Sitting nose to tail on a disused airstrip, these cars form a tiny part of the massive backlog of vehicles destined for the scrap heap.
The number standing idly on the runway has swelled to around 14,000 as mechanics struggle to cope with the popularity of the Government's scrappage scheme, which ended last week.
The former airfield in Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, is one of a number of 'holding areas' packed with vehicles sold through Lord Mandelson's £400million incentive scheme.
Under the policy, manufacturers matched the £1,000 per car put up by the Treasury - giving customers a £2,000 saving on a new vehicle.
The £28million haul will eventually be sent to a licensed scrappage yard where the cars' oil and petrol will be removed and parts recycled before the shells are crushed.
Almost all of the 400,000 vehicles sold through the scheme are still roadworthy and many could be driven for another five years, according to experts.
However, the vast collection --which includes a fine range of BMWs, Volvos and Peugeots - must be destroyed under the scheme's rules.
What a waste, some perfectly good cars in there. There's a fucking Porche in the bottom left corner :geno:
Give them to Top Gear, that'd be interesting.
Oh my god I wish I was over there with a Tank and a Monster Truck.
Even though it's a waste of materials, you've got to admit that pile really looks awesome.
And 90% of those have been replaced with Fiat 500s.
Somebody should go over there and build a giant robot out of cars.
Why are they not being recycled.
Parts are.
I just want to drive a monster truck over all of them.
Carpet bomb it to FUCK.
My old car is in there somewhere
They should sell them to the chinese and then give the money back to the tax payer.
What a waste.
To bad crushing them is the only option. If they had more money they should part them or resell them.
Fuuuuu...
This is my car;

And there those jerkoffs just dispose of their vehicles still in great shape.
:saddowns:
All the 17 year old newly passed drivers will be getting their crowbars ready.
Hurp a derp
The whole "cash for clunkers" thing was pretty dumb. It's goal was good, but it's method was terrible.
Someone didn't read the article.

I cringe at the thought of how much money those cars are worth.
Makes me wonder how tight their security is :v:

If this works, steal the Porsche in the bottom left first.

I am actually tempted to take a trip there and take one. Nobody would notice. (100% of those cars are roadworthy)
Where is Renault?
The car version of Where is Waldo!
I want one.
I want one.
^this
They're going to be scrapped anyway, might as well get one.
No point in wasting some perfectly good cars.
Oh my god I wish I was over there with a Tank and a Monster Truck.
I wish I was over there with a mech. That'd be fun. Pew pew.
Like 4 of 5 of those look much much better than our actual car :frown:
One of the main points of the scheme was to get the less economical cars off the road. But to anyone on a student budget (read:me) it looks criminal how much of a waste it is.
I don't care if it spits out cancer, I want one of those cars!
two words
