Norway is distancing itself from its Christian past. The Storting -- the country's Parliament -- will amend the constitution so that the state no longer has an official religion, ending the 1,000-year tradition of the Church of Norway.
A parliamentary committee report presented Tuesday contains a unanimous recommendation to have the state permanently separate from the church.
All 169 members of the seven parties in Parliament, including 10 representatives from the Christian Democratic Party and 30 from the Conservative Party, are said to be behind the move, according to a report from TV2.
The government will no longer have a minister of churches, and the state will no longer be responsible for the appointment of bishops and deans.
Instead, Norway will treat all religions and philosophies equally.
"The state will no longer engage in religious activities, but support the Norwegian church, national church and other religious and belief communities in line with it," reports NRK.
The Church of Norway is evangelical Lutheran and says on its website around 86% of the population are baptized members.
The amendments are expected to be formally passed Monday.
Kind of sad to see 1000 years of tradition to disappear, but if it was a burden on parliament I see why.
It's hilarious how the US is "secular" and Norway was Christian, but the US was 1000 x more Christian then Norway's ever been these last two centuries.
Wow, so Norway's pretty much the best country on the planet then, no excuses?

I mean it already was, but now it's even better.
I hope we will go back someday to the old Norse religion..

Yeah I mean sure it's exactly as crazy and illogical as the current day religions, but at least they knew how to make their stories entertaining.
This is good. There should always be a nice wall between religion and state.
While I strongly agree with this action, I didn't have much problems with it to begin with. Barely even affected me.

Wow what the hell, how where you thinking the same thing I was thinking?
I don't really understand his post at all.
Wish they did that in Finland too. State religion is ass. Although the majority of the people are a part of the church only a very small percentage visit the church apart from weddings and funerals, religion is not part of their lives in any way. I don't know a single person below the age of 50 who prays.
What is so "winner" about this exactly. I'm all for secularism but...

Wow.

I'd imagine it helps keep religion out of politics so the country's leaders can make more informed decisions for its people.
Not a major breakthrough due to us taking it not so seriously with a "official religion". We did not forbid other churches for other religions.
EDIT:
However I believe it will keep church out of schools, which is pretty good.

i cant think of a single religious tradition that should be going on for any number of years ever so no it's not sad

Religion hasn't factored into Scandinavian politics in a long time, it's just that we have state-religion, meaning that we had an official church and stuff. Nothing more than tradition and culture.
does this mean there will be no christmas holiday?
Tomorrow England

Having an official state religion is essentially saying that one belief better than another.

Oh come on, the church was practically what christmas is now, no one takes it seriously and just keeps it around because hell it's tradition.

England barely gives a shit about religion. Not like it'd make a difference anyway.
