Somali pirates are reported to have received a total of $12.3m (£7.6m) in ransom money to release two ships. They are believed to have been paid a record $9.5m (£5.8m) for Samho Dream, a South Korean oil tanker, and nearly $2.8m (£1.7m) for the Golden Blessing, a Singaporean flagged ship. "We are now counting our cash," a pirate who gave his name as Hussein told Reuters news agency. "Soon we shall get down from the ship." All crew are believed to be unharmed. The Samho Dream supertanker was hijacked in the Indian Ocean in April and its crew of five South Koreans and 19 Filipinos were taken hostage. It was carrying crude oil worth $170m (£105m) from Iraq to the US. Although released it is still within Somali waters and the ship's 24 crew members are said to be in good condition. Andrew Mwangura, co-ordinator of the East African Seafarers Assistance Programme in Mombasa, told Reuters that the ransom would be the highest paid out to pirates since they started hijacking ships in recent years. What I can confirm is that negotiators tell me they agreed to make the drop with an amount in excess of $9m. "This would be the highest sum paid out to pirates so far," he said. The BBC's Kevin Mwachiro in Nairobi says the size of the payment is likely to change the rules of engagement when it comes to securing the release of ships held by Somali pirates. They are currently holding at least 25 vessels. Earlier reports said the pirates had received $9m for Samho Dream and $7m for the Golden Blessing, but this was later revised. The Golden Blessing has 23 Chinese crew. According to a recent report by the International Maritime Bureau, a maritime watchdog, ship hijackings hit a five-year high in the first nine months of 2010, with Somali pirates responsible for the majority. I wonder how they pull it off so well without getting intercepted by the navy.

Just more incentive to steal more shit.
I wonder how they pull it off so well without getting intercepted by the navy.
Pretty easily since Somalia doesn't have a navy (nor a government which controls the whole country), and its coastline is quite long thus making UN ineffective
Why can't the US just send in some special forces and kill off the pirates after the ransom has been payed?
Why can't the US just send in some special forces and kill off the pirates after the ransom has been payed?
why does the US care?
Why can't the US just send in some special forces and kill off the pirates after the ransom has been payed?
It would cost more than they paid the pirates.
why does the US care?
Trade loss and international crimes.
Trade loss and international crimes.
Except the US is already broke, why do they have to be the world police for absolutely everyone?
Except the US is already broke, why do they have to be the world police for absolutely everyone?
Cuz' no one else wants to carry the burden.
They should rig up some explosives in the money so when they have everything they blow the pirates up.
Cuz' no one else wants to carry the burden.
That's a piss poor reason.
Except the US is already broke, why do they have to be the world police for absolutely everyone?
The UN, NATO, anyone who could get these guys off of this planet.
That's a piss poor reason.
I really don't think China/Russia would want to have their own wallets drained out, and every other international organization already has America's blight on it.
Complain when we are the world police, complain when we aren't Make up your minds, world!
Complain when we are the world police, complain when we aren't Make up your minds, world!
Except the US is never the world police.
Alright, so the USA, which has no money, needs to go to one of the worst places on the planet that's also half way across the world to deal with pirates, that don't threaten them in the least, to get a couple ships back for a south Korean and a Singaporean company. [editline]6th November 2010[/editline]
Complain when we are the world police, complain when we aren't Make up your minds, world!
Two different groups complaining
Holy shit, why aren't the pirates rich yet!
because it's the warlords on land who order the pirates around that get almost all of the money and not the actual people boarding the ships and taking people hostage? Do you think there's some kind of pirate codex that promises them a fair share of the money or something?
Seriously? We're going to let these fuckers get their money? Suitcase bombs anyone?
Suitcase bombs anyone?
We're not Terrorists...

The only way to deal with the pirates is to send Bruce Lee's ghost. /joke
