Canadian Gov't drops all pretense and actually makes immigrants second-class citizens
Last Friday, part of Bill C-24 went into effect, officially creating a two-tier citizenship system...
Under this law, the only Canadians who can never lose their citizenship are those born in Canada who do not have another nationality (and are not eligible to apply for another nationality). No matter what crimes they may be accused of, these first-class citizens can never have their citizenship taken away.
On the other hand, Canadians with another nationality (and those who are eligible to obtain another nationality) now have second-class status, even if they were born in Canada: under Bill C-24, their citizenship can be stripped.
Sorry if the formatting is off, I'm posting this from my phone.
This is so fucked up. Essentially this sets a precedent for the government deporting people without trial, even if they were born in Canada and have no real connection to the country the government deports them to.
It's really unsettling for me, as my partner wasn't born here, but fled from Ukraine in the 90s when folks in his hometown started hurting Jews. He's been a citizen for years but under this law if he did or said something disagreeable they could strip his citizenship and basically exile him. Furthermore he's trans and his experience would be likely worse than most.
It's not like I expect myself or my loved ones to be accused of supporting terrorism, but the fact that they could be with little to no chance of appeal is frightening and utterly beyond reason.
Wow I thought Canada was the last sane country on this planet.
Damn.
i'm a retard
This is like the patriot act almost: In that it harms the citizens way more than it will ever harm ISIS. I mean, I assume ISIS is the bullshit reason they gave to pass this.
With so many people on the planet, it's a wonder this didn't happen sooner. Other civilized countries will likely follow in its wake. The one thing that humanity as a whole has refused to even look at except in cases of extreme crisis, such as mainland China, is population control.
I honestly fear that we're on the verge of realizing that human lives are nearly worthless now - there's simply too many people to maintain a humanitarian approach in nearly all aspects of government.
overpopulation isn't why they're doing this
they're doing this because they're evil politicians that care about conservative vote pandering more than humanity
This seems terrible. I planned on moving to Toronto when I finished grad school.

Yeah, population control is likely the last reason this is being done. Canada is ranked 230th for population density out of 244.

This is more because Canada has had to deal with Omar Khadr after his Foreign Jihadist shenanigans, not because of population control.

That and Foreign fighting Jihadist shit in general. This is in reaction to things like Omar Khadr and the now returning foreign fighters that's starting to happen in places like Europe.
I misspoke, for some reason I snapped to thinking locally when I read about the policy - I agree, Canada isn't overpopulated. Sorry for the half-formed thought.

If there's any silver lining to this it's that it will likely cost the CPC more votes in October, and whatever party takes over could remove it to pander to immigrant voters. But that's a huge maybe. I'd still say to go for it - I hate cities and I still think Toronto/Hogtown/T-Dot/Little York/Canada's New York/the place that people think is the capital but isn't/Hollywood North is a decent place to live.

The Immigrant vote in Immigrant heavy places like Ontario is probably going Blue or vote splitting with the NDP. In Ontario, it's not staying near full Liberal like it is at the moment. The Immigrant vote at the moment is pissed at Wynne for having Ben Levin, the recently convicted pedophile write up a sex ed plan that is borderline grooming.
Fucking hell. Next thing we'll be giving immigrants different water fountains, apart from this time it will be to 'protect the sovereign rights of native-born citizens' or some shit.
[editline]Fake edit lol[/editline]
To be fair, in this country, our Home Secretary can actually revoke people's citizenships by herself.
I like to think most of Canada is still sane, but the conservative government is right fucked. The current government is just brazen in their stupidity and their lack of care for Canada's reputation and well-being.
I sincerely hope they don't get another term in office. I'd vote for an american style limit to terms in office purely to get Harper out, the ass.
What the actual fuck. Up to a certain point I can see the logic behind doing this for people who came there at some point in their life and applied for citizenship (NOTE I'M NOT AGREEING WITH IT), but doing this to people who were born there and have a dual citizenship because of factors completely out of their control? The fuck is this?
Shit don't start telling our republican overlords about this, the ones in the southwest love these kinds of policies
Maybe 33% of Ameircan eighth grade students were right all along.
While I understand that what's Canadian government doing is really bad and I am not trying to defend it in any way, it's worth noting that you couldn't have dual citizenship alongside with Czech at all up until 2014. The law adopted last year allows it now. Back then, even if you were born in Czech Republic and went and accepted citizenship in another country, you automatically lost Czech citizenship. I actually only now found out they changed these rules and it's pretty cool.
[editline]5th June 2015[/editline]
Our constitution explicitly prohibits anybody to be stripped of their Czech citizenship against their will which they obtained in any way, for any reason.
So my friend who was born in Canada and has dual Canadian and Belgian citizenship but has lived here her entire life and never committed a crime can have her Canadian citizenship taken away just as easily as someone from Syria who just came to Canada a couple years ago and went off to join ISIS. That's actually retarded.
Canada has been slowly descending into a giant crock of shit since 2010. I'm almost ready to emigrate
I was born here but now my citizenship can be revoked.
I don't have a fallback citizenship.
Um Canada? why the hell did you turn on the dickhead switch?
Now where will Americans back up country be?
But really, the fuck Canada, I though you were cool.

We're cool.
It's the Conservative Government & Harper that are fuckwads.

How about first you vote in October and see what happens?
thanks harper!!!!!!!!
That is so, so fucking bad. I was planning to finish my studies here in Argentina and then move straight to Canada to get away from all this shit. RIP dream.
This seems terrible. I planned on moving to Toronto when I finished grad school.
Don't ever move to Toronto. You would be totally wasting your money
Everyone thinks as Canada as a really progressive great country, but since we've had our current PM in parliament (Especially since 2011) he has turned everything around and has steered us in an incredibly american direction, if he wins again we're going to be in a very bad place in four years.
Also our dollar isn't worth much right now and we have an 11.00 minimum wage (That will have the SHIT taxed out of it, for generally alright reasons except for GST) living in the city really sucks unless you have good employment, and even then its not a super exciting city.
The country is really cheap though, and jobs are generally abundant but I would still suggest everyone to stay away from Harper.

I cringe whenever someone does this shit. Is this really affecting your life to the point where you want to leave the country?
Sure it's a dick move from the Government's part but I seriously don't think it will change a single thing in your daily life, why would this make you emigrate, just because?
Meh. Harper is a dolt and his party are dolt enablers. Hes pulling this shit because he knows hes done for come election time.
Also hes doing it as our rather large immigrant population has been acting rather stupid these days. Which is only helping further his plans.

Higher taxes and money going to things that we don't get told about, a big example would be the contempt of parliament incident in 2011 concerning secret jet fighter programs and large-scale prisons. He's created a giant deficit and given all of his support to Alberta because its (was) his voter base, doesn't talk at all about what he's doing, and generally doesn't do anything at all, introduces shitty rights-infringing bills, and keeps outdated and much disagreed on drug laws. We just need a new PM that knows/cares about what he's doing.
