At first, authorities thought Portillo suffered only minor injuries from the assault.
But after he was taken to a hospital, doctors discovered he had suffered serious internal head injuries, police said.
That's so utterly idiotic. Getting WARNED by an authority for misbehaving? Better assault them, that will definitely make the situation better.
That's one hell of a hook.
Police initially charged him (the teen) with aggravated assault. But with Portillo's death, authorities expect to upgrade the charges.
I'd certainly hope so.
I think the guy was in the wrong sport if he's got that much power behind one arm.

That guy was in the wrong playing sport in the first place

Well, I think (or atleast hope) that the 17-year-old isn't too proud of what he's done.
I don't think he wanted it to escalate to what had happened, and his reputation, as well as possibly his will to live, is probably going to go down the shitter because of bad luck and one bad decision.
The assaultor is, most likely, eligible for murder charges because of the paper skull concept.

I actually do not care if his life goes down the shitter because of "one bad decision". If you cannot keep yourself constrained and in your anger kill a person you should bear the consequences.
Portillo left a wife and daughter who's life might not end up in the gutter but it sure as hell will feel like just that to them.
"A warning? I'll definitely get out of this by smashing the ref in the face!
Must have been this guy

please dont start this
It's funny because Facepunch
Jeez, people, you're all acting as if he beat the man to death with his bare hands in some kind of homicidal rage. He didn't. He punched him one time in the face and the man slipped into a coma and died a week later. I've punched a few faces in my day, and most of you probably have too, and never once when doing so did I even think something such as this was possible. Don't be so quick to label the poor kid as some sort of malicious murderer due to some terrible accident. I'm sure the kid isn't sitting in jail maniacally twisting his pencil mustache and laughing that he killed the poor man, he's probably confused and terrified and I'd warrant sad about the entire situation. The kid obviously needs to make up for this and definitely deserves the punishment that will likely be given, but all of this one-sided compassion for the man who died and none for the kid who accidentally killed him is a bit extreme.

How about don't punch people in the first place because it's dumb and can kill, as this case readily proves.
That's true, without the "intent" to kill, he'll be charged the same as someone who did "intend" to kill.
Something doesn't seem right there but as long as the kid shows remorse, he'll be better off.
I thought you weren't supposed to use your hands in soccer.

he killed a man in cold blood
he killed a man in cold blood
No, he punched a man in anger and by some freak accident the man died in a weeks time.

freak accident?
he caused massive head trauma of course it could've killed him
freak accident?

But he didn't intend to cause his death.

I would call dying due to being punched in the face a freak accident considering how many people are punched in the face on a daily basis and just how few of them die.

The man died by bad luck, yes. But that does not in any way, shape or form change the fact that because some idiot could not control his temper Involuntary Manslaughter was commited.
This should be judged as manslaughter.
This happened in the Netherlands but then with more boys and kicking of a referee.
A shame... I hope the person gets a prison sentence and a long one.
he killed a man in cold blood
so all punches to the face are cold blooded attempts to murder someone..?

They mentioned that in the article.
And he won't. He'll get 6 months minimum and most likely it won't become any more than that.
