A Golden Meadow police officer, who stopped a 61-year-old woman for having overly tinted windows then pepper-sprayed her, has been fired.
Darren Charpentier, a two-year veteran of the force, was terminated following a meeting Wednesday attended by about 30 residents complaining about incidents involving the officer.
Police Chief Randy Chaisson says he had placed Charpentier on administrative leave earlier in the afternoon.
Jennifer Callais, who required medical treatment for heavy bruising and the effects of the pepper spray, said she was stopped by Charpentier twice in five days for the windows in her vehicle.
Callais' husband, Terry Callais, said the pickup was purchased secondhand three years ago and the windows were already tinted.
The woman told the Houma Courier about getting stopped by the officer.
"I got out of my truck and said ‘What did I do?.. He said ‘I’m stopping you for your tinted windows.’ I said, ‘I bought the truck like this, I drive up and down the bayou, and you’re going to stop me for tinted windows now?’ He said ‘Are you arguing with me?"
Callais said she went inside and got her husband, and when she went back outside, the officer asked for her license and proof of insurance. She says she told him "no," and that she would call the State Police. According to Callais, Charpentier threatened to arrest her if she did so.
Callais' husband said that after a Lafourche Parish deputy arrived on the scene as backup, Charpentier asked the ocuple not to call the state police, then left without writing a ticket.
The following Friday, Callais says that Charpentier pulled her over again.
"I was coming down St. Louis Street, and I saw the cop car and heard the sirens," According to Callais, she pulled over, but when the officer went to another car, she began to leave.
She said that Charpentier confronted her, and she suggested that they go to the Town Hall to discuss the situation with the police chief. According to Callais, Charpentier said, "You don't tell me what to do."
The woman said that as she was explainning that she had been in touch with the state police to test the windows, her foot slipped off the brake pedeal, and the truck lurched forward a few feet.
"He jumped through my window, and I grabbed my cell phone to call for help," she said. "When I looked at him, he pepper-sprayed me. He handcuffed my hand and was trying to pull me out of the vehicle. I was in fear for my life, and I didn’t want to get out. He twisted my arm behind my back, and I said ‘You’re hurting me.’ He said ‘That’s what pain is for.'"
Callais says Charpentier pepper-sprayed her again, but she stayed in the truck until parish deputies arrived on the scene.
Charpentier could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

Damn, that's cold.
There's good cops, bad cops, and just plain stupid cops.
It really tainted his record.

Well there you go she was being an idiot

Yes why not beat a 61 year old woman, twist her arm and pepper spray her over being uncooperative at something that she was being questioned about.
Oh, and the thing she supposedly did wrong, was, in fact, COMPLETELY LEGAL.
She wasn't compliant before, what makes the cop think that her foot just happened to slip off the brake? She has been non-compliant and apparently doesn't like him. The officer thought she was going fuck it and trying to leave.

Its not like she went on for a half a mile, she went a few feet and stopped, she could have said it was an accident but it wouldn't have mattered cause the idiot cop jumped to conclusions and tried to rip her out of the car, then gave her a face full of pepper spray.

She had proved herself to by non-compliant before. When a car appears to be driving off you are to stop the driver.
Since when does 2 years make you a "veteran of the force?"
Also: That's one badass 61 year old.
This reminds me of one of my friend's dad. He was in his truck when he got pulled over by a cop (who had already had several complaints). Now, the cop asked him for his license, which is absolutely normal. So he reaches into his jacket (which was in the middle seat) for his wallet. The cop, thinking he was pulling out a weapon, shot him in the back twice. This caused his legs to spasm in a way that held down the accelerator, and having no control over the wheel, the truck promptly crashed into a fence. The cop then went to his window and jammed his gun into his face, saying, "You think you can run away from me, punk?" needless to say, the cop was sued and fired.
What a dick, it's people like him that tarnish the reputation of the cops in the eyes of everyone

He got what he was coming to him.
The cop not your friend's dad. That would be a pretty dumb thing to say.
Not to support what this cop did, but alot of old people are assholes, they act like they deserve all these special privileges and they don't. And once an asshole, always an asshole. I'm not gonna be respectful to somebody just because they are 80 years old, if you are a douche, I'll treat you like one.

So. Much. RAAGE.

They're the greatest generation, treat them as such.

That isn't the point for fucks sake. Someone that old gets pepper sprayed for uh... Nothing? That isn't right one way or the other.
For some reason I had this image of him knocking on her window from further behind the driver's door, and when she rolled it down, he jumped out, screamed "Your windows are too dark, bitch!" and then proceeded to spray her in the eyes.

I'll respect them when they respect me.
Is it just me, or have cops been getting stupider lately?

Nah, only stupid cops make the news.

Respect is earned.

Works both ways. Often resulting in a no win situation if both people are hardasses.
the woman was being a fool. she should have just co-operated with the policeman.
yes, his force was probably excessive but that doesn't excuse her being a pain.
Guess what, it doesn't matter if you bought the vehicle like that, the windows are still over-tinted. I don't know why she wouldn't show the officer her licence.
But deliberately spraying her and causing her pain because the truck slipped forward a bit is stupid.
Everyone's being stupid.
When will people learn that being old is not a fucking excuse.
She refused to show license / insurance details and the cop acted fine IMO.
I don't see why she should get special treatment because she's old.
Assholes get old. Thieves, murderers, they all get old.

Car lurched forward, probably looked like she was about to escape.
This whole thing actually reminds me of an old woman who walked into my bike pedal (I wasn't on it, I was stationary and holding the bike by my side) because she was walking too close to me though there was plenty of room to go past. She started saying stuff like "your pedal hit my leg" and I was all like "I was holding it here still, you walked into it" then she was all like "YOU HURT MY LEG!" at which point she pushed me and called me an idiot multiple times and said it was my fault.
I told her that if she wants to push me again, I'll push back and she'd come off alot worse than me. Then she said something like "YOU TRY BEING 80 AND SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE"
This is what I dislike. Who fucking cares how old she was, she walked into my bike, it was her fault. Her age and how hurt she was is irrelevant to me. She may as well have just walked into me when I was stood still and complained, or ran me over in her car and complained about the damage to her bumper. It's the same as the news story here. Her age is irrelevant, the cop acted as he would with anyone else, and I think that's just how it should be.
Anyway, to conclude my story I said "I don't care how old you are, you walked into my bike and it's your fault. How dare you blame me, fuck off." and she left.
Rate me dumb if you think I'm an asshole. Rate me agree if you think she's an asshole.
MACE TO THE FACE
Also I support the cop.
The cocaine was already in the back of my truck when I bought it!
