They had this for invite on game's launch, but now apparently the invite system is gone and anyone can play D3 for free up to level 13 with some restrictions. You do have to "grab a game disc from a friend", so presumably you need to have a copy of the game installed on your computer to actually play it, even if you bnet account says you can play the starter edition (they don't just let you download it I assume, for whatever strange reason).
The demonically-besieged world of Sanctuary needs heroes. Now you can join in the apocalyptic battle for FREE via the all-new Diablo® III Starter Edition. Available exclusively via Battle.net®, the Starter Edition allows you to fight your way up to the Skeleton King boss in Act I, and advance all the way to level 13, without having to purchase a copy of Diablo III. You can get the FREE Starter Edition in any of the following ways: Log in to your existing Battle.net account at http://www.battle.net, and sign up for the Diablo III Starter Edition through the "Your Game Accounts" section. Create a new Battle.net account here, and the Diablo III Starter Edition license will be added to your account automatically. Grab the Diablo III game disc from a friend, install the game, and then log in with your Battle.net account. The Diablo III Starter Edition will be added to your account automatically. Note that certain game features are restricted on Starter Edition accounts. Any progress and achievements you earn while playing the Starter Edition will automatically carry over if you decide to upgrade to the full version of Diablo III, and the Starter Edition restrictions will be removed. For more information and a full list of restrictions, check out the Diablo III Starter Edition FAQ.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/6939568/
Yeah, no thanks.
still not worth it
What's with all these failing games going F2P?
What's with all these failing games going F2P?
The question you should be asking is why are they pushing out shit games
What's with all these failing games going F2P?
Was this some poor attempt at humor? Not saying the game doesn't suck, but playing up to level 13 is literally like an hour of gameplay. Hardly free to play.
What's with all these failing games going F2P?
Not really failing at all. They made all their money back and then some, but that doesn't necessarily make the game good.
The question you should be asking is why are they pushing out shit games
Indeed. Why are these companies pushing out shitty games?

I'm pumped for Path of Exile open beta. No point in really playing at the moment since everything is gonna get wiped anyway but since Diablo 3 left a hole in the market for a lot of players I hope PoE scoops those guys up. I Definitely like PoE over D3.
Are we saying Diablo 3 is bad because it's genuinely not a good game or are we still complaining about the drm?
Are we saying Diablo 3 is bad because it's genuinely not a good game or are we still complaining about the drm?
Bit of both I guess(?) I can see maybe if you never played D1 or D2 and you played D3 for the first time you might like it but as a fan of the series and the lore I feel pretty robbed by Blizzard.
The question you should be asking is why are they pushing out shit games
The game itself was pretty entertaining for the most part. I enjoyed playing it with my friends. It was just the shit DRM and RMAH that really fucked things up

The passive skill tree is really neat but the combat (99.99% of an action RPG) felt no where near as good.

Physics would be neat but I have a feeling its too far down the line to add those in.
So having a demo of a game means that it is failing? :v:
Are we saying Diablo 3 is bad because it's genuinely not a good game or are we still complaining about the drm?
I see a lot of people saying Diablo 3 is bad because the endgame is grindy. I think most of the bad responses have been from people who are too young or otherwise didn't play the genre but that's kinda what it's built on. I got to 60 with two characters and a mix of 20-40 with friends and might pick it later but for now I'm done with the game.
Diablo 3 is a good game, a very good game at that. Now, is it what you wanted? No. The DRM has its purpose and reasons and the gameplay for skills and attributes also have its purpose and reasons. I played for one month and I had a generally good time playing it with my friends and using the auction house to make lots of gold. The game ended being a grind fest for items and gold though so it is what Blizzard is best at doing. I just want to play Torchlight 2 now.
So having a demo of a game means that it is failing? :v:
If Blizzard announces it's doing anything it means they are failing.
If Blizzard announces it's doing anything it means they are failing.
BLIZZARD IS FINISHED
I just want to play Torchlight 2 now.
Ikr? "Released: Summer 2012" It's August 14th summer is basically over now.
"Grab the Diablo III game disc from a friend." I think they forgot you could download it https://us.battle.net/account/download/.
You are all fucking stupid, Blizzard planned to make free starter edition, normally it was only for people who had guest pass.
How is a demo bad? They can't even sell the gold so the AH is in no danger.
I still play Diablo 3 and I enjoy it. i must not be a true gamer.
You are all fucking stupid, Blizzard planned to make free starter edition, normally it was only for people who had guest pass.
So, where's that source for your claim?
Diablo 3 was aimed at the wrong player base to begin with.
So, where's that source for your claim?
http://diablo.incgamers.com/blog/comments/diablo-3-starter-edition-and-guest-passes-explained Every boxed copy came with a few guest passes.
What's the problem with this? People get pissy all the time for developers not making demos, this is just a demo. I don't know why you guys are on your high horses for this one
Diablo 3 was aimed at the wrong player base to begin with.
An interesting observation considering it's the fastest selling PC title ever.
