Hallé Ousmani Cissé told the Guardian that al-Qaida-allied fighters on Saturday torched two buildings that held the manuscripts, some of which dated back to the 13th century. They also burned down the town hall, the governor's office and an MP's residence, and shot dead a man who was celebrating the arrival of the French military.
UPDATE: Timbuktu now under full coalition control
man, fuck these guys
Fucking assholes!
This is why I keep backups of my files.
So much history that no one will ever know again...
wow ok that's not cool at all
We have a name for this in America, it's called being a sore loser.
WHY?
Well. At least it wasn't like the burning of the Alexandrian library.
Why are so many priceless artifacts so easy to get to there? Like if they are so priceless why keep them there?
Why are so many priceless artifacts so easy to get to there? Like if they are so priceless why keep them there?
Timbuktu is kind of like old as shit.
Bastards give bad rep to Islam.
So much history that no one will ever know again...
It does suck, but surely the information has been cataloged by now? I doubt the information on the manuscripts was entirely lost, though the physical item is surely gone.
Timbuktu is kind of like old as shit.
I mean you'd think someone at some point, the UN or somebody would place these things in a safe place.
Bastards give bad rep to Islam.
Sad really. I wouldn't be surprised if many of these manuscripts were written by Muslims in the past.
Sad really. I wouldn't be surprised if many of these manuscripts were written by Muslims in the past.
Sufis I presume. The Ansar Dine militants hate them and have been burning all of their ancient stuff

That is quite impressive
so wtf did france join like a week ago and now they're immediately winning? That is quite impressive
Despite world war 2 becoming the stock "haha France" thing, the French fight like lions. Remember this is the country that single-handedly defeated armies time and time again during 20 perpetual years of war against every single other European country and Russia, until Moscow happened.
So much history that no one will ever know again...
That is why militants do this - it is like a pathetic scramble to keep their power. They know if they can prevent people from becoming educated they can control them better. More educated = less power they have over that person. Which in reality it is their own ignorance which is keeping them and their people from prospering.
so wtf did france join like a week ago and now they're immediately winning? That is quite impressive
Um, weren't they the ones that started the whole Mali intervention thing?
Um, weren't they the ones that started the whole Mali intervention thing?
So?
Yeah with the exception of World War II and the colonial engagements post-war, the French have a stellar record in major wars.
If Napoleon hadn't become such a fat idiot in his later years he might actually have won in Russia.
If Napoleon hadn't become such a fat idiot in his later years he might actually have won in Russia.
Plus their stunning turn around during the Hundred Years War. Admittedly, that was just because Duke Burgundy was a fickle fuck who jumped ship on the dual monarchy, but they still won.
So much history that no one will ever know again...
Not all of them, I assume at least some of them are backed up or copied
Timbuktu is like..the Oxford of the Muslim world in ancient times. These fuckers claim to be enforcing a form of Islamic law and they torch a library containing priceless manuscripts that some may have once belonged to Muslim scholars.
Not all of them, I assume at least some of them are backed up or copied
I can assure you that in old libraries and universities, the amount of books is so overwhelming that nobody can be assed to copy them all over in a short timespan. When Leuven university (founded in 1425) was burnt down in 1914, priceless amounts of information disappeared. Now imagine that, but with an even older library, in a country where administration isn't exactly a high priority and technology is somewhat lagging behind most of the time.
Sufis I presume. The Ansar Dine militants hate them and have been burning all of their ancient stuff
Not necessarily, the libraries of Timbuktu have everything from Islamic to medieval scientific texts so they likely lost a vast section of many different subjects which would have been written by so many different people. Chances are they probably have copies of certain earlier non-Sufi Arab-written texts among others
