https://heatst.com/culture-wars/cbs-news-assailed-for-distorted-and-biased-report-on-chicago-facebook-beating/
The CBS News radio report is being criticized for its contorted wording which seemed to imply heavily — without saying so directly — that the victim was black and his assailants where white. In fact, of course, it was the other way around. The report can be listened to here: “The viral video of a beating and knife attack in Chicago suggests the assault had racial overtones. CBS’s Dean Reynolds tells us the victim is described as a mentally challenged teenager. In the video he is choked and repeatedly called the n-word. His clothes are slashed and he is terrorized with a knife. His alleged captors repeatedly reference Donald Trump.” While the report is technically “correct,” listeners unfamiliar with the story could not be blamed for having the impression that the attackers are Donald Trump supporters abusing a black man for his ethnicity. The script is deceptive in its omission of pertinent details.
The source is a very right-wing leaning site but right now it's either that or Mark Dice. But you can listen to it yourself and verify: http://audio.cbsradionewsfeed.com/2017/01/05/08/Hourly-08.mp3 (start at 2:05)
Ah, media is simply wondrous, isn't it.
that is a beautifully disingenuous but technically correct description can't believe they had the balls to even try to do that, incredible
why has mainstream news gone to pure total shit can we call them fake news yet. i can't trust any site anymore at this rate.
News in the States appears to be completely useless and actively misinforming people. At-least, most media sources. I'm glad that despite its own faults, we do have our own trustable news sources in Ireland.
Imagine if it wasn't such a publicized event. How many people would think it was the opposite of what happened. All because of some creative phrasing. Misleading journalism is an art form.
Reminds me of the time one of the major news groups showed a "live" video of a victim's family member calling for "peace" by only showing her saying "don't riot and break our stuff, we need it" when in fact the second half of her statement was her saying to go to the suburbs and break their shit instead v:v:v
Gotta keep the narrative going at no costs. Poor radio listeners, truly they are the color blind listeners.
why has mainstream news gone to pure total shit can we call them fake news yet. i can't trust any site anymore at this rate.
All news has a narrative to fill. All news is misleading. Simple solution: don't take everything from the news as truth. Absorb multiple sources, use your brain to form an opinion. Don't let yourself get too fired up because someone that gets paid millions to spoon feed you conservative/liberal engineered news stories tells you to. Anyone that gets paid as much as an actor to present the news is an actor.
Why is this allowed.
Reminds me of the time one of the major news groups showed a "live" video of a victim's family member calling for "peace" by only showing her saying "don't riot and break our stuff, we need it" when in fact the second half of her statement was her saying to go to the suburbs and break their shit instead v:v:v
That was CNN, the same news network that is now only trusted by 1/3rd of it's main viewers.
I have to wonder if news organisations destroying their credibility is actually improving their ratings, in a sort of twisted JC Penny Effect way where being moderate and honest just demolishes your value.

Is there any news network that is trustworthy?
Is there any news network that is trustworthy?
NPR hasn't done anything too horrible that I'm aware of.
I can see a reason to not broadcast calls for violence.
Sure, but don't broadcast half of someone's call for violence so that they look like a peaceful but distressed family member.
I have to wonder if news organisations destroying their credibility is actually improving their ratings, in a sort of twisted JC Penny Effect way where being moderate and honest just demolishes your value.
CNNs all day news feed showed marketing professionals that people get hard hearing about how terrible the world is. Fox News success feeding conservatives right leaning narratives made the others tune their narratives to other political ideologies. They really don't hate each other. They made loads of money playing the same game and staying in their lanes. They shuffle hosts (news actors who are paid 8 figures) to fit their narratives. Juan Williams goes to Fox News, Megyn Kelly goes to NBC. Red Rover, red Rover, send your liberals over. We have a mutual gap in narrative.
These days I wouldn't trust any organization that tries to apply meaning to current events. In my opinion, they should be reporting on events as they happened, and not add or distort using speculation.
I can see a reason to not broadcast calls for violence.
Oh come on, you seriously are going to defend that still even though CNN already had to apologize for it and include the whole clip?
I can see a reason to not broadcast calls for violence.
Oh for sure, the problem is more to do with trying to publish falsified and misleading news painting certain people as completely different than they are. If someone's trying to advocate a race war I'd at the very least not want to be tricked into thinking they were calling for peace, especially if I lived there and might be in the line of fire.

If this was being spinned as white on black, let alone actually being white on black, the entire country would be in uproar, media would be playing it 24/7, Obama would make an address saying that the victim could've been his son and other stupid shit. Then people start wondering why fucking abhorrent shit like white nationalism, Trump and the right gain traction. I dare say Trump may not be far off the mark when he says libel laws should be opened up on the media. He may say that because he is insecure but I say they should be held more accountable for what they release.

I don't even see their correction as accurate either.
NPR hasn't done anything too horrible that I'm aware of.
NPR's bias is very subtle. They're liberal, however they (mostly) do a good job at maintaining a balanced report on things. However, a lot of their interviews come with some really heavy slanted questions. Still good listens though, especially since I can listen to NPR in my car on my way to class or work.
Two threads YAY! Time to quote my reply from the other thread.
Oh you mean this video? Show me where it's mentioned that the torturers are white. https://youtu.be/Nv8Ab58-7WI?t=50 http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/chicago-assault-live-streamed-on-facebook-four-detained/ "CBS News Implies Facebook Live Torturers are WHITE - Victim is BLACK !!!  FAKE NEWS " Where did they imply such a thing.
Just FYI the video above was aired on CBS. So if you have eyes you can clearly see the victim is white and the torturers are black. Just saying the word nigger doesn't imply he's black.
can we call them fake news yet
Fake news is news that is completely fabricated. Not misleading, not biased, not politicized. Fake. Completely fake. Like "Obama Regime Orders FEMA Camps Ready For WW3" fake.
Just FYI the video above was aired on CBS. So if you have eyes you can clearly see the victim is white and the torturers are black. Just saying the word nigger doesn't imply he's black.
Well no, like someone else said CBS's description isn't technically wrong but you can see how people without a visual aid (remember, it was a radio broadcast) could get a vastly different illustration of events. I think it's telling that basically no other outlet has described the attack in anything like CBS News Radio

I'm guessing you didn't. He says it as clear as can be, that the victim was called the n-word multiple times, and the attackers made many references to Donald Trump. Not only that, but the sounds from the video in the background only give us screams and a black male's voice... now if you hadn't heard about this before, and based on that wording and the sound byte along with it, what would you think from that? [editline]8th January 2017[/editline]
Fake news is news that is completely fabricated. Not misleading, not biased, not politicized. Fake. Completely fake. Like "Obama Regime Orders FEMA Camps Ready For WW3" fake.
IMO, I'd refer to misleading news as fake news.
Yes but their careful description and lack of visual aid gives the heavy implication of white on black violence, changing the context of the story for listeners on the radio.
The careful description was from television broadcast news which made it abundantly clear who the attackers and victims were, it just makes for a super unfortunate radio broadcast. My post in the other thread
Aide's video from :47 to 1:42 matches the CBS broadcast from 2:18 to 3:05. I can't spot the time discrepancy but I think they cut some of the parts where they say smack him at around 1:02 in the video. Listening to them side by side, thats where they become incongruent but the reports are the same.
They also cut out a part about the attackers "replying to viewer comments" which explains the slight discrepancy in time between the two samples.
This is why I really do not trust mainstream media at all. It feels like so many media groups are focusing less on delivering actual news and focusing more on stirring as much controversy as possible and being intentionally divisive just for the sake of causing more drama and more "news" stories.
