• WSJ RUMOR: PS4 to Provide PS3 "Compatibility" Solely Through Gaikai Streaming
The latest one tonight comes from the Wall Street Journal, with a report that connects Sony's $380 million purchase of cloud gaming service Gaikai last year with a method to provide backwards compatibility on the PlayStation 4. The WSJ reports Sony has been "investing heavily" in preparing Gaikai for an influx of PS4-equipped gamers, while also developing better cameras for its Move and the DualShock+touchpad controllers we've seen recently.
Normally, I wouldn't post a rumor thread, but WSJ's "rumors" turn out to be true more often than not. well, pc gaming looks like fun
This assumes that people don't keep their old PS3.
Why not just have Gaika stream PS4 too then?
I just hope we won't have to buy our PS3 games again, just to play them on PS4. Also, I don't get why you need a streaming service for backwards compatibility. If the console can process a last gen game, albeit being streamed, it should be able to do the same with optical media.

That's what the catch with OnLive was. The PS4 will likely have a different internal architecture setup than the PS3, which means that in case of it having backwards-compatibility, it would either need a PS3 cell-microprocessor included (this was how they did PS2 emulation on the early PS3), or they would have to do it with software emulation, which would require a really, really powerful computer.
Why not just have Gaika stream PS4 too then?
Video is compressed and so on, and many people wouldn't be able to stream 1080p - meaning that 720p would be "max". It would be a big restriction on graphics all in all, but it isn't as big a big problem with older games, as many titles on the PS3 are 720p anyway.
I want some sort of hack so I can use this with my pc instead

When ideas like this come up I feel like no one considers that some people still don't have an internet connection.
would be awesome if they make it work with your ps3 game disks somehow
would be awesome if they make it work with your ps3 game disks somehow
They could probably check the license or something, if you own that license on the PS3, you just get that streaming game for free.
I never liked that whole streaming idea for some reason.
This is actually a really clever idea. It will significantly reduce the cost of the PS4 because there will be no need to include any legacy hardware, and since Sony bought Gaikai it should be a stable platform right off the bat. Yes, some people's internet connections might not be up to the task, but at the end of the day it's not worth jacking up the price and complexity of the unit because of them.
a clever idea that will be misused to hell, as it is proper of sony in its idiotic fight against piracy lol.
I don't see how this could be misused or how it's relevant to piracy.
I don't see the problem here If you still have your PS3 games, you probably still have a PS3. If you can support the requirements for streaming, then you're saving money by not having to spend as much on the PS4, and won't have to fetch out a PS3 every time you want to play
I don't see how this could be misused or how it's relevant to piracy.
almost everything sony does with the playstation has fighting piracy in mind, and couldn't this be used to say, have DRM or something like that?
almost everything sony does with the playstation has fighting piracy in mind, and couldn't this be used to say, have DRM or something like that?
I guess you could call it a form of DRM, but it's obvious this system was decided on more to save money than to prevent piracy.
almost everything sony does with the playstation has fighting piracy in mind, and couldn't this be used to say, have DRM or something like that?
Yes because you can totally pirate a video stream of a video game.
well, pc gaming looks like fun
Doesn't the PS3 use a different architecture so it's impossible to run different games on it?
The Ps4 is using Amd x86 dual core processors. Sony has a choice of building what would be an insanely complicated emulator or just use a service from a company they own and stream 720p and maybe even 1080p. Also a Ps3 emulator would just create more attack vectors for hackers. Everything that makes a Ps3 a Ps3 is public knowledge and it this this same situation that leads to all of the exploits on the ps vita's psp emulator. I would guess the second option will be a lot cheaper to start off with then investing in backwards compatibility opening up another console to its prior's problems.
There's alot of confusion i'm seeing about the CPU The CPU in the PS4 will supposedly be an 8 core piledriver chip. Piledriver CPUs are made up of 2 core modules. They aren't separate chips, hell, they aren't even separate dies. Just clearing that up for you guys.

If you buy a PS3 right when they are discontinued you're going to be lucky to get 2 years out of it before it dies.

Well ok then I guess I'm not going to play ps3 games on my ps4
I think you're getting the PS3 confused with the early 360 units.
Nope. My launch model PS3 died after 4 years.
Nope. My launch model PS3 died after 4 years.
Mine's still going.
Mine's still going.
As is mine, so that's about 6 and a half years old now.
Nope. My launch model PS3 died after 4 years.
Is 4 years a bad lifespan now? :v:
