And from among its episodes, The Germans, in which hotelier Basil Fawlty clashes with visiting German tourists, is one of its most-loved. In the scene, a hotel regular, the elderly Major Gowen (Ballard Berkeley), relates a conversation in which he corrected someone for using a particular racist slur, by suggesting they use another, equally racist, slur. In the context of the episode, the line is clearly intended to mock the old-school British upper class for their inherent racism. In that sense, the joke is on Major Gowen, as it were, and not aimed at racial minorities. In a curious twist, though, other culturally insensitive jokes in the episode - such as Basil Fawlty goose-stepping in front of the German tourists, saying ''sieg heil'' while using a finger to simulate the moustache of German dictator Adolf Hitler and referring to a German tourist as ''a stupid Kraut'' - were not cut. Fawlty Towers has previously screened in Australia on ABC1, Foxtel's UKTV and Comedy Channel and on Seven and the digital channel 7Two. It is not presently licensed to any TV broadcasters, but it is available via the video-on-demand service Quickflix and on DVD. It was done with the blessing of John Cleese. If it was absolutely fucking integral to the comedy to keep the racial slurs I'm sure he wold have said no
If I remember right the words were nigger and coon. And it was on at 7:30. I'd say that's ok?
Well, it's not like the BBC have ever been known for smart decisions bound in common sense...
Aren't BBC exempt from following normal TV guidelines, cause they're government owned?
It was done with the blessing of John Cleese. If it was absolutely fucking integral to the comedy to keep the racial slurs I'm sure he wold have said no
I'd say the joke was ruined by having it censored since that basically was the bloody joke.
Of course not, they're held up to a higher standard if anything. The watershed is 9pm here. People don't expect to hear the word nigger when they're watching TV with their kids at 7:30. It has nothing to do with overly sensitive.
Uhh... No? Please no?
Why has this decision been made after the best part of 40 years?
Why has this decision been made after the best part of 40 years?
Because these days everyone is scared shitless of offended people and having them send angry letters or some shit.
i am so glad i have the original of this on DVD.
Because these days everyone is scared shitless of offended people and having them send angry letters or some shit.
I bet if the joke was "pasty white nerds who kill because of video games" you wouldn't have any issues with the censoring
This is what they cut out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=sbXAbZ28_0k#t=34s What this video misses is that in the next 10 seconds the word bastard is used (which was also cut out). You think it's suitable for 7:30?

it's prime time of course it'll be censored. Kids don't need to hear that
Could be worse. Could have edited it down like they do shows on GOLD. Hell there no-one is safe... Not even 'The Good Life'...
Because these days everyone is scared shitless of offended people and having them send angry letters or some shit.
obviously you dont know anything about the BBC, the BBC is far less likely to censor these days than whatever days you were thinking of
This is so bad I think Mary Whitehouse will be spinning in her grave
of course not, but do you guys have any television ratings because last time i read you guys don't
We have a watershed at 9pm, as was said earlier. Programmes should be child suitable for most channels before 9pm, but after that they can go and show whatever they want. I think that the watershed is earlier for some channels, though, but they're typically subscription ones on sky or freeview.
Stupid kids ruin everything, I hate them.
of course not, but do you guys have any television ratings because last time i read you guys don't
We don't have ratings as such. It's pretty much no swearing or sex before the watershed.. then anything goes after that.. apart from erections and inside vaginas (unless part of a medical program). (You can't show erections or penetration in porn on TV at any time - even on pay per view channels) There was a time when you couldn't say mother fucker at any time - but I think that's OK now.
This is utterly pathetic. This sort over oversensitive bullshit only promotes people throwing a shit fit over stupid, primary school name-calling crap. People ought to grow up
If it was only cut from the broadcast version, which is what I can make out from the article, I don't really see a problem with this as long as they don't edit the DVD release.
Why has this decision been made after the best part of 40 years?
The times have changed. People will get offended by the stupidest things, networks, corporations, and basically everyone is afraid of offending people and the resulting angry letters/boycotts/lawsuits, so they sanitize everything to stay as PC as possible.
Hey I once sat through an episode of "The only way is essex" That was insulting! Fawlty towers is awesome,BBC should just show it after the watershed and then when people complain then its tough shit!
Stupid kids ruin everything, I hate them.
What were you born a adult or something?
This is utterly pathetic. This sort over oversensitive bullshit only promotes people throwing a shit fit over stupid, primary school name-calling crap. People ought to grow up
well no, I'd expect any program shown before the watershed to bleep out swearing, it''s just responsible
What were you born a adult or something?
Yes.
If I remember right the words were nigger and coon. And it was on at 7:30. I'd say that's ok?
Reported for racism. Some mod ban this guy, please.
