Was it because of cell phones? No. The real reason is way less exciting. Apparently, military scientists and entomologists (basically bug scientists) have teamed up to discover that it's a combination of a fungus and a virus, a sort of kick ass one-two punch that knocks bees down for the count. They're unsure how the combo works but it makes for a killer cocktail that does its damage in the bee's belly (leaving scientists to think it's nutritional). It's been known that the fungus was part of the problem, but new software developed by the military uncovered a new DNA-based virus called N. ceranae. What's crazy is how these bees die:

One perverse twist of colony collapse that has compounded the difficulty of solving it is that the bees do not just die - they fly off in every direction from the hive, then die alone and dispersed.

Sort of an insect insanity.
My grandpa would tell me to not use my phone saying it would kill all the bees.
I watched a video about this two years ago in science class. old news
FoxDie for insects?
I watched a video about this two years ago in science class. old news
Old news? Olds
It's quite a tragedy really.
They fly off in random directions then die alone..? :ohdear:
So it's like insect rabies?
I hate bees, this is great news for me!
Terrible. Poor bees.
I think cellphone stations kill them too
I hate bees, this is great news for me!
Without bees = Mass food shortages worldwide.
I hate bees, this is great news for me!
I think you're mixing up bees with wasps and hornets here.
Bees, you so crazy.
Bees, you so crazy.
It's nothing.
Who cares? They're flying mini vuvuzela's.
Who cares? They're flying mini vuvuzela's.
Bees polenate plants and flowers which grow food and produce oxygen. :downs:
Without bees = Mass food shortages worldwide.
It's way bigger than that. Who's gonna pollinate all the flowers? If the flowers die, many other insects die. If those insects die, other creatures die. And when those die, more creatures die. And eventually more shit dies and some shit stops happening. Will take a long ass time to recover from the loss of the bee. And we will lose many species in the progress.
I hate bees, this is great news for me!
Without bees the plants and trees would take longer to reproduce. Less trees = less oxygen.
FoxDie for insects?
except foxdie gives people heart attacks and its a collection of genetically engineered miniature robots programmed to attack certain people and this is a mushroom.
They fly off in random directions then die alone..? :ohdear:
Bees (and ants) do this as a colony-defence method preventing infection to the rest of the hive.
Despite it being possible to use man made methods to do what bees do, I'll miss the little fuckers. Though these days, they're so fucking angry.
Why the fuck are plants so dependent upon a single insect.
Zombie virus

This benefits both grower and the honey maker. The bees pollinate, feed and thrive. CCD was originally blamed on vehicle fumes which were known to cause death occasionally when hives we transported en-masse.
Where's :bees: when you need it?
The bees flying off to die alone... Is this an instinctual action to protect the hive from contamination?

If they'd die off, we would just need to get some other insect, or transfer the pollen manually.

Bees perform in-species and cross-species pollination which causes natural evolution and mutation. We can use artificial selection but it is expensive and time consuming, especially on a large scale. It's not as simple as replace X with Y. Bees act in such a way to perform this task effectively and naturally compared to other insects. We cannot also yet synthesise Honey.
