• Gonna Go Donate Blood

I've gone once before, it didn't end super well, sadly. With about thirty seconds of tasty fluid drainage to go, I started feeling incredibly warm and nauseas, so they had to pull the cord and suddenly roll me over into shock mode. The gauze they put on my arm where they had stuck me was poorly set in the rush, and they put my hand several inches above it, so I wasn't even holding onto it. Since I was half-numb on a sort of partial shock (I wasn't actually all bad, but I had never had blood drawn in my life), I didn't notice that I was bleeding all over myself and wasted another good quarter-liter of the red stuff on my clothes. The worst part about all this? If I just stuck it out for another thirty seconds, then the blood I had [tried] to donate would have been usable, but since I was problematic, they had to toss it. Made the contribution useless. What should I eat before I go, how much should I eat? Is there any way to avoid that weird as hell warm feeling I got last time? I'm a whole lot more nervous to go now than the first time I went now that I'm aware it can actually go poorly. I really want to make a successful donation this time around, but I know being nervous as shit doesn't help.
Well if it is the day before, eat low fat foods and ones enriched in iron.
Donating blood is extremely healthy according to my old bio teacher. It forces the body to regenerate more red blood cells, which are generally speaking going to be more efficient than their elderly counterparts. I would donate blood, however, I tend to pass out even when I get blood samples taken. It takes about three of the small vials before I get really dizzy and exhibit shock-like symptoms :( A funny story about this actually (and this is why I love my step dad, he's pretty awesome, no sarcasm). I was sick and in the ER with some whatever something or other, and they wanted to get blood taken. My step father was with me, since it's not only convenient (he works in the same hospital complex, and EVERYONE knows him), but also because he cared. So anyway, the phlebotomist came, and on the 3rd or 4th vial, I started losing consciousness. Everyone in the room was really confused, but I snapped to it, but still dizzy. I vaguely remember hearing my step father start teasing me and getting everyone else to join in shortly after he realized I was fine (he's a nurse, paramedic, and paratrooper, so he could tell the sick from not sick probably just by even smelling them from a mile away), after that, he told a nurse to, "go get him some Gatorade; it will help him recover faster than water." Then everyone started talking about Gatorade, which was the funny part. Not sure why, but I remember the situation funnier than it seems when written out.
Make sure you stand up really quick after the nurse's done... If you're lucky enough you'll faint :v:
I just never donated blood because most of the nurses that came to my school were fuckups and had a bad reputation for sticking in the needle in wrong.
"Well thanks for having me! Guess I'll be g -" *thunk*
Hahahahaa that'd be awesome
I'm going to do this as soon as I turn 18, but damn, I'm afraid I can't take it too. Well, I guess it's just a question of getting used to it.
Why give them free blood if they're going to sell it to their patients?
Why give them free blood if they're going to sell it to their patients?
Because he's a nice person.
Because he's a nice person.
And also Canada.
That reminds me, I need to give blood again soon. Haven't done it in a while, B-
I want to give blood. I've had blood drawn before and IVs put in me so it can't be that bad for me.
I don't like it too much when they take blood out of you. It's not that i find blood disgusting or it hurts, it just feels, weird.
Why give them free blood if they're going to sell it to their patients?
Because they would die otherwise. A donation saves a live. Something more than one.
I have type O blood so I can donate my blood to more people. I feel as if I have a duty to at least do it once since my blood is so helpful.
When I first donated blood I felt nothing. Didn't feel dizzy or nauseated at all. I don't understand why a person would get nausea unless he/she didn't eat before donating blood.
I just never donated blood because most of the nurses that came to my school were fuckups and had a bad reputation for sticking in the needle in wrong.
Yeah, those fuckers are terrible. I've met blind badgers with better injection skills. Oh well AB+ motherfuckers.

Even the thought of having someone drawing blood from me makes me queasy Otherwise I'd give blood on a regular basis, apparently it's good for you too

[editline]10th June 2011[/editline] ie not sufficient to be disqualified, but enough to experience some effects.
Yeah, those fuckers are terrible. I've met blind badgers with better injection skills. I had a nurse at my school move a needle around in my arm for 3 WHOLE MINUTES trying to get the blood flowing because she missed. Ended up with a massive bruise on my arm for about 2 weeks. I get blood samples took all of the time because I'm anemic :v:. I wish they could just take it all and replace it with healthy blood :smith:
Just drink a lot of water and eat like you normally would. It isn't very complex and it isn't surgery so not much has to be done beforehand. I have a very high iron count, almost too high, and I've had my blood drawn numerous times and I've never fainted or had any bad side effects. I volunteered at a blood drive once too. Don't try and push yourself. Take as much time as you need, lay down until you KNOW you can stand up.
I had to go in a blood donations truck and everyone there was black. They were playing Reggae while everyone was giving out blood. One kid looks a little sick after and he decides to sit down next to me afterwards. Nobody paid attention to the kid and he hurled a shitload into the garbage next to me and I got to watch it all. Fun times.
When I got my blood test done, I was feeling perfectly fine. Then I fainted 10 minutes later. It turns out that I should take a little something with me to eat afterwords.
The second time I gave blood I was talking to an old man while eating and drinking the free tea and biscuits. He was on his 76th blood donation. I wish I was that generous. The first time i went, when i was done they asked if i was ok. I said yeah, but they must have misheard me because they suddenly went into "lay down, it's going to be ok" mode. I had to put my feet above my head to help get blood to my brain or something. I would have interupted and said i feel fine, but i didn't want to make them feel silly that they were fussing over nothing.
I've given blood two or three times, which is about 6-9 pints worth of blood. My hip surgery, I received at least 3 bags of blood, nose surgery, probably 1, had two surgeries when I had e coli, too. Then there's the times when i was a baby.... I'm due to give back a few pints.
What happens if you get a boner after having blood drawn hmmm?
