That's the point, he sent out his own obituary notice to them. At the end he says "How else should I have brought all of you together?".
The letter with the thin cross and the black border on the envelope is pretty unmistakable, too. I'm not sure how customary they are exactly, but they have a strong resemblance to obituaries printed in the newspapers here.
