• How do I read chords

I'm really new to this. I just wanna cover some songs, how do I read chords? Please don't bite my head off for such a dumb question. I'm using an acoustic guitar
you can either study the theory of it and learn how to create the chords or you can learn the basic shapes and just use muscle memory which is better if you don't plan to play anything harmonically complex
And just strum along.
Learn the piano first
Learn the piano first
The piano is the easiest instrument to get your head around the notes, scales, etc. So yes, learn the piano, then learn how chords are formed, etc. and there you have it.
unfortunately as boring as theory is, it's needed in order to play. I wish I kept with playing the trombone instead of giving in to my lack of effort and not studying theory and making it hard to keep up in band.
you are a fool i play bass guitar and drums and i dont know shit about theory.
You're the fool, with your seeming complete rejection of a very useful aspect of music.
The question is phrased quite bad. On guitar there are different chord shapes, some being far more common than others. Most songs use these common chord shapes, so once you learn them you just play them in the right rhythm and sequence. Take the song Wish You Were Here. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/p/pink_floyd/wish_you_were_here_crd.htm In that link it gives the chord sequence and you can hover over each chord and see how to place your fingers. Sometimes how to play the chord may not be given, and in that case you just look it up. After you get the different chords down, you listen to the song and figure out the rhythm, and then just play it. It has a decent learning curve, but within a few weeks you'll be able to do it quite easy. Seeing how you are knew to this, there is no reason to learn about chord formation. You do not need to know anything about that to learn how to play chords and to do covers. Disregard all advice telling you that you need to learn music theory because it isn't at all needed to achieve your goal (of learning songs). Check out justinguitar as he has a lot of tutorials. http://www.justinguitar.com/
Learn the piano first
The piano is not a prerequisite to any other instrument. If somebody wants to play the acoustic guitar it does not make sense to learn piano first. Learning to play to piano will in no way help the OP learn how to cover songs on his guitar.
GL trying to progress as a musician then!
Knowing music theory won't necessarily help you progress any further or result in better songs. Music theory is more a tool. You can achieve the same results without music theory. I'm a big fan and user of music theory and I encourage people to learn it, but not because it'll allow them to make better music, but more because it provides more understanding as to: what you are doing; why certain things sound really good; why certain things sound terrible. If you are composing something, not using any available tools such as music theory is a bad choice, but you can still achieve the same results especially considering that many people have great ears for what is good. Music theory really isn't much use for a guitarist who doesn't have an interest in composition.
