a person, come on. That's just wrong.
Since when?
this is great news ......... now they should kiss each other and......
i've always found this "lesbians... heee : )" attitude incredibly creepy. thanks for reinforcing that view, facepunch user the evilldeadii
Stop, this isn't tumblr.
arctic is being super nice and respectful about trying to educate people on this stuff, stop whining
Stop, this isn't tumblr.
I think you misunderstood why that statement is used. No thanks for trying, and don't try again, please.
Stop, this isn't tumblr.
so i guess not calling people "IT" is a tumblr thing now, right according to some of you guys anything to do with queer issues or feminism is ~a tumblr thing~. if you hate that site so much, maybe you shouldn't bring it up everytime you're backed into a corner and can't form your own opinion on something. [editline]16th June 2014[/editline] "oh, sio on facepunch? ewwww, don't talk to me about IT."

It doesn't matter how much this person with a mental illness have a sex change. His a man back then and his a man forever, so accept what nature gave you, that you're equipped with a penis for a reason. And this is how nature works whatever you like it or not.
