Google has won a landmark ruling as a judge threw out a $1bn lawsuit brought by Viacom accusing the internet giant of allowing copyrighted material on its YouTube service without permission.
Viacom had accused Google of "massive intentional copyright infringement".
But the Manhattan judge said Google and YouTube could not be held liable merely for having a "general awareness" that videos might be posted illegally.
Media conglomerate Viacom said it planned to appeal against the decision.
Google called the ruling "an important victory".
owned~
Good. Now I hope that BPI fucks off the same way.
Can't Google just remove Viacom from youtube?
They take down things they don't even own.
Victory!
Suck it Viacom.
Fucking viacom
Horrible case really, they have a knowledge that users might place copyrighted content on their servers even though they remove them if requested and even have a user agreement so they don't so it. I'm not surprised it was thrown out.
Hahaha what a bunch of losers.
The whole copyrighting shit on youtube is getting annoying, though.
Who the fuck are Viacom? I've seen them take down a lot of shit from YouTube that in no way could be related. If anything Google should sue them for claiming copyright on copyrighted material that's not theirs.

Food for thought

Viacom is just jealous of youtube success. Why can't they just put up their own shows on the internet if they hate Youtube so much
Youtube is such a massive website with a huge volume of videos being uploaded and viewed. They've tried to stop copyrighted stuff using automatic methods, which can easily be bypassed by speeding up or slowing down the track slightly.
Viacom's pretty stupid for thinking it's practical for Google to screen every video for copyrighted material before authorising it, or whatever they're implying. In any case it's not even Google's fault for the copyright material, it's the uploaders who are at wrong.
Viacom needs to just fuck off already, there is not one person on the planet who appreciates what they're doing to the already fucked up Youtube.
They own XFire?
Shit!
Good, but I fear that this is not the end.
They own Gametrailers ? Well that makes sense.
Google ALWAYS wins.
Viacom owns Bubba Gump Shrimp?
where did the love go
what a whiny bitch viacom is.

[editline]12:58AM[/editline]
Basically they bought it for $102 MILLION dollars
Yes! Can they still take YouTube vids down?
Viacom is just jealous of youtube success. Why can't they just put up their own shows on the internet if they hate Youtube so much
They do, they just put a metric fuckton of advertising around and before their videos. It's one of the main reasons they started issuing the letters.
There is a viacom video upload site, they fucking upload all the awesome youtube videos to it.
Now all we need is Warner Bros. to fuck off Youtube as well..
I never knew Viacom owned Bubba Gump Shrimp Company

They own most of the good TV channels.
