On Wednesday, tourists fled and shops hurriedly closed their shutters as Dutch soccer fans took over the central marketplace known as Campo de' Fiori — Field of Flowers — and left it a field of trash. On Thursday the rampage moved to the Spanish Steps. TV footage showed hundreds of drunken men urinating in empty beer bottles and then hurling them at the baroque La Barcaccia fountain, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1627. Interviewed by a TV reporter, art expert Anna Maria Cerioni could barely hold back tears as she described the state of the fountain, with broken marble fragments of up to 8 by 3.5 centimeters. She added, "The damage (to the fountain) is permanent."
Link
The mayor of Rome said Friday that Italy's capital is not secure against the threat of terrorist attacks after hundreds of marauding Dutch soccer fans rampaged through the city's historic center and damaged a just-renovated 400-year-old Bernini masterpiece at the foot of the Spanish Steps. Beyond the damage to the fountain, city officials said the hooligans vandalized city buses and other properties, and Italy's commerce federation estimated that the forced closure of stores, including luxury fashion boutiques in the streets surrounding the Spanish Steps, cost about 3 million euros ($3.4 million) in sales. No respect for anything. All because of a damn soccer game. People love to act like bigots.
fucking hoodlums, have some fucking self control and go back to killing each other
Some hooligans got fines of like 40,000 Euro. Totally justified, the most they do here is give these assholes a ban from all stadiums when they start destroying shit after a game.
Hooligans are really the dumbest kind of people. Vandalizing stuff over a football match, how simple-minded can you be.
Destroying art is a crime But hurting people is worse. I'm just glad no one was killed
I would argue that it has little to do with football and just being an ass.
Probably, not that it matters much anyways, since their actual motivation for doing this couldn't be much dumber than that. :v:
Thread title should have been Vandals Sack Rome.
It's mass mentality and euphoria of the crowd feeling powerful and unstoppable. It's why police always tries to break crowds up even if the individuals aren't that important nor considered dangerous, as rowdy crowd can be far wilder and malignant than any of it's members would be on their own.
Fucking football hooligans, and I thought they were bad enough over in the UK.
A lot of Dutch football clubs have a small but hardcore hooligan following. They often don't give a shit about the match and only show up to cause trouble. They really are some ofthe worst people. They ruin a fun game for everyone else. It's such a shame, because Dutch football fans are usually known for being happy and fun to be around.
I hope the damage on that fountain isn't to severe, its a gorgeous piece of work.
quote from article
That doesn't mean it's severe though.
That doesn't mean it's severe though.
If the damage is permanent and can't be fixed, I think it adds to the severity.
The sad thing is there are people here in Rotterdam collecting money tot donate. It's sad because they aren't collecting the money to give to rome. But are giving it to the holligans who have to pay the fines.
Ultras are the most annoying sub culture I have ever witnessed, such cunts
I cant believe that they just mindlessly damaged something thats been there since 1627 those people suck
Reminds me of walking by a Dutch bar in NYC following Netherlands victory over Brazil in 2014 world cup...third place never looked so victorious and drunk.
