The Investigatory Powers Bill, which was all but passed into law this week, forces internet providers to keep a full list of Internet Connection Records (ICRs) for a year, and make them available to the government if it asks. Those ICRs effectively serve as a full list of every website that people have visited, not collecting which specific pages are visited or what's done on them but serving as a full list of every site that someone has visited and when.
And those same ICRs will be made available to a wide range of government bodies. Those include expected law enforcement organisations like the police, the military and the secret service – but also contain bodies like the Food Standards Agency, the Gambling Commission, council bodies and the Welsh Ambulance Services National Health Service Trust.

This is beyond retarded jesus fuck. The UK is literally turning into something out of 1984
I Can't believe i'm saying this again but UK needs take pointers from the NSA, they even thought this was too excessive.
why is the UK getting so fucked all of a sudden?
Gotta be able to stop them terrorists somehow.
why is the UK getting so fucked all of a sudden?
The power of fear is strong...
To elaborate, this is pointless. The NSA and even the Danish PET have shown that mass collection of private data rarely helps stop terrorist plots. Way I see it, and I might just be paranoid, but bear with me, is the government seizing power based on the fear of these terrorist attacks (and other crimes of course).

Conservative party government, currently run by a leader who was completely unelected as any of her competition pulled or stepped down so it defaulted to her. She thinks she can bypass parliament on any matters she wants, for example she was going to enact article 50 and take whatever deal without running it past anyone else first.
Really we should have had another election as the conservative party remarkably different to what it was only last year but little miss "brexit means brexit, nothing to hide nothing to fear" has decided that's not going to happen.
why is the UK getting so fucked all of a sudden?
Conservatives, opposition has crippled itself and if anything bad happens the gov can blame brexit or say "its for your own good"

Theresa May has been pushing mass surveillance for years as Home Secretary, now that she is PM she can basically push it through without any scrutiny
Who do they expect to foot the bill for all that storage?
Theresa May has been pushing mass surveillance for years as Home Secretary, now that she is PM she can basically push it through without any scrutiny
When I said this would happen when she was first a candidate for PM people to me "nah she was just doing her job, it's the PMs job to restrain the home secretary, she'll be fine".
Nevermind, I retract what I said before. Roll out those 1984 references lads, because May is bug fuck crazy
Who do they expect to foot the bill for all that storage?
Nobody who benefits from these new powers, I bet.
And people call me crazy
So how long do you reckon before they start going after VPN's? Six months?

Trying to analyse the data of mass collection is the pointless part, as the more data added, the harder it becomes. I believe this is aimed at having these records on hand for when they are needed.
Don't they need a warrant to access it?
Also 100% guarantee this will be hacked within the year. Once ID is needed for pornography blackmail will be easy peasy. Yay :I

I can maybe see the point for the FSA and the gambling commission to see this information if I stretch a little bit but I don't see any reason why the ambulance services should access my internet history.

They'll probably justify it as "Checking if they bought medication online/checked symptons online/looked for home remedies."
How else will the government be able to tell if you've watched any "unconventional" porn?
What actual use will the gambling commision get out of it, for instance. Statistics for analysis without consent which seems unethical or are they actually going to try and intervene with people who've spent more than x number of hours or whatever on gambling websites? Seems a little bit too invasive.
This started out as "we will stop the terrorists" and is very, very quickly heading towards "we will stop anything we deem inappropriate, e.g. porn, gambling, unhealthy eating, opinions we deem dangerous".
It's starting to feel like we are living in the bad ending of some cyberpunk rpg lmao
"Well, we wouldn't want to miss catching someone engaging in any sex acts that the overseers have deemed 'unconventional'... Better give her internet history a once over, officer."
UK is turning into a real big brother state isn't it.
Wonder when they're gonna start sending out cable companies under government order to install 'security' cameras in every room in your house.

I see it as an attack on the internet from the Conservatices, who know young people and the internet are their biggest threat in upcoming elections.

They don't need to, more debt, as long as they say things are fine their supporters will believe they are. If they really wanted though, they'll probably just cut mental healthcare for young people or some other things that's extremely important to the lives of people that don't vote for them.

To be honest, another election would give the PM an even bigger ability to bypass Parliament, it's pretty obvious that if there were another election the government would get a pretty big majority.

The thing I don't understand is why people are even afraid of terrorism. The threat presented by terrorists these days is much less severe than the IRA 30 years ago, and the chances of being killed in a terrorist attack are infinitesimal anyway.

Maybe the point is not to fight terrorism?
may makes thatcher look like a saint
They already do this, this is just to make it "legal".
They literally have the ability to perform "reverse-google" style searches where they can find anyone who searched for "X".
In other news: Hackers and blackmailers have never been happier. I wonder how much money you can make by selling internet history data.
Good thing the UK is going to leave the EU, though. Makes it easier for them to pass such bills.

ISIS, really. The masses are, frankly, idiots, and most don't bother doing any research on the subject themselves. So when the media and government tells them they're in danger of becoming targets of terrorism, they swallow it right up, and are ready to give up most of their basic human right to be "safe". It's just an illusion of danger, but most don't realise that.
Maybe the point is not to fight terrorism?
Not only, no, as I said. There are other crimes they would want to prevent, or need data to help solve (or as someone pointed out, wanting to prevent children from accessing certain parts of the internet, amongst other things), but I don't think it's entirely inaccurate to say that a large part of it is to fight terrorists and stop them before they can do anything.
