I wonder what his ultimate plans are...
Interesting method to do this, has he ever said how much of these methods he's trying are his ideas or things ancient people did?

I intend to use the charcoal to produce hotter fires than I'm able to with wood alone. From my research, a natural draft furnace using wood (a kiln) can reach a maximum of 1400 c degrees whereas a natural draft furnace using charcoal can reach 1600 c degrees. Achieving high temperatures is necessary for changing material to obtain better technology (e.g. smelting ore into metal).
I still love the shit out of this channel.
If he starts smelting ore I'm gonna lose my shit.
This is a method that has been used for a very long time btw, and it is still in use in some parts of the world. Basically the point is to heat the wood in an oxygen-starved environment.
Nice to see him advance in technology, I hope he'll do "Primitive Technologies - AK-47" soon.

Can't wait for the "Nuclear Arsenal" episode.
i bet this guy is a pro at rust

Holy fucking shit im gonna crap myself if he manages to make some sort of a metal spearhead/axe/knife

I bet Garry takes notes from this guy when it comes to Rust updates.
The fire burned down the inside of the mound against the updraft. I reason that this is a better way to make charcoal as the rising flames have used up the oxygen and prevent the charcoal already made above them from burning while driving out even more volatiles
Does this part of the description mean that the flames that burnt down low, used up all the oxygen in the burning process so the charchoal above doesn't have the oxygen necessary to burn?

Yes I think, its wierdly explained.

A part of me wants him to do it, just to make anyone who's ever said, "You cannot make guns like how they are made in rust!!" shut up and go "wat"
He mentioned in the comments that he has already acquired iron ore, so get hyped.
Oh my fuck, hopefully he puts it to making some metal tools first. He could totally use a nice axe, knife, and a few other things just to easy up the workload regarding a few things.
You know, now that I think about it... I wonder if it would be possible for him to use the nearby river/waterfall to make a sawmill or grainmill. Maybe he could even build a small graintower for crushing plants that he gathers into pastes and the like.

I can't wait for him to start making walls and declare Sovereignty.
When's paper and water filters?
it's actually incredible watching one man advance through thousands of years of technology by himself
He said he WILL smelt the iron ore soon, the problem is the forge and bellows. He's tried like two furnace designs without bellows and the fire didn't get hot enough to melt the ore. Now I'm interested in how he'll make a bellows, I really doubt he will have access to tanned leather anytime soon.
I have tried suggesting to him that he should first hunt a pig or fish, and use it's intestines/stomach as a way to make a bellow. If he also manages to get the skin of a deceased animal, he could use that to make a bellow as well.
This reminds me of when my anthropology professor told us about how hard it is to make a spearhead because it's not something you can just pick up and do, someone has to teach you how to do it.
These techniques are old, but they are not easy by any means

From what i have seen he is using mostly furnaces made out of clay, he should use stone instead as stone can store heat much more efficiently than clay. Could be that he has stone but it has too thin layer of it.
This guy's whole channel is awesome. The lack of "Hey guys, so today basically what I thought we'd do today is blah blah blah" is so refreshing and I love just watching him do his work.
Also does anyone else love the sound of charcoal?
It amazes me that he has never got lyme disease or anything
like i wandered into a forest like once with everything tucked in and shut closed for like airsofting and got lyme disease immediately from a tick bite

He's got a great way of setting up himself and the camera and editing the footage in such a way that's sort of self-explanatory. His style is the epitome of 'show, don't tell', it's fantastic

Bad luck I guess? I've had a few ticks now and then but never contracted lyme disease.
we got to do this in ninth grade at school

I think this is the primary thing that sets his videos apart from countless others of its type.
Whenever I watch this guy I always think about how useful these techniques would be if we ever suffered a total collapse of civilization (and a technology setback).
It's no wonder that the evolution of early technology moved so insanely slow. Just imagine if you had to figure all this crap out, just by trial and error. if some dude really did stumble upon useful new techniques before he died at 30 and if he wasn't too busy with survival and that of his tribe and family alone, he would have to pass on his knowledge and hope someone would comprehend the concepts he tried to secure with no preservable written documents, that someone would care enough (who would have though for example charcoal would be important to smelt ore possibly hundreds of generations in the future) and that they wouldn't die as well. Then the knowledge might be preserved within the tribe, but tribes would come and go and all the technology would be lost eventually. It's amazing we got anywhere at all, but I guess in time, you'll always get somewhere eventually (if you give it enough millennia)
