CDProjekt announce NO DRM AT ALL in The Witcher 3! None!
Hey, following our recent announcement of the distribution deals of The Witcher 3 in North America and Europe, there have been some concerns regarding DRM and previous legal issues with The Witcher 2. We’ve seen a lot of comments in various places around the web and we would like to join in on the conversation.
I’d like to say it loud and clear: The PC version of The Witcher 3 will have absolutely no DRM from day 0. Zero. Zip. Nada. It doesn’t matter if you choose to buy it on GOG.com and support us directly or buy the game in box format, you’ll still get the 100% DRM-free experience. And this goes for the whole world.
Great devs, hope they make it a bestseller!
CDProjekt know what's up!
I thought they had said this before?
I hope this sets a new precedent for the industry and they find great success. It will be interesting to see what happens at least.
I hope that means that if you buy the disc copy you'll still get a Steam key.
So the Steam copy will not require Steam to be running to launch the game, then?

Most likely a confirmation on their part, but the post was put up today, and wasn't in SH already, so I figured it's an official declaration from them and that SH would appreciate it.
So the Steam copy will not require Steam to be running to launch the game, then?
I imagine it'll let you install it and play through steam, but be like some of the steam games which let you zip up the files, move to another computer, extract and play on that without steam being needed. I might be wrong though.
So the Steam copy will not require Steam to be running to launch the game, then?
Ofcourse the steam copy is always gonna require steam, but any non-steam copies will not.
I'm getting this fucker the second it hits GoG. Good god, I haven't looked at anything in regards to gameplay and shit, I'm just excited because of the story and beard. I just hope it doesn't melt my computer.
watch the sales fucking skyrocket and leave companies like EA scratching their heads
Ofcourse the steam copy is always gonna require steam, but any non-steam copies will not.
not all games require steam to be running, only games with the steamworks DRM do
Witcher 3 confirmed for outselling GTA5
Ofcourse the steam copy is always gonna require steam, but any non-steam copies will not.
That would go against every sentence that is in the article. If it works to where you can go into the game's folder and launch it without Steam in a sort of Origin style, that would be fine.

Ohoho, calm down.
IF THAT happens.... it would be a god damn miracle.
That would go against every sentence that is in the article. Steam IS a form of DRM no matter how you look at it.
Except that is entirely wrong. Games that do not use the Steamworks DRM platform can be launched directly from the executable without steam even being INSTALLED on the machine let alone running. It is a distribution platform, with an optional DRM platform for the developer.

so you're saying every humble bundle that has steam keys is not DRM free?
except you don't need steam to run this. Of course getting it on steam means you need steam, but theres nothing else. And you don't even have to activate it on steam.
that plus, Steam isn't DRM, at lesat not entirely. It's far more about distribution than DRM. It's pretty easy to pirate valve games of all things so even if it was pure drm it's not very forceful. (Not to justify it, obviously)

I doubt it. A gog key seems more likely (they did this for TW2).

Steam is a distribution service, not all games use their drm. Just because you have it on steam doesn't mean you need steam to run it.
Watch this game sell well. Then EA and Ubisoft can officially take their heads out from their asses.

that plus steam offline mode

Oh I didn't realise this, I knew it worked for some games though.
Interesting times when a company have to flat out make an announcement to state they won't have DRM.

Not only that, but it being a selling point is rather sad.

That wouldn't work due to registry keys and stuff.
Not only that, but it being a selling point is rather sad.
to be fair, it's also good to make it a selling point, especially if the game sells well.
it pushes DRM away even further.
albeit better to have DRM like Serious Sam 3 or Batman.
That wouldn't work due to registry keys and stuff.
You could include the installer in the .zip....
Also the registry keys are just for adding programs to the Windows uninstall menu. You can run an .exe without it.
it's sad this actually has to be stated
I'm going to go out of my way to reward this good business practice by buying this game at or near launch (as my finances allow). They're going out of their way to please the customer, only fair I return the favor.
if it ends up succesful despite this, i really do hope many other developers following suit, getting real fucking tired of 3 layers of DRM
