One Stunning Stat Shows Just How Bad Worldwide Poverty Has Become
44 replies, posted
The world's 85 richest people have as much wealth as the world's 3.5 billion poorest.
This statistic was recently released in United Nations report that uses Oxfam figures. It's also a huge wake-up call for anyone who doesn't consider income inequality a major issue in global politics.
The Human Development Report goes deeper, saying that 1.2 billion people live on less than $1.25 a day, and 1.5 billion people live in "multidimensional poverty," a measure that takes income into account, but also includes factors like health, education and standards of living.

85 people sure must be happy then.
people still won't care
off-topic: why does every article always have clickbait titles now
it seems like it's trivializing the actual news just so the publisher can get ad revenue
which is disgusting

I thought you thought that I was talking about the FP thread title. jeez golly move on i'm confused
title is misleading, worldwide poverty has actually been declining
http://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2013/04/17/remarkable-declines-in-global-poverty-but-major-challenges-remain
i think the op means "inequality", which of course is a big problem but poverty has massively declined in the past few decades

it's missing the dinosaur
I think everyone already knows this, the whole "1%" movement and all. It's pointless getting upset about it.. These people run the show behind the scenes whether we like it or not.
It's partially why I respect the idea of communism, that is if I understand it correctly.

This is a terrible attitude which will get us nowhere, you're part of the problem.
This whole, "thats the way it is, and i'm powerless!", it's frankly incredibly annoying and passive.
Not saying I'm out there changing the world, but don't give up on the first step.
Well the bill n Linda gates foundation did say they were fighting and before all the wars in Africa the middle east, and Eurasia broke out they were saying they would have poverty of people below 1$ daily eliminated by like 2020 but seeing the huge humanitarian crisises out there today I think their estimation is off

It's the truth. As you get older you start to realize there's jack shit you can really do. Capitalism just doesn't seem to work without creating massive inequality and exploitation somewhere along the line.
If someone has an actual plan I'd like to hear it though. If we have any chance at all of collectively changing things it'll probably be with the power of the Internet.

Indeed. There is always someone being exploited or getting a raw deal somewhere. It's what happens when competition is engaged in for the sake of it and everywhere wants to cheap out on labour and raw materials, etc. as a result.
I think you're right in your implication that change is something that needs to be implemented collectively. The 'how' of the matter is pretty unclear though... I mean yes the internet gives the average person far better access to information than they used to be able to have but I'm not sure that just that is enough to change things for the better. People need to organise and demonstrate and actually begin to implement or push for solutions somehow.

You yourself say you're not out there changing the world either, and since positive thinking without action does jack shit you're not in any position to moralize. People who get self-righteous without actually doing anything aren't any better than those who accept the status quo.
Tbh as much as all of us first worlders like to complain about the 1%, we're still basically in the top 10% of the world. 50% of the world makes below $2.50 a day, which is 20 minutes at a minimum wage job in the US, so it kinda rings hollow to yell about the evil 1% when we're all doing the same things from someone else's perspective

Shhhhh you tool! You are undermining the anti capitalist efforts with your reactionary attitude!
Jokes (or not) aside...what you say is true.
And I fucking hate all those fucking marxist assholes that say "No, the worker is being more exploited and countries like norway and sweden are rich because their capitalists exploit other countries workers".
Poverty is declining, people are earning more in average and quality of life is expanding and increasing for everbody. Fuck off you marxist asshole.
if I was in the top 85, man, what the hell would I even do with all that dosh?

People earning more on average doesn't mean exploitation is a thing of the past. The joy of averages, one person earning a fucking ton can offset loads of people earning relatively little. Averages by themselves are only good as rough indicators, you need other statistical methods to actually say anything for certain (standard deviation of the average would be really helpful).

The cost of living in the US and other first world nations is far higher than that in the nations where people get below $2.50 a day so a lot of us still end up in the shit anyway. It's a different smelling shit but it's still a shit.

It was implied that I will take the action I can, but that I'm not in this very moment. Sorry for not being clear enough, but hey, you can shit all over it all you want :v:
Currently acting or not, I'd rather have someone willing to try rather than some defeatist who doesn't even begin to think about an attempt.
Not that justifications on an internet forum actually mean jack shit though :v:

Newspapers don't sell so good no more
For some outlets, especially those who have been force or have chosen to exist purely online, ad revenue is their only source of income.
It's annoying but I don't blame them for doing what they have to do in order to keep posting.
Whilst we may look at this way, we are still living in the best age we have known so far.
Never have less people been relatively poor. The 85 richest people have incomes that for some of them go over GDP of african countries so of course they will have more money.
Alot can still be improved though. Hopefully we will see more equality over the coming century.
ayy

Have you not seen the news at all in the last 20 years?

Yeah Valianttttt, that is too often overlooked. Things are definitely better than they used to be although we could be a lot worse off if we happened to have been born by chance elsewhere in the world. There is much to be positive about and, while things still aren't as good as they could be, they're much better relatively than they have been.
