Last week, Mod Mark posted a thread on our forums highlighting some of the nostalgic and often passionate discussions within the community around a desired return of an ‘old school’ version of RuneScape. Specifically, the fine vintages of 2006 & 2007 appeared to be the high point of collective interest. Our team then set out to see if we had a backup that went that far back; if restoring the backup was even technically possible; and what specific content these potential old RuneScape backups might contain.

Finally, I’m very happy to report that we have indeed managed to recover a full RuneScape backup from August 2007. This is a complete snapshot of the game, which we have been able to verify would work, with some time and effort invested in it..

There will be a substantial amount of work involved to get these ‘old school’ servers back up and running again. However, if enough people support this project, this will be neither unachievable, nor a hindrance to the main game

So, just like the poll for the return of the Wildy & Free Trade, which saw a jaw dropping 1.4 million votes , we will be running a similar poll and letting you - our valued members - decide the fate of ‘Old School RuneScape', given that you directly fund the game's ongoing development and supporting services. This decision - along with the level of service, investment and potentially any additional fee for the service - is truly up to you to determine.
However, before we invest any further resource into this project, we need to accurately gauge your level of support by understanding how many of you are really behind ‘Old School RuneScape’ as it was in August 2007. As such, we will set up a poll this week for players to show their interest in the 2007 service.

By giving you the choice to play either version of the game, we are demonstrating our commitment to listen and - wherever possible - incorporate your feedback. In the long term, we hope that this project will bring back many veteran players, as well as possibly encourage new players to join. They will be able to relive their old game experience to their heart's content, and - if they so choose - perhaps even join the main game

These servers, at any of the above levels, would be the exact version from back in 2007 and would maintain the ‘old school’ vibe and rules. The old graphics, hiscores, log-in, are all part of the same archived build and would be retained. We wouldn’t ever add any micropayment updates. This will be a members-only vote. While all types of players have invested time in the game, it is our members that ultimately fund the initiatives and therefore get to set the priorities. Your support allows us to continue to evolve this amazing game that we all care deeply about. Making the vote members-only has the benefit of ensuring the votes cannot be rigged, and is a reliable, secure way to calibrate interest from dedicated players.

That being said, we have set out the following targets to help us figure out how much focus and resource we should put into this project:
Level 1 - 50,000 or more votes:
2007 servers will come back as a separate entity to the current Runescape game, with an additional membership fee of around $15. These servers will receive no content updates and only critical maintenance.
Level 2 - 250,000 or more votes:
2007 servers will come back as a separate entity to the main Runescape game, supported by a small development team, with a smaller additional membership fee of around $5 extra. These servers will receive basic maintenance for bug fixes and little improvements, with the possibility of integrating our modern anti-bot technology over time, if it becomes necessary.
Level 3 - 500,000 or more votes:
2007 servers will come back as a separate entity to the main RuneScape game, with a dedicated development team, with no extra membership fee. These servers will receive regular maintenance, some content updates and integration of anti-bot technology if necessary.
Level 4 - 750,000 or more votes:
2007 Servers will come back as a separate entity to the main RuneScape game, with a larger dedicated development team with no extra membership fee and the free portion of the game available to all. These servers will receive continuous maintenance, modern anti-bot technology if necessary and - crucially - regular members' polls to determine which updates you want to see prioritised.

The poll will be live on the website this Friday 15th February for two weeks
http://services.runescape.com/m=news/c=lTmDMpTXpUA/2007---old-school-runescape-you-vote
tl;dr Members in Runescape will be able to vote whether or not Jagex should bring back the version of Runescape in 2007. At least 50k people need to vote yes, for it to at least have a server up, but at least 500k people need to vote for there to be actual support and updates and stuff for it. Poll opens this Friday.
EDIT:
From the FAQs
If I'm not currently a member, why should I pay just to vote?
Should the poll be successful, anyone who votes will get their first month of old school RuneScape for free, regardless of the level of polling. This means a paying now to vote is also paying for your first month's subscription to the 2007 service.
This means that if you vote in the poll, you will get a free month of membership for the 2007 Runescape even if your membership has expired. So you should pay for a month of members now just to vote if you plan on playing the 2007 Runescape, or planning to play as a member if it hits 750k votes.
I used to play this unironically.
Those were dark days.

hey fuck you runescape was awesome back in the day
unfortunate that only members are able to vote for this, considering the VAST majority of people who would vote in this poll don't play anymore
lets hope it gets at least 500k votes
are there even 500k members, lol?
hey fuck you runescape was awesome back in the day
Rose-colored glasses, imo.
I think it's always been really grindy and dull. My 12-14 year old brain was just too dumb to realize it at the time.
I remember playing the first version of Runescape back in 2002-3 or something.
But wouldn't this divide the community? I would think it would be a wiser decision to improve the game by shaping it after what people liked about this 2007-8 version. Going back to the past is just a step back honestly unless the newer Runescape is a complete disaster or something.

I'm not sure if the PKing poll was members only, but it got 1.4 million votes.
I'd imagine this would get much more support than bringing back PKing also.

To be honest I don't think there's any way they're going to bring back old players if they don't remove the combat system, which they're probably never going to do ever.

I disagree. Runescape was pretty flexible compared to other MMORPGs back then. It wasn't class based and had a lot more things to do besides combat.
eh idk, i played that runerewind shit when it was beta for a short while (it's probably raped by jagex's lawyers now) and even though it was very nostalgic i don't think it has aged well; either that or it always had sucked. it had it's own special charm, yeah, and it was addictive, but the game was kind of ultimately shitty and unexciting gameplay-wise
The grinding was great because I had fuck-all else to do back then.

I think the new combat system is better imo.
but objectively, neither is really better. Just a different way to accomplish the same thing.
and they added momentum to have 200% extra auto-attack damage, for those long fucking slayer sessions, which is a huge fucking blessing.
I still play the game mostly cause it's just something i can do while doing homework, training some skill or whatever while I do something else.
I played runescape to complete quests with my friends and throw multimillion gp house parties
mining ess and selling at nearest bank erry day
Feel like the game is in the shitter in its current state. Only hop on and off every other month to sell/buy my santa hat.
I fucking love 2007 runescape, all the good scams you could pull on people
my brother had yellow gloves and put it in note form, he then found some fuckwit who thought it was golden gloves and gave us 3mil for it
we still laugh at it to this day
Hopefully the guys which made these:

TBH I thought 06scape was garbage also, but mainly because the members areas weren't available.
Also, it was a scam.

I didn't really say that it was bad, but rather that they would need to remove it if they want older players to even consider playing new RS.

The thing about Runescape '07 is that the only redeeming value it has now is the nostalgia factor. Those who have played recently know, and others may have heard, that Runescape now has a totally revamped combat system, universally improved graphics, and ridiculous amounts of new content; current players will revisit it and get bored because they don't have the content they're used to, and former players will go back and get bored because they remember it's really just a huge grind.
That said, I'll still be voting for it because I'm interested to see how it turns out, plus there's really no reason not to, of course.
[editline]a[/editline]
The thing that really puts me off it is that there's no Grand Exchange. Because really, who actually wants to spend hours in a bank trying to buy something? "Modern" Runescape is significantly more convenient for players in every way; there's a lot less bs to wade through to get simple tasks done.

grand exchange literally killed the fun of going to the bank, while it was a great improvement to put all the trades and sellers into one spot, it got cluttered and i found banks were easier cause there was underground/upperground areas to sell/buy
free armor trimming

I remember Facepunch hated the shit out of Runescape back in 06-07
Wait, there are people who want to play an outdated by 6 years, version of a game?
Whats the logic behind that?

Doom doesn't get updates, which is my point.
Why play a version of a game with less content?

more content doesn't mean the game is better

you wouldn't understand unless you actually played back in 2007
