Battlefield 3 lead platform 'switched to consoles' mid-development
Battlefield 3's lead development platform "switched" to consoles in mid-production, DICE GM Karl-Magnus Troedsson has confirmed.
The DICE boss shared the news in the latest issue of PSM3, where he revealed that despite Battlefield 3 looking very much like a shooter designed for advanced PC hardware, the latter stages of Battlefield 3's construction lead on PS3 and Xbox 360 in order to meet release on time.
"We said originally that the PC was the lead SKU of the game, but in mid-production we switched to console as lead platform to make sure we could get all the versions done for release," Troedsson confirmed.
"Our ambition at DICE is to use the power of each individual platform to get the most out of the game," he added.
"In the case of the PS3... I understand that if you compare it to a high-end PC, it's not going to look as good. But if you compare it to other games on the PS3, including other games we've done previously, I have to say I'm very happy with how it looks.
"Hopefully people will agree when they look at it in the same way."
EA previously said it lead development on PC because that audience "has been the one complaining."
Exec producer Patrick Bach said: "We actually havent heard any complaints from the console audience. We are letting the PC audience make use of the very expensive hardware they just bought so they can tick all the boxes and go for the 64-player fights"

A delayed game is good, but worth the wait.
A rushed game is bad forever.
Well i didn't notice anything related to being a console port, so job well done dice.
Meh, I'm okay with it in this case.
I was going to be angry, but I see no signs of a console port, it's clear that the PC version was developed for PCs. It sounds like they just moved over some of their resources from the PC team so they could make sure the console versions were playable by release, which is fine.
Cross platform development is A-OK as long as you don't try selling a console port as a native PC game.
From talking with my friends on PC, and playing on xbawkz myself, it's a good port. Well done DICe
Doesn't excuse them for Battlelog. Or Origin.

Excuse them? Whats wrong with battlelog and origin?
Consoles don't have to operate their game from a web browser.

I haven't seen origin as a problem, but you have to be blind to not see how gimmicky battlelog is. Can't join games, crashes, disconnections, parties are buggy, can leave bf3 running in background A LOT making it impossible to join a new game without forcing you to manually end the process.
Still a port none the less when BF was a PC game to begin with.
I got bf3, i enjoy it to a degree. But I will not let go how dice butchered the battlefield name.
How hard was it to give us the same game play mechanics, maps, squads, commanders with the updated engine? Apparently it was to hard.
A lot of people call themselves fans of BF but a real fan wouldn't let them get away with fucking up Squads, making the maps a clusterfuck, taking out the commander role, etc. Battlelog is a cluster, how hard is it to just use a normal ingame browser, and origin. All that program is a regular download manager they have had and it got re-branded and added other functions that hardly work.
Why didn't DICE CEO just come out and say it.
"We wanted to get the game out before modern warfare 3 so we could pull in as much profit as possible before it releases, since we have no confidence it will last up against mw3 in the long term sales. With that in mind, we started consolizing the game so we could fit the game into the release window that would pull the most profit for us, I hope you aren't mad."
Oh jeeze, god forbid they give you free built in stat tracking and kit progress, and origin isn't that bad, stop being a cry baby.

-Gabe Newell
It's true! He said something very similiar. He said suck instead of bad :P
Edit:
On the comment of Origin and Battlelog, I think they're both ok, I just hate running Steam and Origin at the same time.
It's not too, too bad. But I would still prefer an in-game browser. I just dont like the idea of constantly opening and closing a game if I want to switch servers.
Doesn't excuse them for Battlelog. Or Origin.
people who thought of origin can go kill themselves.
but battlelog sounds just fine. all it is is stat tracking from what i have heard.
Even though this game is really enjoyable. It does feel very rushed.
Very obvious and annoying glitches are very common.
Oh jeeze, god forbid they give you free built in stat tracking and kit progress, and origin isn't that bad, stop being a cry baby.
My problem is that me, and many others can't make battlelog working, so i can't access coop, or go in a battlelog squad. I have tried everything they say will help on the forums, and the support tells me that will work. The buildt in stat tracking and kit progress works, its just some of the other parts that wont.
Origin won't let me get rid of the BF3 Beta. It's stuck on my "My Games" list with no way of uninstalling. Origin is a wonderful service.
BF3 is already a solid game and patches can roll in to make it even better. I have no complaints about the actual game, just the distribution service.
Excuse them? Whats wrong with battlelog and origin?
Origin is spyware and Battlelog doesn't work for many people.

You have to go to Live Support and ask them to remove it from your list.
So that's why the PC version is filled with bugs and glitches. Fuck you DICE for fucking with our trust, like most other developers.
Rabid fanboys rating me dumb
Battlelog is great, nothing wrong with it when it actually works.
You can't say it's bad just because you can't join a server because of some error, the game just launched so obviously there will be issues and when it all get fixed Battlelog will be amazing.
And there is nothing wrong with Origin, no it is not spyware just because someone on the internet said so.
Origin is kind of a big deal? Not really. Anecdotally, Origin hasn't caused me a single problem thus far, whereas Steam has a history of fucking up. I don't want most of Steam's features, in fact many of them are quite a nuisance, hell Origin even loads faster than Steam does.
People made a big deal out of Origin in the same way they made a big deal out of Steam when it first came out, only Origin is far better than Steam was when it was first released (which you would expect, it being 2011 now).
I agree with him.
You have to go to Live Support and ask them to remove it from your list.
Thanks. It's pretty bad when you have to go to support to get rid of a game.

Then fuck being a "real fan".
EA's just gotta work full-tilt for the next few months to patch this game, most notably the PC version.
Other than that, I'm very happy with the game.. it's just great, besides from the weird bugs.
(excluding the crashing and failing attempts to join servers)
Origin is spyware and Battlelog doesn't work for many people.
Spyware? In that case, Steam is spyware aswell. You do realise Steam monitors your hardware AND software and publishes them? They have pretty much the same terms of agreement.
And where is the source that Battlelog doesn't work for many people? I mean, I've experienced a few issues myself but that's normal this early of a release.
Well i didn't notice anything related to being a console port, so job well done dice.
Kidding? There isn't even ping in the server browser, you can't make your own squads and you can't talk in co-op besides voice chat which doesn't even work
I don't know if this relates to developing the user interface in regard to gamepads, but I wish customising your load out while in a game was a bit less awkward to use, it's very obvious that it was designed to be navigated with a gamepad.
Doesn't bother me that consoles were the focus though. Still was a good game (well, at least the multiplayer).
So THATS why the key binding is fucked beyond all repair.
What is WRONG with the idiotic developers.
Battlelog has some issues. But so did Steam when it came out, and continued for some time. Origin isn't all that bad. Yeah, its there, and it isn't steam, so it does lose points there, however the only thing that needs patching out of game is battlelog, and that ain't nearly as complex.
BF3 does still need some patches, of course, but the only bugs I've experienced have been hilarious and not game breaking.
Saw a jet hit the ground, scrape for a bit, and then take off.
Hit over 120KPH in the LAV-AD going backwards and then proceeded to Mako the cliffside before bouncing over several 10 foot walls, a tank, and finally flipping over and exploding.
Friend got hit by a jet while in a tank (I was following in AA, but failed to shoot it down in time), jet exploded, and from the smoke cloud came a fucking flying tank as it soared over me and landed behind me, mostly intact. Friend lived.

You're part of the reason why game developers today are too lazy to actually polish their games. You blindly accept whatever is being shoved in your mouth. My goodness forbid we actually have games today that have the same level of gameplay quality to match the graphical quality and a game that is worth your hard-earned $65. Maybe if you actually worked for your money day in and day out you would be more pissed, but apparently, this isn't the case.
Just because Battlefield 3 looks pretty doesn't mean it plays well. I don't know about you but I'm not going to be a fan being scammed with a bait and switch technique, being promised and never receiving. I'm not going to be a fan of the video game industry monetization and corporatism if it meant that once good games would be fucked up so we could pay MORE MONEY FOR DLC.
I like the gameplay and the game but it really feels like a Bad Company game rather than the Battlefield 2 sequel that I was hoping for

The game is fucking fine, the only people complaining about it are the retards that expected BF2 HD and will whine their way to hell and back if, god forbid, a developer changes on tiny thing in a new game. If you wanted a game like the older one, just fucking play the older one.
