So when I dropped out of high school half away through, around the end of my sophomore year, I realized how disconnected you get to people sort of like the whole grade school/middle school split to high school, accept a little more extreme. The only contact I had with people were basically my two closest friends here in Phoenix, Arizona (which wasn't and still isn't much), and my two out of state buds, one in Texas (Firegod522 here on the forums) and one in Michigan, who I knew through starting up some servers during my freshman year in high school.
My last girlfriend left me shortly after I dropped out, however prior to this we were at two different high schools. I had left the one she was at because the school was ridiculously "progressive", and you had to do [i]BULLSHIT[/i] like explain to teachers why you deserve a certain grade, even though you had done everything right, this of course would affect your grade. We visited somewhat often, but that's a different story; she would argue with that I'm sure, but I digress.
So for two years I kicked around some various programming projects and on a lesser but still relative note, small web design and web development projects, and now I'm working on my major in Software Engineering in community college. Community college, for the Facepunch demographic who's still in high school here, is about as boring as watching grass grow. Sure, you can go to parties if you're one of those people, but they're nowhere nearly as common in community college versus a university as a freshman.
So, since I'm a part time college student in an environment with varied age groups, there's like no socializing, and I've got a lot of time to waste. People in community college pretty much focus on their work, and go home. At least this is the case in my experience. So in my spare time as one of my branch projects, I wrote this [url=http://labs.andrewmcwatters.com/visualizer/]visualizer[/url], and in the last two or three days, I've been writing this:

looker is basically this Facebook application I've been writing that encompasses other small apps which will all deal with more intimate or fun social things.
The app inside of looker that I'm working on right now is called interested, and it does what it sounds like(, or will do since it's in beta). interested is an app inside of looker that will inform you of who's interested in you. I'm currently in the process of devising a system of how that should be executed, but right now I'm thinking it will be a one-way notification between two individuals who like each other (so things aren't awkward) based on a random gamble after a relatively lengthy duration of time after two individuals like each other in interested.
After interested is done, I'll have some sort of facemash remake and hot or not remake inside of it too. Who cares about originality, right? It's a nice time waster to develop, and it'll be fun, because it's your friends, rather than people on some website you don't know.
Anyway, it'll be fun to see that 5% of people have rated me hot once I'm done with all this.
Cheers, Face[del]book[/del]punch!

I cannot believe I forgot to provide a link.
I have a terrible self image and no matter who tells me how "hot" or "cute" I am, which for whatever ridiculous reason I get a lot, I don't believe it. It's a mental disorder... a very common one too. It just strikes those with a low self-esteem even harder.
Cool idea, but I'm not sure if many people on facepunch will love it.

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. And getting it out in general, too. It works better when a lot of people are using it.
Dammit, I'd give you a dollar but I don't have a credit card or bank account. What about this PayPal mastercard? Is it like some virtual credit card I can use to pay people?
I wouldn't sign up for any of that PayPal Debit/Credit card stuff, I tried it once, and I had to go through loops to get my account back to where it was.
Thanks for the thought, though, dude. It motivates me to work harder.
It's an interesting app, and I'm sure it will catch on when it's at the full version. I see a lot of apps being used like this on my friend's feeds and this is probably the only one that will work properly. The other apps just randomly choose people not taking note if you're male or female.

Wait, what?
The visualizer is pretty damn impressive, as well. I know it's an older project but it would be cooler if you had like 9-10 songs you could choose from, just to as mix things up a bit.
Why is the song clean on your visualizer?
[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
this song is about college and you are taking our the weed and beer part.
[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
and the ass part :(

people like you are attention whores, saying they don't deserve attention every chance they get
Cool, OP lives in Phoenix
I am going to come to your house and rape you.
MY MAN, YOU SOUND LIKE A FUCKING GENIUS!
YOU BRILLIANT BASTARD!
Godamn you should do all you can to make cash off this shit. Fuck what the facepunch demographic thinks, this is a revolutionary idea.
Nicework, and interesting, time tested concept. Good luck and advertise well if you want it to be big!
well done, brah.
So the idea is that you say who you're interested in, and the other person is only notified if they also say they're interested? Because that sounds pretty awesome. People have been looking for a long time for a way to ask their random friends if they're interested without making things awkward.

I don't understand why all of the common apps are so horrid. Surely it can't be that hard to create simple design and simple back end code.

Sorry it was a really bad attempt at being slightly humorous.

I was thinking about having a url parameter to change the .mp3. In fact, it was a dev friend of mine who suggested it, but I couldn't implement it at the time, because I was tunnel vision coding looker.

I'm working on the front end quirks right now. It's currently got an issue where it doesn't toggle liking and unliking someone correctly right now.
This reminds me of that program he writes @ the start of "The Social Network" with the look ranker.
I just added a UI element which tells you if you had liked someone or not. There's a bug with the front end though, because it says you like all the wimens.

It feels just as exciting developing this, to be honest. It's just I'm not a Harvard student, nor is it exploding overnight.
[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
Sorta fixed the UI issue right now.

Oh, just so you guys know, I've been designing and coding up to the latest 4 in the morning. It's so exhilarating, it's crazy.
lolfacebookcrusheslol
This is a good thing. It will go big.
[editline]yes[/editline]
Maybe one day, [del]when[/del] if she breaks up with her boyfriend. I don't imagine that happening anytime soon. :sigh:
Dude this one chick I know through one of my tight buds, so smokin' hot. She's on the demo snapshots. I would treat her well, no doubt.
Right so, when you "like" someone they get a notification but it's anonymous? And if they like you back it reveals the name?
When you like someone, and they use the app and like you too, only one of you gets notified. Don't worry, when this leaves open beta, I'll explain it on-site, and activate the timers which count down to who gets notified.
Are you going to implement some way to basically "unlike" someone?
Can anyone provide me with a mathematical algorithm that scales according to how many people you like on looker?
Basically, I don't want people abusing the app by clicking everyone. This was an old problem back with it's predecessor in 2010 called Nudge:
[img]http://old.andrewmcwatters.com/labs.andrewmcwatters.com_nudge%207_15%20PM%2012_1_2010.png[/img]
Basically Nudge was a naive looker that didn't ever get launched because I never finished the back end coding, I ported a lot of it to looker. It was totally unoptimized and literally made hundreds of API calls per users. It's because the average FB user has ~130 friends. Back then instead of making one FQL call to FB, it made a API call per friend to determine what their gender was to filter the friends list based on your sexual preference.
Back then it took nearly a whole minute or more for the page to finish rendering, and you saw it happen too. Calls now take about 100ms. So that makes looker 600 times faster, if I'm not stupid with math.
Anyway, anyway, with Nudge, the concept was both of you got notified instantly. I trashed that idea, and came up with a three to five day grace period. After the second person liked someone else.
I want to scale this 3/5 day grace period based on how many people you like on looker.
Good idea? Bad idea?

[QUOTE=Apache249;28358745]Are you going to implement some way to basically "unlike" someone?[/QUOTE]
It currently has that, but while it works flawlessly on the server-side, on the client-side, it looks as if it's not updated when it is. I'm currently fixing that as I post.
[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
Found the bug. Everything works fine now. The only thing missing for interested now is the grace period implementation.
[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
YES. JUST TESTED IT. Works. :h:
[QUOTE=Tetracycline;28357614]people like you are attention whores, saying they don't deserve attention every chance they get[/QUOTE]
An attention whore? Really? I barely have any pictures on my facebook because of my low self image. At parties/gatherings/whatever, I refuse getting my picture taken. Attention whores do the complete opposite.
I like staying in the shadows unnoticed. I fucking hate praise and shit like that more than "thanks" or "that's pretty cool."
I hate it when people stare at me, I fucking hate it when girls check me out. I fucking hate all that bullshit. It's annoying. Stop fucking looking at me.
You're just a moron who thinks he has me "figured out" when in reality you don't know shit.

You know, I reread this and sympathize partially. I just try to dive into social situations when I can though, so I think that's the difference. When I go without socializing for a duration of time, I feel weird.
