• University U-turn over plans to mark International Men's Day following protests
THE University of York has scrapped plans to mark International Men's Day on Thursday, following protests by students, staff and former students. Scores have signed an open letter slating comments made by Dr Adrian Lee, of the equality and diversity committee, in promoting the day. ... It (the open later) said Men's Day did not 'seek a dialogue' on issues with women’s equality campaigns or initiatives, and nor did it acknowledge that the 'patriarchal structures which underpin society are inimical to both male and female advancement and well-being, or that the achievements of men are celebrated and disproportionately highlighted as a matter of course.' The university said in a statement that it was sorry the matter had 'caused unhappiness' for some members of the university community, who felt that the statement was inappropriate and should never have been issued. "The intention was to draw attention to some of the issues men tell us they encounter and to follow this up by highlighting in particular the availability of mental health and welfare support which we know men are sometimes reluctant to access," it said. "The Equality and Diversity Committee is clear that the main focus of gender equality work should continue to be on the inequalities faced by women, and in particular the under-representation of women in the professoriate and senior management."
http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/14035019.University_U_turn_over_plans_to_mark_International_Men_s_Day_following_protests/
what is with all the university protests
It's alright, us men get to celebrate international suicide prevention day. One of the pressing issues that I am willing to bet were meant to be addressed in this mens day that they were so eager to shoot down.
"The Equality and Diversity Committee is clear that the main focus of gender equality work should continue to be on the inequalities faced by women, and in particular the under-representation of women in the professoriate and senior management."
Totally valid reason for completely disregarding mens mental health & welfare support. Are these "protestors" delusional? Do they not see the complete irony of this.
The Equality and Diversity Committee
What a huge piece of irony here.
We don't need an international men's day and we don't need an international women's day
We don't need an international men's day and we don't need an international women's day
We don't need a lot of things but it's still nice to have them.
We don't need an international men's day and we don't need an international women's day
Then they get called out for sexism.
Then they get called out for sexism.
It's already sexists, and they won't acknowlegde it. From what i can gather from all this shit is that if you're a white male, you're oppressing everything no matter what. Which is bullshit imo.
It already has, have you been on some parts of tumblr or some really left colleges
Tumblr is irrelevant, it's like complaining about racism on certain reddit subs. As for colleges, it's starting and I hope it doesn't spread.

this is the most backwards ass stuff going on yes historically women/non white men have been attacked based on race or gender, but in this day and age, if there is a day to help bring awareness to issues men have (see: the several types of cancer that affect primarily men, for instance like breast cancer for women(which affects men too, just less often)) but everyone is ok if us having awareness for women(which I am 100% ok with by the way, just not in this case!), how are you not pushing what everyone fought so hard to push away from in the past trying to grant everyone equal rights and liberties if you're going to be sexist against men? Same thing can be said the other way around with men against women, the line is not visible and there is way too much fragmentation going on.
Most "International <this bullshit> Day"s can be made up on the spot don't worry. Just write "Happy International Woman's day" on facebook and it'll be shared for years with everybody thinking it's that day. Today is apparently international premature baby day on my facebook wow social media
Nice to see my university making themselves look stupid. The women's officer here is a fucking nutter too and should have been sacked last year but held her position by some miracle.

It's 2015 people, come on.

As far as I'm concerned everybody involved in making the decision to continue to "focus mainly on women's inequalities" is sexist and only looking out for themselves. You can hide behind the veil of equality all you want but when you deny the opposite gender its own equality for real issues then you're simply a sexist asshole yourself. Equality means looking out for everybody. Not pandering to your own stupid fucking political agenda. Universities shouldn't allow committees like this.
University "inequality" stuff is starting to really get out of hand. Just last week, a student government voted against having a campus-wide moment of silence every September 11 because it would "increase Islamaphobic feelings."
Or maybe she's holding her position because a majority of people legitimately believe what she's saying. It's 2015 people, come on.
She rather unprofessionally organised a political march which caught a humungous amount of backlash when she began banning any people from her 'democracy now' group for having the slightest of disagreements, even if they were well said and polite. I stated that I was of a similar political mindset as her but disagreed with her banning anyone who spoke up in a group about democracy, and I got banned :v: she kept saying that she was organising the march outside of her capacity as women's officer, but it still gave her pretty damn PR from even people who agreed with her just because of her immature attitude. There was a petition for a vote of no confidence against her, but it never went through.
Watch as it turns into white male hate soon enough if this PC bullshit keeps going on.
Modern feminism already establishes men as the patriarchal oppressor. No wonder people that care about equality are jumping ship.
Modern feminism already establishes men as the patriarchal oppressor. You can say vocal minority all you like but it's starting to turn over into a minority with a lot of power.

"more women in stem fields! oh, nobody cares about men in teaching or healthcare, men don't want to do that stuff anyways"

On the topic of education, no one cares that more women finish universities than men do. (depression and suicide rates probably contribute to that too) but no one gives a damn about this. Women must be treated as preferred sex these days. It's a shame MRA is a joke though.
Can feminism even be called an equality movement when it's so unequal toward a gender?
As we've seen before on FP many times before, mens issues don't exist or are somehow entirely the fault of men. Its a very toxic movement at this point.
As we've seen before on FP many times before, mens issues don't exist or are somehow entirely the fault of men. Its a very toxic movement at this point.
Don't bother pointing this out, people are just going to use a "no true scotsman" to defend their ideology.
what is with all the university protests
I'd like to see how many people are doing it to get out of class
I'd like to see how many people are doing it to get out of class
I doubt it, Tuition at some of the colleges these protests are taking place at nearly bridge $50,000/yr *cough yale cough*, I wouldn't skip a class for anything if I was spending that much money to be there.
