Sheriff's deputies launched a manhunt Saturday after three male inmates escaped from the Orange County Central Men's Jail in Santa Ana, authorities said.
At about 9 p.m. on Friday, prison officials discovered that Hossein Nayeri, 37, Jonathan Tieu, 20, and Bac Duong, 43, were unaccounted for, according to Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities conducted a search of the Central Jail Complex, the nearby Civic Center and surrounding areas, but did not locate the three inmates.
The men were last confirmed to be seen at 5 a.m. Friday, Hallock said at a Saturday morning news conference.
Hallock said Saturday afternoon investigators believe the three inmates cut through steel bars, made it to the roof of the jail and then rappelled down using sheets in what he called a "very well thought out" escape plan.
All three inmates were in custody for violent charges, the Sheriff's department said.
The jail didn't have a fence? They literally just had to rope down and walk away?

If I remember right the jail there is just next to a big parking structure for the courthouse. I don't remember seeing a big fence when I had jury duty but it is a fairly tall building with teeny windows. Security is everywhere though so no idea how noone saw them.
i gotta say this is pretty impressive and reminds me of that alcatraz escape that 3-4 people did ages ago
Maybe it's just some sorta mental bias but I swear I hear "Orange County Jail" really, really often.

What kind of a prison would it be if it was 100% secure?
Anyways, let's just hope they don't end up killing somebody on their path to escape. Holy crap two were in for murder, third for torture what the fuck...

There are a whole bunch of Orange Counties, two of which are in major population centers.
Prison escapes always make for such interesting stories. The tight security makes it so that escapees have to be creative and resourceful with their methods. Makes it amusing to read about(though the implications, not so much of course)

It's not a prison. For those who don't know, in the US when you get arrested, you go to jail, where you are held until trial. If you're convicted of a felony, you go to prison. Since prisons exclusively hold felons long-term, they tend to be much more secure.

Jails are operated locally, usually by the Sheriff's Office/Department, while prisons are operated on a state or federal level

Lol good point, I don't know why I referred to it as 'prison' back there. Even the term 'jail' was used in the post that I was quoting.
