Hardware needs to be cheeper
I like this security feature. Its nice.
To be fair, Chrome is a pretty ambitious and impressive project. I can see it kicking off big time... until Apple announce the iSafari or some crap, that's basically the same but has a price hike and is nicer to look at.
It's too expensive for a web only device. For 350 I could get a pretty nice netbook which could do more things. Could install a light Linux distro
The way I see it, any device without stand alone capabilities is pretty damn useless. What if Wi-fi or 3G is down? You can't access your stuff, or even use the computer.

I'd love to see how they've done away with bios, a kernel, and os. Seeing as it IS an os, and will have a kernel. Based on the bios. And will probably need an antivirus for that matter And youtube? Judging by the picture theyre getting rid of that. And Email Im not against this, but their marketing pictures are bollocks.

Apple represents a choice to consumers, they make products for people to buy, Google now does the same thing, they make products for consumers to purchase; this is the same fucking thing every other company does. What is the point in getting pissy and ranting about a choice, no one is forcing you to go buy some shit you don't want. I love apple and I love google, I use both company's services and products. I also hate Microsoft, but I don't care what they do, I looked at windows phone 7 and thought "wow, this is sort of cool." but I would never buy one of their phones, so I shut up and don't bitch to the nearest person about how smart I am because I can throw some shit together and make it do the same damn thing for half the price.
Hardware needs to be cheeper
uhhhhhh have you ever purchased a laptop before?
Read thread title from main page as "Google unveils Chrome OS" and got excited. Read thread title from the forum page and received instant disappointment. Seriously google? You guys are making a probably great OS better than Lossdows any you guys are making it LAPTOP EXCLUSIVE?!?!?! [editline]11th May 2011[/editline]
I'd love to see how they've done away with bios, a kernel, and os. It seems rather over priced for a laptop only for internet and a few apps.
"But can it run Crysis?" Hot damn, 350 for pretty much a web-browsing laptop.
Hardware needs to be cheeper
A thousand times this, like somebody else said netbooks are cheaper, can do more as well under linux. You can get a netbook for 250, install ubuntu (hell, if you really wanted you could have no hard drive too, cheaper, just run backtrack every time on boot :v:, seriously somebody should do that, it would be the cheapest netbook ever)

It has built in features to let you install whatever you want, full access to the kernel. These ARE netbooks with chrome preinstalled, that is it. Read the engadget coverage for today, ctrl+F jailbreak. You'll find all the information about it. It's not locked down and news sites need to include this.
and is nicer to look at.
I can't be the only one who thinks apple products look tacky
so these are full fledged laptops instead of just netbooks? that's odd
Seems like 350 for internet access

Seems a little expensive for something that don't function properly without the internet [editline]12th May 2011[/editline] Isn't Chrome OS free too? Why not just buy a cheap netbook and install Chrome OS on it?
FYI, this is a laptop that can only run a browser/ is a browser. [editline]11th May 2011[/editline] Imagine your laptop could only run Chrome. That would be the 'Chromebook', ie fuckin useless.
Only thing we get out of this is another type of fanboy
I thought one of the purposes of this OS laptop would be a cheaper price since all it does is run web-based software. What's the point if it costs so much?
I have a Macbook Pro, an iPad 2, and I was/am one of the pilot program testers for the Cr-48. When I first received my Cr-48 I was ecstatic; I love all things tech and I'm always looking for the next best, more innovative thing. the first two weeks I loved my Chromebook, I would take it with me to panera bread and act like I was doing important things on my "unmarked laptop", waiting for someone to say "hey, what is that?" and I would proceed to tell him how amazing the concept is and how this is going to change the way we think of computers 10 years down the road. But I'm here today to express how utterly useless this is . I use my iPad 2 A LOT, I use it to do my job at work (Hand hygiene monitor), I use it at home, everywhere I go it follows. This chomebook is a different story, it weighs 3x more, takes up 2.5x more space compared to my iPad, and it only does ~ 1% (apps, battery life, etc.) of what my iPad does. Google, why do I want something this stupid and backwards? I think this could end up being a huge flop provided the cost of the Chrome books don't come below $200. They would have been far better off making android more versatile and powerful rather than making something like this. Of course I'll probably be wrong and this will be a major success and I'll buy a new one in june anyway...
Should be $275 USD at most.
Well, there are 20$ and 28$ per month options for Students and Enterprises, respectively. But even then, is a Chromebook worth it? Also, I am sure the hardware will get cheaper over time, these two laptops are simply the first steps in a long term investment by Google.
