• Chris-chan's Boycott Worked: Sonic Boom Becomes Worst Selling Major Sonic Game In History
Sonic Boom has the distinct honour of becoming the worst selling major Sonic title in history, after figures revealed by SEGA in the company’s latest holdings report. Both versions of the game, Rise of Lyric (Wii U) and Shattered Crystal (3DS) have managed to shift 490,000 copies in total – however, there’s no confirmation this is actual copies sold or simply shipped. This news comes following the announcement of the loss of 300 jobs at SEGA, closure of their San Francisco office, and shifting their focus to digital titles. Stephen Frost, producer of Sonic Boom, has been confirmed as part of these losses. To compare, Sonic Lost World, the previous Wii U/3DS exclusive Sonic title under the Nintendo deal, managed to sell 640,000 copies by December 2013. It went on to have 710,000 copies sold by March 2014. It’s not all bleak though – another big title from SEGA last year, Alien: Isolation from developer Creative Assembly, managed to shift 1,760,000 copies. SEGA have also said the Sonic franchise will be “reinforced” to generate stable profits for the company.
Source. Looks like the sales lived up to the quality of the game.
Very much deserved, don't buy a game till it's finished, and in this case it never was
Will the Franchise die, or is it effectively immortal by now?
Will the Franchise die, or is it effectively immortal by now?
This game was just licensed shovelware, so I doubt they'll stop any time soon.
To add insult to injury, just think of how much they spent to make a tv show for this. If Roy Mustang as Knuckles can't sell your product nothing can.
Will the Franchise die, or is it effectively immortal by now?
I don't think Sonic is going anywhere anytime soon:
SEGA have also said the Sonic franchise will be “reinforced” to generate stable profits for the company.
[editline]12th February 2015[/editline]
To add insult to injury, they made a tv show for this.
The sad thing about this is the TV show is somewhat decent as well, which will probably have the plug pulled on it because of the failure of the game.
I've watched a play though of it and it was fucking hilarious how broken it was
Will the Franchise die, or is it effectively immortal by now?
shovelware won't stop them. I'm sure they will just stop using third-party for sonic games now.
Will the Franchise die, or is it effectively immortal by now?
Check out DeviantArt for anything Sonic related.
Sonic's arms are blue
Sonic Boom is a well-polished, well-written video game and is undeserving of all the crap it gets
To add insult to injury, just think of how much they spent to make a tv show for this. If Roy Mustang as Knuckles can't sell your product nothing can.
The game was made for the show IIRC.
I don't understand how Sonic keeps fluctuating like this First we had the Genesis classics, which were great. Then we had Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R, which were bad. Then we had Sonic Adventures 1 and 2, which were alright. Then Sonic Heroes, Sonic '06, Shadow The Hedgehog, etc, the Sonic dark ages Then Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations made the franchise good again Now we're back to complete and utter shit
Reminder that Nintendo paid for this ahead of time to be exclusive hoping it would be good
It's such a shame. I admit, I did hope this game would turn out to be good, because it had old Crash devs behind it. Even when everyone was bitching about the early models and blue arms, I was like, "ah, screw 'em, they're all just doom and gloom because they're sperging out about the designs, I bet the actual game itself will be fine." I hate it when idiots turn out to be right.
Reminder that Nintendo paid for this ahead of time to be exclusive hoping it would be good
God, can you imagine how shitty the game would have been if they had to focus on releasing it for multiple platforms? Would it be more broken than big rigs: OTRR?
great thing is this shit game got the shit sales it deserved bad thing is that the title is probably what chris-chan actually believes

You know a game is going to bomb when nearly everyone working on it bailed during development. They should have just taken the message and not have released it but instead we get another Sonic 06 where they just say "fuck it" and release the game unfinished.
Will the Franchise die, or is it effectively immortal by now?
Any company will eventually fall apart if they fuck up enough, I mean even if you're only losing a dollar a year no company has infinite reserves, no matter how huge they are. I mean for example, Nintendo in 2012 supposedly had 10.5 billion dollars, and 6.5 billion in equipment/property/investments, so they could potentially hemorrhage a billion dollars for ten and a half years before they even had to start selling off things to prolong their bankruptcy. Sega, I'd bet, is much less secure - if they keep fucking up like this they won't be around much longer
Sonic is never going to die. Even if SEGA managed to go completely under, someone would try to obtain the IP (at the very least, Nintendo would be interested if no other takers are). What I don't get is how they managed to make almost all of their 2D platformers good or great (Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic CD, Knuckles' Chaotix for the Genesis/CD/32X, Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Advance 3 for the GBA, Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure for the DS), then completely screw up Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in so many ways when their original intent with that game was to recreate the 2D era of Sonic in the first place.
Sonic 4 wasn't bad, it was just mediocre. I had the first episode on Wii. I heard the Rivals games were worse.
The sad thing about this is the TV show is somewhat decent as well, which will probably have the plug pulled on it because of the failure of the game.
How is that a bad thing?

This kinda says it all
Uh, excuse you?
OK to be fair Sonic Heroes wasn't THAT bad, but it wasn't amazing either
The quality of sonic games fluctuates like the seasons. The dark cold winters will feel like a long pain till hope is revived with the spring of hope. But really I'm hoping for something with the polish and overall fun of generations and colors. Sonic just needs a proper team working on it with quality at the focus for gaining profit as opposed to hasted development of its biggest flops.
OK to be fair Sonic Heroes wasn't THAT bad, but it wasn't amazing either
Sonic 3D Blast wasn't bad either, at least on it's own merits.
Oh yeah, for a second there I forgot I'm the one person on the whole internet who liked shadow the hedgehog.
