Ok, maybe this is not news to some, but I'vent seen a thread about it in here and since these are awesome news for us all, I think I should share it. Also +1 for Elon and Tesla!
Tesla’s new range of Supercharger stations – promising 30-minute fast charges to all EVs (electric vehicles) - (...) network should have the majority of the UK covered by next year. Tesla boss Elon Musk has said he’ll let other manufacturers use it, so long as they keep charging free for their customers.
This was taken from a Nissan Leaf preview. The idea of powering a car for free feels fucking weird to me. Regardless, I hope it catches on in southern US areas one day.
Tesla, come to my country already!
Elon Musk is one of those rare saints who actually puts delivering a good product or service above just "existing to make money", and he's still filthy goddamn rich over it. Imagine that.

I wonder how exactly this is going to pan out, because as a business model providing a free battery charge for every compatible electric car will not be sustainable. It would become a burning hole in the pockets of Tesla. That hole would keep getting bigger as electric cars become more widely adopted.

Sometimes, the revenue vs cost of free charging is generally greater than fee charging. Alternatively you can have free charging as an incentive for customers to use your service/etc and raise your property value with it. These systems are providing energy to the Superchargers. Since solar power only requires the initial cost (and some maintenance as well), I assume it's actually sustainable. It's both brilliant and simple.
Podes crer.. Mas já não deve faltar muito! /portuguese
A julgar pelo que este país é? Mais 5 anos e caro que fode + modelos mais fracos gg portugal... gg :( [editline]26th August 2014[/editline] And it's a shame aswell, because their cars might not look like something unique, but I still quite like their designs, and thats always a big plus to me.
Whoa the new Leaf doesn't look completely awful this time. Good work, Nissan! [editline]26th August 2014[/editline]
A julgar pelo que este país é? Then they sell what you don't use. Think of it like a normal power company except they build a mini coal generator in your back yard and sell you power from that. They still own the solar panels. They just sell you the juice.
This man is just flipping off the establishment at every turn..
The sad thing is that im pretty sure we will never get Tesla here, but if we do expect to see it costing the soul of 1000 babies.
This man is just flipping off the establishment at every turn..
One wonders how long it will take before he becomes involved in an 'unfortunate accident'.
A very rare breed in this kind of world. Hopefully he won't end up like Tesla did, and instead more like Jonas Venture, but more fortunate.
Luckily, the proverbial Edison this time around is nowhere near able to stop him. Tesla died in relative obscurity, with Edison having succesfully slung a whole mountain of mud on his reputation and work and whose legacy went on with the adulation Tesla's deserved for nearly a century before people finally wised up. On the flip-side, Musk is a celebrity - a bona-fide tech idol - and conventional car manufacturers (whom everyone already hates) are falling over each other trying to find some way to muscle him out before he gets any more successful. It's beautiful.
When I get back home I'm gonna have to get me one of his cars.

It's easy to be forward-thinking and philanthropic when you have billions of dollars acquired through cutthroat business.

It's easy to be forward-thinking and philanthropic when you have billions of dollars acquired through cutthroat business.
Elon Musk was co-founder of X.com which bought Confinity in 2000 for their PayPal service. They then changed the whole company and brand around that PayPal service to become what it's known for. Musk hasn't had anything to do with PayPal since 2001, when it was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion. Musk got $165 million of that. Which he used to start SpaceX and join Tesla. He then used a lot of his money to dig Tesla out of almost certain doom. [editline]26th August 2014[/editline] Blaming Elon for what PayPal is now, is like blaming Will Wright for what SimCity is now.
The idea of powering a car for free feels fucking weird to me. Regardless, I hope it catches on in southern US areas one day.
Freaking seriously. There is one public EV charger in my entire state, and that's on a university campus.
SC's technically aren't free, in the 60kWh model the ability to use SC's costs an additional $2k. For the 85kWh and up the cost is built in to the package. So that, plus the fact that the SC's use solar panels that actually generate more energy than the SC consumes so Tesla actually sells electricity back to the grid, and the fact that other companies will start chipping in as well with the release of Tesla's patents means that the SC's will likely be a source of income for Tesla for a long time. An electrician is coming by this week to install a NEMA 14-50 outlet for when my Model S comes. Gas can kiss my ass.
With all the good-will coming from Elon Musk in terms of service and support I can't help but fear it'l end badly economically for him. But I suppose that his status as an engineering/tech guru and hints of general public mistrust towards GM/western car manufacturers in general will help carry him a long way.
The idea of powering a car for free feels fucking weird to me. Regardless, I hope it catches on in southern US areas one day.
it wont, all of our road maintenance money comes from gas tax, recently they bumped the tax up because more efficient MPG on more modern cars and EVs. This would be a huge threat to the south because there would be more of an incentive to switch to electric.

By the end of 2014 they will connect the two throughout the south. [editline]26th August 2014[/editline] Texas is actually one of the biggest customer bases for Tesla.

I still won't drive an EV.
