id Software's John Carmack began his annual QuakeCon keynote apologizing to PC gamers for the state of the studio's latest shooter, Rage.
During his speech, Carmack acknowledged that the buggy game has generated ill feelings within the PC community, and that it had a lackluster ending. He also noted that the game's world itself was rather shell-like, offering very little in regards to virtual population. The lack of driver support was also "problematic," calling it "really, really poorly handled" and a lesson the studio learned for future titles.
But he also acknowledged that most of the studio's resources were shifted over to Doom 4 once the post-apocalyptic game hit the streets. Because of that, there has been relatively little time to fix the PC version's problems since its launch although several patches have improved its performance.
Carmack also admitted that he was disappointed with the marketing aspect for Rage, saying that it led customers to believe the mutant-filled FPS was more like similarly-themed RPGs on the market. "People expected it to be more like Fallout or Borderlands but that was never our intention,” Carmack said. "That hurt us in that the single-player was long for a shooter but very short for people expecting an RPG. The messaging on Rage wasn’t all it should have been."
Rage wasn't the only project giving way to Doom 4. Carmack said that id Software's mobile branch has been shut down as the studio focuses on getting the next Doom sequel out the door.
"We did make the decision to close up our mobile development, which saddens me a lot, in that I love doing the mobile work -- taking that time, spending a month, a year or something working on a mobile project," Carmack explained, "but we had some developers on there that we wanted to bring onto the Doom 4 project.
"It was looked at as something that; yes, this is fun, this is fun for the company and its entertaining and it makes money, but it's not a grand slam sort of thing on there. The Bethesda family really is about swinging for the fences. I hope we get back to mobile in various ways in the future, but the big real aim is blockbuster, AAA titles, and for id that means Doom 4, it means that we get the whole company behind that after we get Doom 3: BFG Edition out the door, essentially everybody will be focused on Doom 4 as a project."
Carmack went on to admit that the studio had actually finished an iOS project which is now on indefinite hold. "Unfortunately, we have a couple projects — we have an iPhone project that's sitting in the can right now with the rest of the Doom classics stuff, but we just havent been able to push it through," Carmack explained. "We're going to hold off until some appropriate time — maybe we can do it with the Doom 3: BFG stuff on there."
As for when Doom 4 would be complete, Carmack wouldn't specify. "Every decade there will be a Doom," Carmack said, "but hopefully we can do better than that."
Oh he didnt call piracy?
Rage was too shallow and didn't last very long. Not to mention the half-assed racing gimmick. Other than that the graphics and visuals were pretty good.
I don't get how they don't understand what makes a great game on PC. What road of decisions lead them to make that horribly linear game. Inside a sandbox world.
I mean you have to force yourself to be terrible to make a sandbox linear :v:

Yeah I love the rustic look of unloaded textures
Whenever i would turn quickly, textures would quickly load in. It was very distracting and would quickly get annoying.

That were fixed.
RAGE had no story at all, that was very disappointing for me. And it was constantly introducing new characters and leaving the others out.
it's ok carmack, it's ok
not sure about this Doom thing though, let's just hope it's less like D3 and more like the originals, monster design and all

I actually really liked all the designs in Doom 3; it's the cheap jump scares that really annoyed me.
For people who never played RAGE, take it from a guy who preordered it at 59€.
The game is about 24gb, looks like shit and runs like shit.
Have some pictures of RAGE from launch:

sometimes i feel like the only person who absolutely loves doom 3
fun fact: many of the areas in doom 3 are actually based on old alpha versions of the levels from the first doom
That were fixed.

No they're not, they're still broken.
It's not like the story or gameplay can make up for it.
I thought RAGE looked like shit from the moment I first saw it, looked pretty boring. Then I played it and it was surprisingly pretty and entertaining. Everyone expected too much of it IMO
I hope Doom 4 is better than D3. I kinda liked D3 cause it had a silly storyline where it involved cutscenes with the bad guys just being dicks and the silent marine protagonist just barely opening his mouth.
Of course we are going to expect a lot from it. Just look who made it. John Carmack's name carries a lot of value in the gaming world. This is his Ricochet.
Doom 4. Wow. I hope it gets released with those virtual reality goggles that Carmack supported in that kickstarter project.
Id first revolutionized the gaming scene with 3D FPS games, watch them do it again with virtual reality FPS games
Fuck, I'm excited as balls for Doom 4. I love Doom 3. I think I'll go reinstall it...
I hope Doom 4's better than Doom 3 too; I also hope the environments are somewhat varied, with solid shooting and whatnot, whilst not as linear as modern FPSs; maybe have hubs that the stages can be accessed from. Imagine Painkiller meets HeXen meets the original Doom games, sans the keycard "puzzles", and that's what i'm thinking Doom 4 could be.

They're sure going to make use of these goggles since Doom 3 BFG already supports them if you've read the Kickstarter page or watched the video.

I agree. The monster designs were probably the best part about Doom 3.

Doom 3 BFG is gonna be the first Oculus Rift ready game iirc
I watched that whole keynote yesterday, damn that guy can talk. I've seen some of his keynotes in the past but it still amazes me how long he can ramble about without taking a single break.
Grabbed RAGE a while after it was released and on sale. Guess I was lucky enough that patches had make it working by the time I got it; ran surprisingly well on my 8800 GT.
So am I the only one who played Rage and actually enjoyed it? I mean yeah, it could have been a FAR better game, but it wasn't that bad. I loved the racing and the gunplay handled alright. The game was most definitely too short.
I liked the way enemies reacted to being shot in Rage
I'm just waiting for the Doom 4 trailer.
Is there a video of his keynote up anywhere? I can't seem to find it.
Well it was one of their first games being developed for consoles and pcs at the same time. Failures often happens to companies that try that for the first time.
Hopefully, Doom4 will give me that good adventurous feeling I got when playing Doom3. (no, not a joke, nor a "very dark can't see shit" joke either)
I enjoyed RAGE. The only bad things about it were the bad texture loading rate, some blurry textures in lots of places, and the awful ending that ends with a... I don't even know what that was. It was the most "meh" thing ever.
Rage was a cool game, it was good, but it suffered from consolitis- linear, too short, and resource saving flukes (not preloading whats around you and loading it when you turn to look in that area for example.)
