• Russia and the IOC Agree: Don’t Be Openly Gay at the Olympics
On Monday, the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed what other Russian officials have been saying for weeks: Openly gay people attending the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, including athletes, will be arrested under the country’s draconian new anti-gay law. That law, you might recall, prohibits “homosexual propaganda” and is designed to discourage any kind of support for gay rights or even gay people. The International Olympic Committee’s response to gay people? We mean it: Stay in the closet.
http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2013/08/13/russia_and_the_ioc_agree_athletes_and_spectators_shouldn_t_be_openly_gay.html Other information: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jamie-mcgonnigal/international-olympic-committee-russia-gay-athletes_b_3744891.html http://news.msn.com/world/ioc-gay-protests-wont-be-tolerated-at-olympics Well, I guess we can go ahead and assume the following: 1) The games will be held in Sochi 2) Some countries might boycott the games (The USA will NOT be boycotting) 3) Russia gets a gold medal in bigotry: In other news, the medal above has meteorite pieces in it!
As much as I think Russia is being terrible, boycotting the Olympics will crush the spirits of all those who have trained for their entire lives, whether they are gay or not. If I were gay, and was going to be in the games, I would obviously feel terrible that I couldn't be open about my sexuality, but still concentrate on my athletic performance and be the best athlete I can, for all the countries out there who are more open-minded

In this day and age ... why??
Russia, please. Just stop.... Stay out of people's sexual lives....
Fuck this the Athletes should be boycotting from the inside, and then the exterior boycotters, and then the crowd. But then again people would probably end up dead, or in prison. On a side note, the russians have a nice design going there.
Well thankfully the winter olympics is a regular occurance, they can go to the fucking next one.
every 4 years? That's a long time in terms of physical training
Really, IOC? Blatant bigotry and discrimination and instead of doing the right thing you're saying "just don't show yourself as gay"?
So might being arrested for your sexuality.
You're not getting his reasoning. These athletes may prefer to hide their sexuality for a few weeks and be able to compete te best they can for something they have trained their whole lives for. If they miss this Olympics, well they ever get another chance to compete as people are generally not in sport for very long. Is the situation good? Obviously not. But I'm willing to bet that many of these athletes would rather compete in this country than miss potentially their only chance to go to the Olympics.
In this day and age ... why??
The IOC and Russia have a contract and there is nothing that the IOC can do to break it and prevent the games from being hosted in Sochi. As I said in another thread, Fundamental Principal 6 of the Olympic Charter does not specifically protect sexuality or gender identity and the IOC is in a election cycle so they don't want to deal with it now. Its horribly stupid but this also ruins Russia's chances of hosting the olympics again for a damn long time.
What if they win gold medals and then be openly gay
I really hope the olympics get boycotted a lot
They could just draw a lottery for a new location that already has the facilities to host the Winter Olympics, but I guess that's too rash for the IOC. but they have that contract too, discriminating and arresting people for being Homosexual just isn't that important I guess.
What if they win gold medals and then be openly gay
Only the IOC can strip medals. In all likelyhood they wont make a big deal of it unless they are really trying to break the law. It isnt a simple thing of moving it.
every 4 years? That's a long time in terms of physical training
Cool, so they'll be super trained for the next one.
Cool, so they'll be super trained for the next one.
if it only worked that way
Sad day for basic human rights. :(
I can't help but expect a massive fuckup to occur during the event. Whether it's a protest devolving into a riot, random people getting arrested and beaten to an inch of their lives or so forth. This really isn't something the IOC can just ignore and expect nothing to come out of it.
"Hey, don't be an emotional, living, thinking person. Especially don't try to be the person that you're most comfortable with, just be some lifeless robot that wins medals for your country" - IOC
The IOC can go fuck itself.
Well thankfully the winter olympics is a regular occurance, they can go to the fucking next one.
No, they can't. 4 years is a long time in sports, by then pretty much anyone over 22 will be passed by and won't have a fucking chance. This is especially an issue for all the new disciplines and events this year, who haven't even had the chance to compete in the Olympics beforehand. These olympics are going to be a massive clusterfuck, between the political controversy and last year at the test events they barely even had enough snow.
Well thankfully the winter olympics is a regular occurance, they can go to the fucking next one.
No they can't they literally cannot Athletes have a very short shelf life and thats their fucking careers riding on it, this isnt some petty hobby they have literally trained their whole lives to make these events. So no, its not as simple as "lol they can just wait"
in 4 years time most of these athletes won't be at their prime age
Fuck IOC.
Fuck Russia.
ftfy
Was anyone even openly gay at the olympics to begin with ? It's like Russia has never even bothered watching olympics or athletics at all and just pictures homosexual athletes as flamboyant rainbow farting sissymen.
I am still firmly against any country boycotting the games. The amount of work the athletes put into training for the Olympics is staggering. For almost all of them, it is a full time job. To be denied the choice to participate I think is awful. That being said, I am all for athletes who boycott the game by their own choice: individually.

Athletes are not government property and the only people they have to respond to when making a decision are their entourage and possibly their sponsors.

In such a case, the NOC, the OCOG, the host city, the country of the host city and all their governmental or other authorities, or any other party, whether at any city, local, state, provincial, other regional or national level, shall have no claim for any form of compensation against the IOC.
And although fundamental provision 6 doesn't specifically ban discrimination on grounds of sexuality, the IOC could at least try to argue it's included under 'or otherwise'
Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement.
But they won't
All y'all athletes even if you straight say you're gay see if Russia arrests every single one of you
