Then maybe this isn't the thread for you. However, if you're like me, and could sit for hours designing patches, then welcome! This thread is for synthesizer enthusiasts like myself to discuss the latest hardware/software synths, share music, show off your latest work, and perhaps even share patches. Personally, I started off in FL Studios about 5 years ago. At first, I just fiddles around with presets, made a couple of generic tunes, then moved on. However, as I got into trance more and more, I found myself coming back to it and trying different things, but I felt the more advanced options were too complex for me. So, as a change of pace, I moved to Reason 4. I started from square one and taught myself how to use the program, and watched many YouTube tutorials. Then, I started programming my own sounds once I got my first MIDI controller, a Yamaha KX-25. Ever since then, I've found myself sitting at my PC 8-12 hours straight on some occasions, hammering away at a new song, testing old patches, and programming new ones to fit where nothing else does. So, what are your favorite synthesizers Facepunch? What's your favorite DAW? Do you prefer hardware synths over software ones? Have you recently bought a MicroKorg and are experiencing buyer's remorse? Or are you stuck in New Wave with a couple of fossils your father got bored of or you found on Craigslist?
I still don't know much about synth designing or playing keyboards but damn I love me them spacey sounds :buddy:
my friend has tons of analogue synths and he lets me play and record them i'm so lucky
What have you got against the MicroKorg?
I have an SH-201 and a couple of free VSTi synths. That's how I roll.
FL Studio.

Do you know what he has?
What have you got against the MicroKorg?
It calls itself a synthesizer, but it's not a true synthesizer. IT has some half decent sounds but there's not much you can get out of it like you would be able to with an SH-201. [editline]25th January 2011[/editline]
I have an SH-201 and a couple of free VSTi synths.
Lucky. Do you know what he has?
like a lot of moog and roland gear his tb and tr shit rocks
Moog? How old is that bad boy?
I'd love to get my hands on a Korg MS-20 or a Moog prodigy. [editline]25th January 2011[/editline] Some Doepfer stuff would be pretty bitchin.
Moog? How old is that bad boy?
pretty old, it's a memory moog totally goes out of tune in a split second but it sounds heavenly
I got a Microkorg XL, not perfect for making sounds, but the vocoder is a big bucket of fun. fuckloads of softsynths. Korg Monotron on my wishlist, if only for filters
Shit sounds cool This is good
I got a Microkorg XL, not perfect for making sounds, but the vocoder is a big bucket of fun.
I am harsh on the Microkorg XL, and you're right, for sitting down and creating sounds right there with the hardware, it's no good. You can create base sounds with the software, but that defeats the purpose of having a hardware synth. But the vocoder is pretty fun, I usually play around with it when I go to Guitar Center. [editline]26th January 2011[/editline] Also, this song has a place in this thread. Legendary synths!
I would love to have one but the lack of knowledge and musical understanding prevents me from buying one. Still I like playing a keyboard so I bought an ordinary one with loads of sounds and beats. Synthesizer are so damn expensive.

Synthesizer are so damn expensive.
you can get a MIDI controller, its practically the same thing, and its more versatile. A decent one should come with more than enough knobs and sliders to map synth settings on. I got a 49 key midi controller for 150 bucks and I'm more than happy with it. I just hardly have any time to use it, with school and me wasting my spare time on forums, such as this one.
i haven't actually been able to get my hands on a hardware synth but i've dicked around a lot with software synths it's so goddamn addicting
Indeed it is. This is my MIDI controller. The built in arpeggiator is amazing. This thing was a hell of a deal for 100 dollars.

That looks like a far better deal than the 49 oxygen I bought for a 150 bucks.

[editline]26th January 2011[/editline] I want to get a Roland Juno though.
I have the 25key version of that. [editline]26th January 2011[/editline] I want to get a Roland Juno though.
juno's are nice they won't make too radical of sounds but they have strings to die for
Just to make sure people understand, a MIDI controller will not make sounds, it only transmits midi data. I've got a Oxygen 49. It works quite nicely. My main complaint is that there is no external power and no midi output.

I'm a pretty avid synth fan myself, I went down to a music store and bought this beauty the other day I'm still working out the best way to make use of the MIDI Interface, but apart from that it's pretty much perfect, the scope of sounds it can make are pretty varied. Fuck that guy who laughed at me when I bought it.
Yeah well, I personally like my hardware to be computer indepent too, But i wanted a cheapish synth. Also, you learn to use the hardware features adeptly fairly quickly.
Well, for the massive capabilities of the new Roland SH-01 (Gaia), it's actually pretty cheap as far as synths go. I believe right now it is running for $800 USD.
for less than that you can find analogue gear with much more interesting qualities
Since this is a synthesis thread, that's one sound I've never achieved. The synth line starting at 00:40, that is. Any ideas?
for less than that you can find analogue gear with much more interesting qualities
This is also true. Craigslist is perfect for this because a lot of the time, people don't know the value of what they're selling. Either that, or they try to rip you off. But it is a gold mine.
