• Steve Jobs Voted Most Influential Man in Video Games, Igniting a Firestorm of Complaints
He didn’t develop a single game, console, or arcade machine himself, but don’t tell these survey participants that. According to Eurogamer (via MyNintendoNews), the majority of the 1,000 people surveyed (26%) believe that Steve Jobs is the leading man who shaped video games. Meanwhile, Gabe Newell, the co-founder of Valve – one of the most influential companies in the industry – received only 16% of the votes. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario – the most recognizable game character in the world – received only 7% of the votes. Oddly, Mark Zuckerberg, a guy who hasn’t done a darn thing for gaming (not directly, at least), received 3% of the votes. Before you attempt to wrap your head around these survey results, let’s look at the facts. (Invest for a cause with Invest For Kids – read more here.) The London Games Conference is a small event that that is heavily focused on the digital, social, cloud, and iOS/Android side of gaming. While the conference will feature one prominent speaker (Peter Molyneux, the creator of Fable and the founder of Lionhead), the lineup also consists an exec from a smaller studio (Eidos’ Ian Livingstone) and one from a dying studio (Sega’s John Clark). Nick Parker, a consultant from Parker Consulting, is scheduled to speak as well, along with Mike Mauler, the international EVP of GameStop (NYSE: GME); Tom Paquin, the CTO of OnLive; Professor Peter Sommer (a so-called “digital forensics expert”); Guillaume Rambourg, the managing director of GoG.com; and Feargal Sharkey, the CEO of UK Music. As you can see, these speakers are anything but the leaders of the game industry. Judging by the lack of major game publishers in attendance – no one from Nintendo (NTDOY), Sony (NYSE: SNE), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) or Activision (NASDAQ: ATVI) is on the speaker list – it’s not a stretch to assume that the majority of the attendees surveyed are small-town developers who wouldn’t even be working right now if it weren’t for the App Store. To them, Steve Jobs is everything. He gave them a way to pay the bills. But did he really have any hand in shaping the game industry? Let’s see what a few consumers had to say. (Check out Benzinga’s real time professional newsfeed here.) “Makes no sense at all,” one Eurogamer reader (who goes by the username Eraserhead) responded. “You could argue that Jobs was indirectly responsible for influencing the way games are priced and distributed in the last few years – at a push – but influencing games as a whole? What?” “I couldn’t name one game that Steve Jobs directly influenced,” another Eurogamer reader, yashin, wrote. “The man influenced a lot of things, games just wasn’t one of them. Sure, he created a gaming platform, but even that was a byproduct. He was just never a games man.” “Without wanting to discredit Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) for what they have done, this survey is incredibly short-sighted,” PierrePressure wrote. “Favor any console you like, but you have got to be kidding me if you seriously think that Steve Jobs has done more to make gaming what it is today then any of the early console/home PCs or today’s pioneers when it comes to technology or hardware,” added Eurogamer reader Der_tolle_Emil. “Heck, Pokemon alone probably did more to make gaming what it is today than all of the Apple devices combined.”
http://www.forbes.com/sites/benzingainsights/2011/11/02/steve-jobs-voted-most-influential-man-in-video-games-igniting-a-firestorm-of-complaints/

Oh please, half of Facepunch's users have far more influence on the video game industry than Jobs' has ever had.
Gabe Newell should win Most Influential Man in Video Games.
:wtc: this is nuts.
I didn't know that being dead helps you achieve something you have never even done, I must try this.
I'm guessing because they couldn't give it to them for the Computer industry, maybe smart phone? MP3 player even? But would that be a no-brainer?
omfg gavbe newlel is the most influentila man in video gamin what the FUCK
Gabe Newell should win Most Influential Man in Video Games.
Probably since it's single person instead of companies. But Miyamoto is big in Nintendo.
the majority of the 1,000 people surveyed (26%)
26% is not a majority. It's a winning number but it'd have to be >50% to be a majority.
where the fuck is gabe
This is like when Obama got given the Nobel Peace Prize(?) for doing absolutely shit all but making a lot of promises. Steve Jobs did fuck all for gaming, and not even that much for gaming platforms.
If he influenced Video Games, then I am the motherfucking king of the world.
What about John Carmack? You know, the guy that invented 3D games?
isnt his computer like, incompatible with most games?
Apple actually did have a video game console once way back when but it disappeared into dust as quickly as it appeared. IIRC it was pretty much the CDi only Apple-ized Still doesn't make Jobs qualify for such a title at all.
Shigeru Miyamoto?
26% is not a majority. It's a winning number but it'd have to be >50% to be a majority.
Don't quote me on this but I think in British English "majority" is actually defined as the biggest part, regardless of whether it's above half or not. This leads to a lot of confusion.
But... he created Angry Birds... he deserves it
So what exactly did he do other than the fact that he is Steve Jobs?
another thread for people to shit on steve jobs just for the sake of it
Because saying Steve Jobs was actually not a big influence on gaming industry equates "shitting"?
whos steve jobs
Yes, because whenever I design a game or game asset, the first thing I think is "What would Steve Jobs do?" Or "How will my idea be influenced or effected by the brilliant mind of Steve?"
whos steve jobs
On top of that what the hell are video games
Hey guys Halo created the FPS genre.
and? i love my mac
may I ask what you use it for?
For an actual list of people that shaped or are currently shaping video game history, you're better off with this list (ignoring the ranking).
