One of the leading scientists on the Rosetta Project gave a string of TV interviews in a shirt emblazoned with half-dressed women.
The angry reaction online spawned two hashtags, spoof images and has now led to a tearful apology as well.
The eyes of the world were focussed on Matt Taylor this week. The British scientist involved in the Rosetta Project - to land a spacecraft on a comet -
was at the heart of media coverage of the event. And so was his shirt. On Wednesday he appeared in front of the cameras wearing a bespoke short-sleeved number,
plastered in bright cartoon images of scantily-clad women.
People on Twitter were not amused. "Women are toooootally welcome in our community, just ask the dude in this shirt," tweeted a female tech journalist,
sarcastically. She was sent abusive tweets in response. Science is seen by many as a male dominated world, and so the shirt only reinforces the notion that
women aren't accepted on equal footing, claimed his critics. "For clarity -- No, the shirt is not "cool" or acceptable in a professional setting - on an engineer, scientist,
or anyone," tweeted another user.
...
BBC Trending contacted Taylor for comment but has not heard back. The outcry has evidently hit him hard though. During a press briefing this morning,
he broke down in tears and apologised for his choice of clothes. "The shirt I wore this week, I made a big mistake and I offended many people," he said.

It's not even a good shirt
its a fucking shirt

Man, I'm so glad we achieved this wonderful goal of making a man, who helped land a fucking spacecraft on a fucking comet, cry.
10/10 Achievement for humanity
I want that shirt.
Apparently, shirts tell people to fuck off.
What an age we live in.
It's a fucking shirt. It's literaly just a fucking shirt.
That shirt is so ridiculous I fuckin love it. The fact a bunch of people that have nothing more than to get offended at stupid shit brought the man to tears over it is fucking retarded.
its a fucking shirt
Some people are offended by anything. Just looking in their general direction would probably offend them too.
Jesus crikey, people think nowadays everything is sexist just for the sake to have a voice ffs.

Is being bisexual being sexist right now?
Fucking women
Who would have thought a woman would moan
In the defense of the scientist: it's a shirt, whatever. In the defense of the people offended: why would a scientist of one of the greatest space achievements in a century go around interviewed in a shirt like that? How can you be that stupid (yet obviously, also so intelligent)?

Because the shirt was made for him by a close friend (a woman) and he likes it.

He's a badass and can wear what he wants
The weirder an engineer, the better engineers they are.
I don't think its that he is stupid, I think its just the shirt he was wearing at the time and that is that, or just expected people to look at it as a joke, because its just a silly ass shirt.
You know what is the real stupidity though? Making a grown man cry because of his shirt, instead of focusing on real rape, real sexism, real misogyny.
Nevermind the whole landing a fucking spacecraft on a god damn comet thing, he wore a shirt with half-dressed women on it
burn him at the stake
Fucking women
As dumb as this situation is, comments like that don't fucking achieve anything.
this just in man wears a shirt he likes
It's a shirt.
IT'S A FUCKING SHIRT.
I think it's tacky as fuck tbh. Not anything to get offended over, but ugly nonetheless.
Anita sarkeesian will now ruin space travel
I'm offended by stupid people who are easily offended, and go out of their way to make people they don't like due to their personal opinion upset, because they themselves got upset. The guy helped with orbiting a comet then landing a goddamn rover on it, he deserves to wear whatever gaudy Hawaiian shirt he wants.
a person calls someone sexist because of a shirt and people rather follow her logic rather then calling her out for assuming things of a person she doesn't even know
ah humanity

I've seen people legit saying that gay people are sexist/misogynistic because they don't like women.

Achieve anything... no. Help me vent anger... yes.
The shirt isn't sexist and it pisses me off he is receiving this kind of attention while he's working on science vital to our species survival (redirecting incoming asteroids).
list of people who are going to give a fuck in exactly 1 month: anyone stupid
List of people who should give a shit:

This is the sort of casual misogyny that stops women from entering certain scientific fields. They see a guy like that on TV and they don't feel welcome.
I really wonder who has a mindset like this.
"Wow that physicist wears a shirt that depicts women in revealing clothes. This shirt has completely removed my desire to become a physicist!"
Also what the fuck is casual misogyny?
unpleasant comments aimed at the vocal minority of feminists (as an example) who cry about this kind of thing simply points to the peaceful majority that they are right and is subversive to the egalitarian movement's goals.
i don't understand why people can't just address the issue itself without resorting to ad hominem.
Gay men are as misogynistic as straight men, if not more so. I have an indictment of the gay community right now, I’m actually really upset with them. You wanna talk about the fact that I have heard nobody in the gay community, no gay males, standing up for women on any level?”
“There is Sharia law active in Saudi Arabia, there’s a woman who’s about to be stoned – I have not heard [AIDS activist] Cleve Jones discuss her, and nor will he.”
“I think it’s what happens to you as a group when you are starting to get most of what you fought for? What do you do now? What I would hope they would do is extend a hand to women. Women, by-and-large, have very much helped the gay community get to where they are today.
“And I have seen not a single peep from these people, who supposedly represent lesbians as well… when the equal pay act was shut down by Republicans in the Senate, not a single man mentioned that.”
“I see now people who have basically fought for the right to stand on top of a float wearing an orange speedo and take molly [MDMA].
“[Gay misogyny] is a huge problem.”
White men are misogynists, black men are misogynists, gay men are misogynists, governments are misogynists, gamers are misogynists, people hanging out in the street whistling at a woman walking by are misogynists.
Some people are assholes. It's just a shirt. He could've worn a shirt that says "FUCK YOU UP" and barely anybody would bat an eye.
Does wearing a shirt with scantily clad women (that was a birthday present which obviously would've been a surprise) mean you automatically support sexism? Fuck no. If you think that, you're honestly a goddamn idiot.
These people should grow a fucking backbone and actually try to look at real issues.
