Unfortunately, some large organizations who regularly solicit for money are often using funds for political motives or ‘overhead’ costs. In a series of posts, we’ll be investigating three popular charities that don’t deserve your charity.**********Everyone knows the Salvation Army. Whether it’s the secondhand goods at their thrift stores or their collection kettles outside department stores, the Salvation Army is ubiquitous to the holiday season. However, the Salvation Army’s virulent opposition to gay rights both in public and through persistent legislative lobbying raises the question how donations intended for the needy are being spent. Many people forget that the Salvation Army is in fact an Evangelical church, and as such, it tends to have a hard-right social agenda. In fact, the Salvation Army goes so far as to say gay people shouldn’t be having sex. You can find this nugget on their website: “Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life.” Starting at the beginning of George W. Bush’s presidency in 2001, the Salvation Army began lobbying for an exemption to equal labor practices for government-funded faith-based organizations. Why? Because the Salvation Army wanted to continue to discriminate against gays and prevent them from being hired In 2004, the Salvation Army threatened to close all its soup kitchens in the New York City area—which would have ended $250 million worth of contracts with the city—if they were forced to offer benefits to same-sex couples. This move would have lost the Salvation Army around $70 million in direct funding from the city and endangered the lives of several thousand people reliant on the Salvation Army. Was this supposed to be a principled stand? All the homeless people receiving care from the Salvation Army would be turned out on the street. What would have motivated The Salvation Army to make such a callous move? They said that, by offering benefits to same sex couples, they’d be supporting HIV/AIDS because HIV/AIDS is only the product of homosexual intercourse. AIDS? How does AIDS factor in? Oh yeah, I forgot! Gay people don’t suffer from non-gay sex related maladies. If a same sex couple needs health benefits, it must be from all that AIDS they’re spreading around. Is there any way to construe this as anything but bigotry?
Sorry if this one is late.
What you get is what you get unfortunatly. You'd have to pretend not to be gay if you wanted anything. It's going to take the world another hundred years to get over homosexuals. Just like blacks.
Well I guess that's that. That's terribly disappointing but not that surprising, all in all.
It's a form of discrimination; discrimination is what idiots do.

..But I can buy so many awesome old PC games there!
Salvation Army actually does a quite a bit of good, so before you refuse to donate outright you should talk to the person who heads your local branch and see what their policies are. And in Canada they can't discriminate against LGBT individuals because it would be illegal and they could lose their tax-exempt status for it, so what applies in the United States may not apply worldwide.
i gave like £3 to them the other day sorry everyone who loses their freedoms to lobbying :(
here in NZ the salvation army tried to campaign against civil unions being legalized but they apologized for it later and said they had no reason to stop it. it's more the US salvation army that is so old fashioned.
That's kind of a tough situation. While they have these hateful beliefs, they do a lot of people good every year and help out a lot of people. You almost have to say that it's a better alternative than no one getting the charity.
You know I never really understood how some people can have the mindset that they have the right to tell other people what they can or can't do with their lives.

I volunteered at the salvation army once because my dad dragged me into it because they needed help. I was stationed at the computer desks (office stuff), where I would ask people coming in some questions. It was like this census thing for them. The form did included sexual orientation. So later on, there was this gay couple coming in. It was evident, they were holding hands. They got assigned to my station, i asked them the questions, they said they were gay. Now before I even worked, they went through what to do when this or that happens. They isn't say anything about people that are LBGT. After entering some info, they went in to get the they needed and left. So generally this does not occur, at least based of my experience... Btw, this was in Canada

Oh America, constantly behind.
Well you're Canadian, it's different here than in the US But the fact they're even asking sexual orientation as a condition of using the charity is illegal though
Well it wasn't a condition, I'm guessing they want to know how much of which sexual orientation goes to the place...
Honestly you should have to right not to tell an organisation etc. your sexual preference or gender, why would that affect anything?
Well you're Canadian, it's different here than in the US But the fact they're even asking sexual orientation as a condition of using the charity is illegal though
If it's Illegal to deny LGBT persons aid, it may be required by the Canadian government that they record orientation specific information about the recipients? As to make sure there isn't any denials of service.
I was volunteering at one awhile ago and had a very openly gay man working there with me all the time, but then again this was in Australia.
It's right on their page, along with anti-porn. Chick-fill-a is the same way, gives money to anti-gay programs.

Chick-Fil-A Fast Food Chain Donated Nearly $2 Million To Anti-Gay Groups In 2009 [release]Want a side order of anti-gay rhetoric with your chicken sandwich? Chik-Fil-A might be able to help you with that. According to EqualityMatters.org, the fast food company donated nearly $2 million in 2009 to groups that have anti-gay agendas. IRS 990 forms show that WinShape, the restaurant chain's charitable foundation which was founded by Chick-Fil-A's chairman S. Truett Cathy in 1994, gave to the following groups in 2009: Marriage & Family Legacy Fund: $994,199 Fellowship Of Christian Athletes: $480,000 National Christian Foundation: $240,000 Focus On The Family: $12,500 Eagle Forum: $5,000 Exodus International: $1,000 Family Research Council: $1,000 An earlier investigation by Equality Matters found that Chick-Fil-A, which was recently voted the third most beloved restaurant chain in the United States, donated more than $1 million to anti-gay groups between 2003 and 2008. The IRS forms from 2009 are the most recent available as public records. In January Chick-Fil-A president Dan Cathy defended the chain saying, "We're not anti-anybody... Our mission is to create raving fans." Cathy was also forced to respond to gay activists' claims after the company provided lunch at a marriage-training event sponsored by Pennsylvania Family Institute. Cathy asserted, "While my family and I believe in the Biblical definition of marriage, we love and respect anyone who disagrees." In recent months students attending at least six universities, including University of North Texas, Mississippi State University, and the University of New Orleans, have launched petitions asking their schools not to support anti-LGBT businesses like Chick-Fil-A. LGBT activists have also staged protests at a number of the chain's locations throughout the country, including Chicago and Hollywood.[/release] source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/01/chick-fil-a-donated-anti-gay-groups-2009_n_1069429.html

Chick-Fil-A has such good food but they hate me :( [editline]30th November 2011[/editline] and they aren't open on fucking sunday because of a fictional person
no it's not if i was hiring teaching staff, i'd discriminate against those on the child sex offenders register
that's different. They have a criminal record. Also, Atleast in America it's illegal for them to work near children.
I just donated $1.00 to them.
