Repeating radio signals coming from a mystery source far beyond the Milky Way have been discovered by scientists. While one-off fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been detected in the past, this is the first time multiple signals have been detected coming from the same place in space.
FRBs are radio signals from deep space that last for just a few milliseconds. Since their discovery over a decade ago, scientists have been searching for more to try to understand their origin. At present, there are several theories as to what they could be, with most involving some cataclysmic event like a supernova or a neutron star collapsing into a black hole.
All of the events seen so far appear to have been one-offs, with subsequent observations failing to find follow-up bursts coming from the same position as the original. However, an international team of researchers has now discovered an additional 10 bursts coming from the same direction as FRB 121102, using the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico.
Publishing their findings in the journal Nature, the researchers report the subsequent bursts have the same dispersion measures and sky positions as the original FRB. This, they say, means the source must have survived whatever event caused the FRB to be produced in the first place – i.e. it cannot have been a cataclysmic one-off event. They also found the bursts differed in brightness from other FRBs, suggesting a different source.
Paul Scholz, from McGill University, was the first person to notice the repeating burst: "I knew immediately that the discovery would be extremely important in the study of FRBs."

In the study, researchers suggest the repeating bursts are coming from a very young neutron star. "Although there may be multiple physical origins for the population of fast radio bursts, these repeat bursts with high dispersion measure and variable spectra specifically seen from the direction of FRB 121102 support an origin in a young, highly magnetised, extragalactic neutron star," they wrote.
The reason why this is significant is that these pulses are generally one-off, i.e. they do not repeat. This is because they usually originate from a one-time event; a cataclysmic collision or some big explosion. Repeated signals from the same source indicates this is not the case.
Could just be a pulsar, though.
not aliens.
But I want it to be aliens

Ancient Aliens.
Ancient Aliens.
Not those ones though
If its a pulsar, its still a pretty cool find. Lighthouses of the cosmos and all.
But in all honesty, I really hope its a message from Vega...
We're not really for alien invasions yet.
Could just be a pulsar, though.
i would think this would be the first explanation to be tested since pulsars are usually the goto source for repeated radio signals, though this one would have to be rotating very slowly
We're not really for alien invasions yet.
Yeah, Europe can't handle two at the same time.
Every time a thread like that pops up I take a few seconds before reading the article thinking "what if this is THE one?" And then I read the article. And it's just kind of sad.
Its just going to be a microwave in the lunch room.
I have been sent by the government to post that it is not Aliens, stop having fun and think rationally like the intelligent person you are.

Damn son.

We actually are but after the dramatic final battle, the generic scientist will turn his head slowly towards the sky and speak "That was only the scouting force"
Considering how long it would take the signal to get here they're probably ancient dead aliens
"ancient dead aliens" is something we should save for the unlikely event that we manage to kick their asses
Considering how long it would take the signal to get here they're probably ancient dead aliens
Either that or they ascended to a "higher" existence as sentient nanite swarms. Or brains in jars that've been immortalized through some sort of cybernetic pickling process.
Could still be pulsars thought.
What if aliens haven't come to earth because they've like, picked up all our movies about us killing aliens, and now, they think we are racist against aliens
But I want it to be aliens
Alien pulsars then

I'd watch this
Exciting. I have a sister who's had experience with radio signals and the ionisphere, so I guess I'll ask her what's up.
Not those ones though
Fresh aliens?
What if aliens haven't come to earth because they've like, picked up all our movies about us killing aliens, and now, they think we are racist against aliens
But they'd also pickup all our star trek and see that we also are terrible at first contacts

Not even a space-microwave either

We also have to make the aliens pay for it. Just because.

GUYS IT'S REALLY ALIENS THIS TIME IT'S REALLY THEM, WE-
oh
it's just the microwave I guess
ok I guess
we're so lonely

We should just constantly transmit ET out to the universe, breaking it up with the occasional episode of Third Rock from the Sun.
After that drunk alien dude stopped at mars to take a leak and we went all nuts about finding water on Mars his wife got pissed and now she is space texting him angry texts about divorcing and sending all their 348 children to a space catholic boarding school in the Andromeda galaxy. He really just should have held his bladder 'till he arrived at the Zeta Riticuli Star Port and have taken a leak on the space ferry back home.
Kidposting aside, I would wish it was aliens, really would.
