Hello facepunch, I have decided to create this thread to prepare everyone for the inevitable. Who knows when or how the world will end? Will it end in 2012 like the Mayans predicted? Or will it happen at some unforseen moment? Will it be a massive superstorm that wipes out humanity? Asteroid? Supervolcano? Gamma-ray burst? Judgement Day? Pandemic? Well, i'm not taking any chances. Better to be prepared and not need to be than caught off-guard unprepared. So be prepared to cash in your chips, but if you want to survive, post here and I will prepare you for the Apocalypse.

Doesn't fucking matter AT ALL
When it's the end of the world no matter how you prepare the force it has is going "Oh look someone actually prepared!" then steamroll you.

The Mayans didn't predict that the world would end in 2012.
The Mayans didn't predict that the world would end in 2012.
I know, but the end of the Mayan calendar is in 2012, so that is their prediction.
you mean when humanity ends?
that always pissed me off how people don't make that distinction, like the world ends with us
anyway the world will end when the sun gets fucked up and then destroys Earth and a bunch of other planets
remains to be seen if we'll be there when it happens

The ticker knows all.
For the ticker is a T-1000.
<<RISE OF THE MACHINES 2012>>

Who knows, maybe an artificial intelligence (can you say GlaDOS) will try to destroy humanity, or maybe assimilate us.
I know, but the end of the Mayan calendar is in 2012, so that is their prediction.
They predicted a new calendar cycle, not the end of the world. They considered it good to be there for a new cycle to start, they celebrated it.
I'm watching Curiosity right now, looks like Yellowstone National Park has the potential to be a supervolcano.
Be back later.
I'm just going to guess the big crunch. The sun isn't supposed to destroy us for another couple billion years (number pulled out of thin air), and by then we will have some way to travel around the galaxy and inhabit other planets. Then, when the Big Crunch occurs, the universe will be destroyed. That is, unless we escape into a different universe or something.
We will never know.

the big crunch sounds ridiculous
it brings to mind potato chips
I do not want the end of the universe to be accompanied by a big booming voice going "MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM"
SkyNet WILL destroy the world

Big Crunch:

Then, there's the Big Rip theory, which thinks that the universe will expand and eventually rip apart.
...the galaxies would first be separated from each other. About 60 million years before the end, gravity would be too weak to hold the Milky Way and other individual galaxies together. Approximately three months before the end, the solar system (or systems similar to our own at this time, as the fate of our own solar system 7.5 billion years in the future is questionable) would be gravitationally unbound. In the last minutes, stars and planets would be torn apart, and an instant before the end, atoms would be destroyed.
Point is, if we colonize planets besides the ones in the Solar System, we're pretty much safe for a couple million years.
Universe will continue to expand, see cosmological inflation (not to be confused with inflation in economics terms; 2 different concepts).
I believe that nothing we've seen in film, the media, and entertainment; which has, of course, depicted a very graphic and/or gruesome demise for humanity, will ever happen. Society will go on, humanity will progress and fall at random points in time. It'll be like a very boring rollercoaster with its short-lived moments of intensity and overestimated frights. We'll live on, and keep living on, until we either leave this planet in many centuries time, or collapse in a few thousand years. Then, other species will rise and fall as we did.
I don't think there will be an apocalypse to end human kind, but I think we'll become a new kind of being in the very far future. After all, we're meant to evolve.
Kangaroos will take over and enslave the human race.
