Until Microsoft pulls the patch -- or acknowledges the problem -- I advise against installing it.
Does this affect Windows 7 or 8 or both? Because if its 7 or both, the IT department forces you to install updates on the school laptops so this is fucking beautiful
It's probably a good thing that I don't let Windows automatically install updates anymore. It automatically downloads the updates, but I choose when to install them. I disabled this particular patch just in case. It's not even because of paranoia that Microsoft will screw up. I just had a couple too many instances where I was playing a game in fullscreen and the little "Windows will automatically restart in..." thingy never showed. And I only realized how long it had been since I'd saved after it was too late.
Does this affect Windows 7 or 8 or both?
Does this affect Windows 7 or 8 or both? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2803821 Edit: and Windows RT, Vista and XP.
Bah, i havn't updated windows 8 in ages, because when i do i get a black screen.
Windows 7 is one of the OS's that gets this update.
Wonderful!
Don't worry guys, it just breaks windows media player. Yeah okay it also breaks adobe premiere, camtasia and movieplus x6.

Edit: This looks like a Remote Code Execution exploit no wonder it was patched fast I imagine they didn't have a lot of time to test and its not like they can test all 3rd party applications that used it. And they offer a perfectly good work around if you want to update and don't feel like replacing Wmvdecod.dll because of the reported issues.
And yet people say I'm dumb for not updating the instant they come out. Patches like this are the reason why I turn WU off entirely and only install updates that I need to install to fix a bug I'm having!
I've had this installed on my system since Wednesday, haven't noticed any issues with WMP or anything else. Guess I'm lucky.

Pretty fucking ridiculous
I don't think they do our IT department isn't that smart
And I assume you have vast knowledge of IT to make a comment like this
if you have a problem with the software on your laptop they wipe your whole computer clean instead of figuring out the solution,
This is actually an effective way to manage users all on the exact same image, if you have a good imaging solution this can be done in 5 minutes and is going to fix any issues software and if it doesn't its best to assume a hardware issue. it is a very fast way of resolving issues and I imagine in a school you are going to be overworked and underpaid
the tiniest of exposed cracks on the laptop they will take it in, send a chunky repair bill and not even give you a loan laptop. Pretty fucking ridiculous
Because proactively forcing people to take care of their laptops is a bad thing? how about you don't cause physical damage to equipment you don't actually own?
And yet people say I'm dumb for not updating the instant they come out. As for the update, the thread title makes it seem worse than it is. I thought it was a black screen update or something like that.
Wish I had seen this before I just updated.. This is what I installed: Thanks for the dumb btw.
I just turned off Windows 8 updates a while ago because for some reason it breaks my ATI Mobility drivers. I should have went for Ubuntu. Now if only valve sped things up and ported more games over already...
Because proactively forcing people to take care of their laptops is a bad thing? how about you don't cause physical damage to equipment you don't actually own?
When the laptops were being rolled out to Grade 9's in late 2011 and then they were in operation by 2012 in grade 10, you had to purchase a black satchel and carry your books + laptops, the strap later came in and said it was super absorbent and it wouldn't break First week in, the straps break causing laptops to be hurled down flights of stairs, on cement walkways, on carpet, you name it with cracked screens, dents and other shit because of it The IT department charges everyone about it until they fucking realize that it isn't the students fault then give out a complimentary free repair, but sometimes they still charge you Bags were later replaced anyway [editline]14th July 2013[/editline] Even today, laptops drop out of lockers or get dropped because of carelessness, but there's only like a small scratch or a broken fan vent and they go absolutely anal about it
So.. the people who installed the update are basically fucked?
I don't think they do our IT department isn't that smart if you have a problem with the software on your laptop they wipe your whole computer clean instead of figuring out the solution, and the tiniest of exposed cracks on the laptop they will take it in, send a chunky repair bill and not even give you a loan laptop. And if the problem still persists, there's something wrong with the hardware.
So.. the people who installed the update are basically fucked?
If you have any of the programs that this update supposedly fucks over. Is there a list of those programs, I saw some posted in this thread but Premiere still works for me.
The title, the bit of quote and the first half of the actual article makes it seem like it'll brick your system with endless BSODs or something.
MS13-057: Description of the security update for Windows Media Format Runtime 9 and 9.5 (wmvdmod.dll), and for Windows Media Player 11 and 12: July 9, 2013 This affects XP-8 and their server versions. All that happens is video gets cut off when a program uses those system files to play a video (or attempts to compile them via those files). If you use VLC or any other video player that does not use system files, you should be fine. Basically calm the fuck down.
Basically trying to create more hate for Microsoft when there really isn't a problem

Took me thirty seconds to uninstall the update. [t]http://i.imgur.com/AJZs1WH.jpg[/t]
So that's why Dust was doing that. Edit:
Took me thirty seconds to uninstall the update.
Mind giving us a pointer?

So that's why my WMP wasn't working I take it this will be fixed soon?
So that's why my WMP wasn't working I take it this will be fixed soon?
uninstall it and it will be fixed now
is this why all the youtube videos on my win8 machine have been extremely choppy after the update?
