US Navy to commission missile defense base in Romania
The Navy will commission its new missile defense base in southern Romania on Friday, one of two European land-based interceptor sites for a NATO missile shield vehemently opposed by Russia.
The base represents a rare expansion of the U.S. footprint in Europe, and the even rarer construction of a new Navy base from the ground up.
The base in Deveselu will be the first to feature the Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense system, a land-based version of the sophisticated radar tracking system installed on U.S. warships since 2004. Scheduled to become operational by the end of next year, the base — which is housed within a larger Romanian military installation — will be staffed by several hundred U.S. military, civilian and contract employees. A second site, in Poland, is scheduled to become operational by 2018
It's almost like the Cold War never ended.
Then again, as long as there's assholes like Putin in the Govt., there will always be Cold War esqe things.
this isn't going to give russia more ammunition, nope...
Let it be known that Romania actually wanted the base, our ambassadors kept asking for bases in here. Americans obliged to help, win/win.
Russia isn't going to be happy.

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't it a defensive installation, so the kremlin is just angry about not being able to rocket europe as easily

I guess threatening MAD isn't all that great in their opinion.
Fuck what Russia thinks of it.

See Russia you're doing it all wrong. You have to have a huge army and be super friendly because then they just give you their land. Soon all of Europe will be ours.
Welcome to the greatest country on earth my fellow Americans.

To be fair, everything military is described as "defensive" these days.
This has been a roadblock in U.S.-Russia relations since the Bush years. The issue is that it can intercept missiles OVER Russian territory.

Good.
Now all we need is a Romanian designed missile called 'Vlad the Impaler' and we are set!

The Aegis system really is defensive. It is even named after the ancient shield of Athena.

If it's intercepting over enemy territory it's offensive. The more military build up you see from NATO the more Russia will get aggressive.

I thought Romania was pro-Russia?

Geopolitical landscape can change. Russia sees this as encroachment. It's only bound to get more aggressive. Prove otherwise.

We're like the most Anti-Russian country in this region. "Latin island in a sea of slavs" and all that.
The point is that it's breaking the deterrence. This can only lead to another arms race which is bad for both sides.
I know that we've been all aggressive lately, but it's unlikely going to spread far than Ukraine. So while it's probably been provoked by our own actions, this is clearly an offensive move.

Not really. I mean, i understand that Eastern Europe is afraid of possible russian aggression, and i'm really sorry about this, but this move isn't aimed to prevent it. It's not like Putin is going to attack former soviet states with missiles or something, and a regular military base with conventional weapons would suit much better to keep Russia from pushing. The only thing this base is capable of is to weaken the whole MAD doctrine. Do you really think this is a good idea?
